To build Go from source on a Linux VPS, install Git and a compatible bootstrap Go compiler, clone the official source into a clean directory, check out a release tag, run cd src followed by ./make.bash, put the generated bin directory first on your PATH, and verify it with a small program. A C compiler such as GCC or Clang is optional unless the resulting toolchain must support cgo. Pinning the checkout makes the installation repeatable; for ordinary installations, a precompiled archive remains simpler.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Decide whether a source build is appropriate
The official Go guidance says most users should install a precompiled package instead of compiling the toolchain. A source build is justified when you need a specific release or commit, are developing Go itself, need a modified toolchain, or target an operating-system and architecture combination for which no binary distribution is available.

| Situation | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Standard production application on a supported VPS | Precompiled Go archive | It is the quicker, simpler installation path. |
| Reproducible toolchain pinned to a tag or commit | Source build | You control the exact source revision and build inputs. |
| Go compiler or runtime development | Source build | The checkout can follow the development branch and be rebuilt as changes arrive. |
| No suitable binary for the required OS/architecture | Source build | The repository’s source-install procedure is the fallback when a binary distribution does not exist. |
A source build installs into the checkout directory, not automatically into /usr/local/go. That makes it easy to keep several versions side by side, but it also means your shell profile must point to the intended bin directory.

A bootstrap Go compiler
The Go toolchain is written in Go, so building it requires an existing Go compiler. The build scripts search for go in PATH. If the compiler is installed elsewhere, set GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP; the scripts then use $GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP/bin/go.
The bootstrap compiler must meet the minimum version for the release you are building:
Recommended Free Tools
| Target Go release | Minimum bootstrap compiler |
|---|---|
| Go 1.5 through 1.19 | Go 1.4 |
| Go 1.20 through 1.21 | Go 1.17 |
| Go 1.22 through 1.23 | Go 1.20 |
| Go 1.24 and 1.25 | Go 1.22 |
| Future Go 1.N releases | Go 1.M, where M is N minus 2 rounded down to an even number, subject to the current release guide |
Check the compiler that the build will actually use before starting:
command -v go
go version
If that is not the required bootstrap installation, either put the correct bin directory earlier in PATH or point directly to its installation root:
export GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP=/path/to/bootstrap/go
GOROOT describes the tree being built and normally does not need to be set for this procedure. Do not confuse it with GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP, which identifies the already-working compiler used to create the new toolchain.
Optional C compiler for cgo
Install a C compiler such as gcc or clang when programs built with the resulting toolchain must use cgo. A C compiler is not required for a no-cgo toolchain. To disable cgo explicitly, set CGO_ENABLED=0 for the build.

Understand the bootstrap requirement before choosing a tag
The bootstrap compiler is not simply any Go executable that happens to be available. It must satisfy the minimum documented version for the exact release line checked out. For example, a Go 1.22 or 1.23 source tree needs at least Go 1.20 to start its build, while Go 1.24 or 1.25 needs Go 1.22. The rule for future Go 1.N releases uses Go 1.M, with M equal to N minus 2 rounded down to an even number, but the release’s current guide remains the authority.
Check the bootstrap version after selecting the source tag, not only before cloning. If you move from one release line to another, the old bootstrap compiler may no longer meet the new minimum. A failed bootstrap check is normally corrected by exposing another installation through PATH or by setting GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP to the root that contains the required compiler. The variable points to the installation root; the scripts append /bin/go themselves.
Keeping the bootstrap compiler separate from the tree being built also avoids an accidental self-reference. The new checkout supplies the final go command only after the build succeeds; until then, the existing compiler is the one that must be discoverable.
Choose a clean source directory
Use a directory whose final goroot path does not already exist. The source tree itself becomes the Go installation root, and its bin directory receives the commands. A name such as goroot avoids the ambiguity created by using $HOME/go, which is also the conventional default for GOPATH.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the exact tag or commit in your deployment notes. Recording the source revision, bootstrap version, target variables, and whether cgo was enabled gives you a reproducible explanation of what is running on the VPS.
Do not mix an interrupted clone with a new installation without checking it. The build scripts expect a coherent source checkout. If the destination already exists, either inspect and complete that checkout deliberately or choose another empty directory. A separate directory for each retained release also makes side-by-side testing and rollback a path change rather than a destructive overwrite.

Fetch and pin the Go source
Clone the official repository into the clean directory, then check out a release tag or release branch:
git clone https://go.googlesource.com/go goroot
cd goroot
git checkout <release-tag>
Replace <release-tag> with the tag you have selected. A tag is preferable for a repeatable production build because it does not move. A release branch is useful when you intentionally track maintenance changes. If you are working on Go itself, switch to master instead; that follows development rather than a stable release.
Confirm the revision before compiling:
git status
git log -1 --oneline
The checkout should be clean unless you deliberately maintain a patch. If the destination directory already exists, choose another empty path or remove the incomplete tree after preserving anything you need.
Pinning matters even when the VPS is rebuilt only occasionally. A branch can receive later maintenance commits, whereas a release tag identifies the intended source state. Record the tag or commit together with the date of the build so another operator can select the same input later. For development work, a moving master checkout is appropriate, but it should be treated as a development toolchain rather than an unchanged production artifact.
Build the toolchain
Standard build
From the repository root, enter src and run the build script:
cd src
./make.bash
make.bash builds and installs the toolchain into the parent checkout. A successful run reports the target platform, installation root, command directory, and a reminder about the new bin directory. Treat that output as authoritative for the path; a custom checkout is not automatically installed under /usr/local/go.
Build plus the standard tests
Use the longer script when you also want the important standard test run:
cd src
./all.bash
all.bash includes the build and takes longer than make.bash. On a production VPS, schedule it during a maintenance window and capture its output so a failed test can be investigated without losing the previous toolchain.
Use make.bash when the immediate goal is to produce the compiler, and use all.bash when the additional standard tests are part of your acceptance check. A successful compilation alone does not replace whatever test level your deployment requires. Keep the command output in the build record, especially when the VPS is used to produce artifacts for another machine.
Build without cgo
If the target toolchain must not depend on a C compiler or C libraries, set the variable on the build command:
cd src
CGO_ENABLED=0 ./make.bash
The same setting can be applied to ./all.bash. This produces a no-cgo toolchain; it does not make software that requires cgo suddenly portable, so check your applications’ own requirements before choosing it.
Conversely, installing GCC or Clang does not force every Go program to use cgo. It simply supplies the C compiler needed when cgo-enabled builds require it. Decide whether the resulting toolchain must support cgo before starting, then record the setting so a later rebuild has the same behavior.

Put the generated commands on PATH
When the build finishes, the executable commands are in the checkout’s bin directory. If you are still in goroot/src, the immediate-session command is:
export PATH="$PWD/../bin:$PATH"
For a persistent login configuration, add the equivalent path using the absolute location of your checkout to the profile used by the VPS account, such as ~/.profile. Place the new directory before any distribution-provided Go directory so the shell selects the compiler you just built.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confirm which executable is selected and inspect its version:
command -v go
go version
If command -v still reports an older installation, start a new login shell or reload the profile, then check the path ordering again. Do not set GOROOT merely to make go version work; the generated command normally discovers its own tree.
When several source builds are retained, each one has its own bin directory. Switching the first entry in PATH selects the intended version without deleting another checkout. This is also the simplest rollback mechanism: restore the previous directory to the front of PATH, then verify the selected command again.
Verify the installation with a smoke test
A small program proves that the newly built command can compile and run code, rather than merely existing on disk. In a temporary directory, create hello.go:

Run it with the go now on your PATH:
go run hello.go
The expected output is:
hello, world
This test exercises the compiler, standard library, linker, and command lookup in one step. If it succeeds, record the output of go version alongside the source tag and build options.
Run the test in a directory unrelated to the Go source tree so an accidental local file cannot conceal a path mistake. If the output is correct but command -v go points somewhere unexpected, fix the path before treating the installation as complete; both the executable location and the program result are useful verification signals.
Control the target with GOOS and GOARCH
GOOS and GOARCH describe the operating system and architecture for which the resulting binaries run. They describe the target, not simply the VPS on which the build is executed. Set them deliberately when building for another machine, and verify that the particular combination is supported; not every operating-system and architecture pair is available.

This creates a bootstrap tree for the requested target. Copy that tree to the target machine and use it through GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP when building there. A bootstrap tree is not the same thing as silently changing the host architecture; the target variables must match the binaries you intend to run.
For a normal native build, leave GOOS and GOARCH at the values appropriate to the VPS. For a cross-target operation, write down both values explicitly and confirm that the destination machine can run them. An architecture listed as Linux-capable does not imply that every other operating system or architecture pairing is supported, and variants such as MIPS or PowerPC may have additional target distinctions.

The bootstrap example creates a tree that can be transferred to the target and selected with GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP. It does not by itself install the final compiler in the target account; after copying, perform the normal source build there and verify the resulting go command on that machine.
Update an existing source-built installation
To rebuild a checkout for another release, fetch repository changes, select the desired tag, and run the full script from src:
cd /path/to/goroot
git fetch
git checkout <tag>
cd src
./all.bash
Use the appropriate bootstrap compiler for the new release rather than assuming the old one remains valid. Keep the previous checkout or its bin directory until the new build passes the smoke test and any tests required by your deployment.
A practical rollback is a path change: point the service account back to the old checkout’s bin directory, verify command -v go and go version, then investigate the failed build separately. The exact retention period and service restart procedure are operational policies for your VPS.
Fetching changes without checking out the intended tag leaves the selected revision ambiguous, so make the checkout step explicit in update procedures. After rebuilding, repeat the same verification used for the first installation: inspect the selected executable, check its version, run the hello-world program, and retain the older tree until those checks pass.

The script cannot find a Go compiler
- Run
command -v goandgo versionin the same shell that starts the build. - If the required compiler is not on
PATH, setGOROOT_BOOTSTRAPto its installation root, not to itsbindirectory. - Start a fresh login shell after editing a profile so the build does not inherit stale variables.
The bootstrap version is rejected
Compare the target tag with the bootstrap matrix above. A compiler that is new enough for one release line may not satisfy another line’s documented minimum. Install or expose the required bootstrap version, then rerun the script from the same checkout.
The clone fails because the directory is not empty
Choose a new clean destination. If the directory contains an interrupted clone, inspect it before deleting it; an incomplete tree is not a reliable installation root.
The smoke test uses the old Go installation
Check command -v go and examine the order of entries in PATH. The source build’s bin directory must precede the system directory. Reload the profile or use an absolute path temporarily to distinguish a path problem from a compiler problem.
cgo-related compilation fails
Install and expose gcc or clang if cgo support is required. If cgo is intentionally unnecessary, rebuild with CGO_ENABLED=0 rather than leaving a partially configured compiler environment.
The requested cross target is unavailable
Check the supported operating-system and architecture combination before rebuilding. The presence of an architecture in the list of Linux-capable targets does not guarantee support for every other operating system or variant.
all.bash takes too long or reports a test failure
The full script deliberately runs more tests than make.bash. Preserve the test output, determine whether the failure is environmental or source-related, and do not replace a known-good production toolchain until the required test and smoke-test checks pass.
The right binary exists but the shell still uses another one
This is a path-selection problem, not necessarily a failed build. Put the checkout’s bin directory before other Go directories, reload the account’s profile, and run command -v go again. A new shell is useful because it removes stale path values inherited before the profile was edited.

The source tree was built with the wrong target variables
Check the recorded GOOS and GOARCH values and compare them with the machine that will run the binaries. Rebuild with deliberate values rather than assuming the host and destination are identical. If a bootstrap tree was copied between machines, ensure its target matches the destination before setting GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP.

What to record for another operator
A useful handoff contains more than the final version string. Include the repository URL, selected tag or commit, checkout path, bootstrap version, target values, cgo setting, and the profile or service-account configuration that places the generated bin directory on PATH. Include the successful hello-world output and, when used, the completion or failure output from all.bash.
This record distinguishes a source problem from an environment problem. It also lets another operator rebuild the same release without guessing whether the original installation came from a moving branch, an older bootstrap compiler, or a different target architecture.
Frequently Asked Questions
What bootstrap Go version do I need to build Go from source?
Go 1.5–1.19 requires Go 1.4; Go 1.20–1.21 requires Go 1.17; Go 1.22–1.23 requires Go 1.20; and Go 1.24–1.25 requires Go 1.22. Future Go 1.N releases use Go 1.M, with M equal to N minus 2 rounded down to an even number, subject to that release’s guide.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can I build Go without cgo?
Yes. Set CGO_ENABLED=0 on ./make.bash or ./all.bash. Install GCC or Clang instead when applications built with the resulting toolchain must use cgo.
How do I pin a Go source build to a release?
Clone the official repository, enter the checkout, and run git checkout <release-tag>. Record the exact tag or commit. Use a release branch only when you intentionally want maintenance changes, and use master for Go development.
Where does a source build install Go?
It installs into the checkout directory and places executables in that tree’s bin directory. The build does not automatically install under /usr/local/go; use the successful script output and add the reported directory to PATH.
Should I run make.bash or all.bash?
Run ./make.bash for the build itself. Run ./all.bash when you also want the longer standard test run, and allow more time for it to complete.
How do I verify that the new compiler is active?
Put the checkout’s bin directory first on PATH, run command -v go and go version, then compile a small hello.go program with go run hello.go. The expected output is hello, world.
Can I build a Go toolchain for another architecture?
Set GOOS and GOARCH deliberately and confirm that the combination is supported. The official bootstrap example is GOOS=linux GOARCH=ppc64 ./bootstrap.bash; the resulting bootstrap tree can be copied to the target and selected with GOROOT_BOOTSTRAP.
Is compiling Go from source better than installing a binary archive?
For an ordinary supported VPS, the precompiled archive is the quicker and simpler choice. Source builds are useful for a pinned or modified toolchain, Go development, or an operating-system and architecture combination without a suitable binary distribution.
The Bottom Line
Use a compatible bootstrap Go compiler, pin the official checkout to a release tag, run ./make.bash from src, add the generated bin directory to PATH, and verify it with go version plus a hello-world program. Use all.bash for the longer test run, set CGO_ENABLED=0 for a no-cgo build, and retain the previous checkout when updating.
