To put text on a face of a part in Roblox Studio, add a SurfaceGui to the part, place a TextLabel inside it, and edit the label’s text and appearance. If the text appears on the wrong side—or not at all—check the SurfaceGui’s Face property.

Put text on a part with a SurfaceGui

  1. In Explorer, hover over the part and click the + button.
  2. Insert a SurfaceGui under the part.
  3. Select the SurfaceGui, click its + button, and insert a TextLabel.
  4. Select the TextLabel and edit its text and appearance in Properties. Adjust the label’s size and alignment so the text fits the area.
  5. If the text is not on the side you expect, select the SurfaceGui and change its Face property.

A TextLabel is a non-interactive rectangle for styled text. You can set its font, size, color, alignment, wrapping, and scaling. To show text without a rectangular panel behind it, set BackgroundTransparency to 1. See Roblox Creator Hub’s Text & image labels guide.

Choose SurfaceGui or BillboardGui

Container How it appears Best for
SurfaceGui Displays UI on a particular face of a part. Signs, posters, or screens that should remain attached to and oriented with a surface.
BillboardGui Displays content in 3D space facing the camera. Floating names, health displays, or markers.

Both containers can be attached to parts or attachments. With a BillboardGui, AlwaysOnTop determines whether it draws over 3D objects or is occluded by them. For a size-scaled billboard, Roblox recommends considering TextScaled on the child TextLabel so the text scales with the billboard canvas as camera distance changes. See the Roblox in-experience containers documentation.

Make the text fit and stay readable

Start by giving the label enough space for its text, then set alignment and styling. TextScaled resizes text to fill the label, ignores TextSize, and automatically enables wrapping. If you use scaled text in on-screen UI, Roblox notes that a UITextSizeConstraint can help limit how large or small the text becomes. For a SurfaceGui, SizingMode, CanvasSize, and PixelsPerStud control sizing. The MaxDistance property controls render distance; its documented default is 1000. See Roblox’s SurfaceGui reference and label documentation.

If the text is missing or on the wrong side

  • Wrong face: Select the SurfaceGui and set Face to the part side where the text should appear.
  • Text does not fit: Increase the label’s size or adjust its alignment and text settings. If using TextScaled, remember that it overrides TextSize and enables wrapping.
  • Text is too faint against the part: Change the text color or set BackgroundTransparency to 1 if you want the background hidden.
  • Text is not visible at a distance: Check the SurfaceGui sizing and MaxDistance settings.

When the label should respond to clicks

A basic TextLabel only displays text; it does not provide interactive input. Roblox’s interactive UI setup typically places the GUI in PlayerGui and points it at a part through Adornee. The part’s CanQuery property must be true for interactive elements to receive input. That setup is separate from the simple part-attached sign described above. See the SurfaceGui reference.
