How to Add Upsells to Your WooCommerce Store: Native, Cart, Checkout, and Automated Methods

Add WooCommerce upsells the right way: configure native product-page upgrades, distinguish cross-sells, and choose cart, checkout, AI, or order-data recommendations for automated targeting.

The simplest way to add an upsell in WooCommerce is to edit a product, open Product Data → Linked Products, add alternative products in Upsells, and click Update. WooCommerce then displays those recommendations on the product page, with the exact position controlled by your theme. For cart- or checkout-specific offers, conditional rules, or automated recommendations, use the appropriate WooCommerce extension instead of manually linking every product.

What an upsell is in WooCommerce

An upsell is an alternative that can deliver a better result for the shopper, commonly through higher quality, more capability, or a higher price. In native WooCommerce, upsells are attached to an individual product and normally appear on that product’s page.

Do not confuse an upsell with the two other recommendation types built into WooCommerce:

Recommendation type What it offers Typical location How products are selected
Upsell An alternative or upgrade to the product being viewed Product page You select products in the product’s Upsells field
Cross-sell A complementary accessory, add-on, or companion item Cart You select products in the product’s Cross-sells field
Related products Items related by catalog organization Product page or theme-defined area WooCommerce generates them from shared categories or tags

For example, a more capable version of a product is an upsell, while a compatible cable or carrying case is a cross-sell. Keeping those intents separate makes the recommendation easier to understand and prevents a product page from presenting unrelated add-ons as if they were upgrades.

How to add a native upsell, step by step

Native linked products are the best starting point for a small catalog or for merchants who want deliberate, product-by-product control. No recommendation extension is required.

  1. Open the product editor. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce → Products and select the product that should receive the offer.
  2. Open Product Data. In the product editor, locate the Product Data panel. The panel contains the product’s pricing, inventory, shipping, and linked-product settings.
  3. Choose Linked Products. Open the Linked Products section.
  4. Add alternatives in Upsells. In the Upsells field, search for products and select the alternatives you want to show. Choose products that improve the shopper’s likely outcome or provide a meaningful upgrade rather than simply selecting the most expensive items.
  5. Save the relationship. Click Update to save the product.
  6. Check the storefront. View the product page as a shopper. The theme controls where the linked-product output appears, usually below the product description. WooCommerce notes that linked-product output is sorted randomly, so the order in which you enter products should not be treated as a guaranteed display order.

If the offer is an accessory intended to be bought with the current item, return to Linked Products and use Cross-sells instead. Cross-sells are designed for the cart, while upsells are alternatives shown from the product page.

How to choose products for a useful upsell

Offer a clear step up

The shopper should understand why the recommended item is a better choice. More capacity, stronger materials, additional features, or a more complete configuration are all intelligible upgrade reasons. A product that is merely more expensive but does not solve a recognizable problem is unlikely to feel like an upsell.

Keep the alternative relevant

Link products that can reasonably replace the item being viewed. If the shopper is looking at an entry-level model, a compatible premium model can be an upsell; a completely different category belongs in a cross-sell or a broader related-products module.

Use a short, deliberate set

Manual links work best when each recommendation is intentional. A small selection makes the choice easier to scan and keeps the product page focused. Review the links whenever pricing, stock, product specifications, or catalog structure changes.

Explain the difference in the product content

The linked-product setting controls which items are eligible to appear, not the explanation a shopper needs. Use product titles, images, and on-page copy to make the upgrade’s benefit obvious. Avoid implying that the upsell is required to use the original product.

What native linked products can and cannot automate

Native upsells provide direct curation: each source product has its own list of alternatives. That is useful when your catalog is small, merchandising decisions are highly specific, or you want complete control over which upgrade appears for a particular product.

The trade-off is maintenance. Adding a new product, discontinuing an old model, changing stock, or revising a product’s positioning may require you to revisit several linked-product fields. Native WooCommerce also does not provide the conditional cart and checkout logic offered by dedicated extensions. Its linked-product output is randomly sorted, so native settings are not a tool for enforcing a precise ranking order.

How to show conditional offers in the cart or checkout

When an offer should depend on what is already in the shopper’s basket, use the WooCommerce Cart and Checkout Upsell extension rather than relying only on product-page links. It is designed for offers that appear in the cart or checkout and can be configured around the current order context.

Available targeting conditions

The extension supports conditions based on:

  • a specific product;
  • a product category;
  • quantity;
  • subtotal or total;
  • the number of items in the cart; and
  • a coupon code.

These conditions let you create rules such as an offer that appears only after a shopper reaches a quantity threshold, only when a particular category is present, or only when a qualifying coupon has been entered.

Control the presentation

You can configure the placement, priority, custom text, and button behavior for an offer. Placement determines where the recommendation is rendered in the cart or checkout experience. Priority helps decide which rule takes precedence when several rules could apply. Custom copy and button behavior let you explain the offer and define the shopper’s next action without editing the underlying product description.

When this method is the right fit

Choose conditional cart and checkout upsells when the recommendation depends on basket value, item count, product combinations, or promotional codes. It is more suitable than native links for threshold-based promotions and post-selection upgrades, but it requires the corresponding extension and ongoing rule management.

How AI Product Recommendations works

The AI Product Recommendations extension is intended for stores that want recommendations generated by AI or by custom rules rather than only by manually curated links. It supports placements on product, cart, and checkout pages.

Use AI or define your own rules

AI-generated suggestions can reduce the amount of product-by-product setup, while custom rules preserve explicit merchandising control. Decide which approach is appropriate for each placement: a tightly controlled upgrade may deserve a rule, while a broad discovery module may benefit from automated selection.

Apply filters and ranking factors

The extension supports filters and ranking logic. Depending on the configuration, ranking inputs can include popularity, sales, rating, price, stock, or newness. Filters are useful for excluding unsuitable products, limiting recommendations to a catalog segment, or keeping unavailable items out of the selection.

Use it where the shopper is ready to decide

Product-page recommendations can propose an alternative before the item is added. Cart and checkout placements can address the shopper after a product choice has already been made. Because the extension supports all three surfaces, you can assign different recommendation goals to each rather than displaying the same list everywhere.

How Product Recommendations uses order history

The Product Recommendations extension can use order data to produce frequently-bought-together and related-product suggestions. Its documented surfaces include product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received pages.

Frequently bought together

Order history can reveal products that customers commonly purchase in the same order. This is useful for companion-item suggestions, especially when manual cross-sell maintenance would be difficult across a large catalog.

Related-product recommendations

Order data can also support related suggestions that are not limited to a single manually configured product relationship. These recommendations can be placed across several stages of the shopping journey, including the category page and the order-received page.

Choose this approach when historical data matters

Product Recommendations is the most relevant option when your store has enough order history to inform frequently-bought-together or related-product suggestions and you want coverage beyond the product page. It is an extension-based implementation, so plan for configuration and review rather than assuming that automation eliminates merchandising oversight.

WooCommerce upsell methods compared

Method Selection Documented placements Targeting or ranking Implementation profile
Native linked products Manual, per product Product page Products selected in Upsells; linked output is randomly sorted No recommendation extension; deliberate curation for smaller catalogs
Cart and Checkout Upsell Rule-based Cart and checkout Product, category, quantity, subtotal, total, item count, coupon code; priorities, copy, and button behavior Requires the corresponding extension; suited to conditional offers
AI Product Recommendations AI-generated or custom rules Product, cart, and checkout Filters and ranking factors such as popularity, sales, rating, price, stock, or newness Requires the corresponding extension; reduces manual selection when configured carefully
Product Recommendations Order-data-driven Product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received pages Frequently-bought-together and related-product suggestions from order data Requires the corresponding extension; useful when historical purchases can inform recommendations

Choosing the right placement

Product page

Use a product-page upsell when the shopper is still comparing alternatives. Native linked products and AI Product Recommendations both support this placement. Keep the recommendation framed as an alternative or upgrade so it does not compete with the primary add-to-cart decision.

Cart

The cart is the natural location for complementary items and for rules based on the basket. Native cross-sells are intended for this surface, while Cart and Checkout Upsell, AI Product Recommendations, and Product Recommendations can provide more configurable or automated offers.

Checkout

Checkout recommendations should be narrowly relevant because the shopper is completing an order. Conditional rules, filters, and clear button behavior are particularly important here. Avoid presenting an offer that requires a complicated detour or makes the final total unclear.

Category page

Category-page recommendations are available through Product Recommendations. This placement can help shoppers discover related products before they open an individual product page.

Order-received page

The order-received page is supported by Product Recommendations. It is a post-purchase opportunity for related suggestions, where the original order can provide useful context without interrupting checkout.

How to combine manual and automated recommendations

A mixed setup is often easier to manage than forcing one method across the whole store:

  • Use native upsells for important products where a human merchandiser knows the exact upgrade path.
  • Use native cross-sells for a small set of obvious accessories that belong in the cart.
  • Use Cart and Checkout Upsell for threshold, coupon, quantity, and basket-composition rules.
  • Use AI Product Recommendations when filters and ranking inputs can cover a broad catalog but you still need product, cart, or checkout placement.
  • Use Product Recommendations when order history can support frequently-bought-together or related suggestions across product, category, cart, checkout, and order-received pages.

Keep one clear purpose per module. A product page should not simultaneously present several indistinguishable “upgrade” lists, and a checkout rule should not surface an item that duplicates a recommendation already accepted in the cart.

Measuring whether upsells help your store

The official documentation reviewed for these WooCommerce features does not publish a universal conversion-rate or average-order-value increase. Do not promise a fixed revenue lift based solely on installing an upsell feature. Measure the result in your own analytics.

  • Upsell or add-on attach rate: the share of eligible orders that include the recommended item.
  • Average order value: compare the value of orders exposed to a recommendation with a comparable group that was not exposed.
  • Margin: track contribution after product costs, discounts, and any promotional incentives; a higher order value is not automatically a higher profit.
  • Checkout completion: watch whether a new cart or checkout module coincides with abandoned checkouts.

Evaluate these metrics by placement and rule. A product-page upgrade, a cart accessory, and a checkout threshold offer have different jobs, so combining them into one undifferentiated result can hide which configuration is helping or hurting.

Troubleshooting common upsell problems

The native upsell does not appear

  • Confirm that the products were added under Product Data → Linked Products → Upsells, not under Cross-sells.
  • Click Update after making the selection.
  • Check the product page in the active theme. WooCommerce leaves the placement of linked-product output to the theme, and the section may appear below the product description or in another theme-defined location.
  • Remember that linked products are sorted randomly; a missing expected position is not evidence that the link was saved incorrectly.

The wrong type of recommendation is showing

Review the intent of each relationship. Move upgrades into Upsells, complementary accessories into Cross-sells, and rely on related-product generation only when shared categories or tags accurately describe the relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A conditional cart or checkout offer is too broad

Review its product, category, quantity, subtotal, total, item-count, and coupon conditions. Add a priority when multiple rules can apply, narrow the eligible products with filters where available, and revise the custom text so the qualifying condition is clear.

Automated recommendations are irrelevant

Inspect the filters and ranking inputs. Exclude products that are out of stock or unsuitable for the placement, then decide whether popularity, sales, rating, price, stock, or newness should influence ranking. For order-data-driven recommendations, allow the underlying purchase relationships to reflect current catalog reality rather than leaving discontinued products eligible.

A practical implementation checklist

  • Define whether the offer is an alternative upgrade or a complementary add-on.
  • For a manually curated product-page offer, add products through Product Data → Linked Products → Upsells and save with Update.
  • Use Cross-sells for accessories intended to appear in the cart.
  • Choose Cart and Checkout Upsell when the offer depends on basket contents, quantities, totals, item counts, or coupon codes.
  • Choose AI Product Recommendations when AI or custom rules, filters, and ranking controls are needed on product, cart, or checkout pages.
  • Choose Product Recommendations when order history should power frequently-bought-together or related suggestions across several store surfaces.
  • Verify the display in the active theme and account for native linked-product random sorting.
  • Measure attach rate, average order value, margin, and checkout completion instead of assuming a guaranteed lift.
  • Review links, rules, filters, stock eligibility, and order-data recommendations whenever the catalog changes.

Bottom line

Start with native linked products if you need a small number of deliberate product-page upgrades. Add a cart and checkout extension when offers must respond to basket conditions, use AI Product Recommendations for filtered or ranked suggestions across key buying pages, and use Product Recommendations when order history can generate frequently-bought-together or related products. The best setup is the one whose selection logic matches the shopper’s decision at that exact stage of the store.
