To adjust Xbox Game Bar clip quality, open Start > Settings > Gaming > Captures. Choose Standard or High under video quality, then select 30 fps or 60 fps. Record a short test with Windows + Alt + R and inspect the resulting MP4.

These controls improve the capture preset and frame rate, but Game Bar is not a full video-encoding tool: it generally does not let you choose an arbitrary output resolution, bitrate, codec, or advanced rate-control settings.

Change Game Bar video quality and frame rate

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Gaming, then Captures.
  3. Set Video quality to Standard or High.
  4. Set Video frame rate to 30 fps or 60 fps, if both choices are available.
  5. Review the recording length, audio, and save-location options shown on your Windows build.

The labels and available combinations can differ between Windows 10, Windows 11, hardware, and Xbox Game Bar versions. If you cannot find the page, search Windows Settings for Captures or open Game Bar with Windows + G, then check its Settings > Capturing panel. Updating Windows and Xbox Game Bar through the Microsoft Store may restore missing controls.

What the quality setting actually changes

“Video quality” is not the same thing as resolution. Game Bar’s normal controls cover several separate parts of a recording:

  • Quality preset: Standard or High. Microsoft does not publish a stable, universal bitrate table for these labels, so High should not be treated as a guaranteed bitrate or resolution.
  • Frame rate: Usually 30 or 60 frames per second. This affects motion smoothness and can affect file size and recording overhead.
  • Resolution: Primarily depends on the game’s render resolution and Game Bar’s capture pipeline, not on an independent resolution selector.
  • Compression: Handled automatically. The ordinary Game Bar interface does not expose codec, bitrate, or keyframe controls.
  • Audio: Configured separately from video quality.

Higher quality, higher frame rate, longer recordings, and scenes with lots of movement generally produce larger files. “High” does not mean lossless or 4K.

Choose Standard or High

Setting Best for Trade-off
Standard Small clips, older PCs, limited storage, and quick sharing More visible compression and less detail
High Fast motion, detailed textures, editing, cropping, and footage where artifacts are distracting Larger files and potentially greater performance overhead

Start with High if image detail matters and your PC has sufficient GPU, CPU, and disk headroom. Use Standard when stable gameplay, small files, or lower recording overhead matters more. The actual result depends on the game, resolution, motion, encoder, GPU, Windows build, and later upload processing.

Choose 30 fps or 60 fps

Use case Starting point
Competitive shooters, racing, sports, and rapid camera movement 60 fps, if the game and PC can sustain it
Slow-paced games, menus, strategy, or limited storage 30 fps
A game that fluctuates below 60 fps 30 fps or a stable in-game frame-rate cap
Slow-motion editing 60 fps, provided recording remains stable

A 60-fps capture setting cannot create motion that the game did not render. If gameplay varies between 40 and 50 fps, a nominal 60-fps recording may still look uneven. If 60 fps causes stutter or dropped frames, try 30 fps; OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guidance recommends the same general fallback when 60-fps recording is unreliable.

Resolution: what Game Bar can and cannot do

Keep these three settings separate:

  1. Game render resolution: Set in the game’s Graphics or Display menu.
  2. Windows display resolution: Set under Settings > System > Display.
  3. Game Bar output: Determined by its supported capture pipeline.

Microsoft Community guidance says Game Bar captures the game’s specified resolution up to 1080p and scales higher-resolution gameplay down. That is useful current guidance, but it should not be treated as a permanent guarantee for every future Windows or Game Bar build.

Can Xbox Game Bar record at 1440p or 4K? Not through the ordinary quality controls documented for Game Bar. Set the game to the resolution you want to capture, but expect Game Bar’s documented resolution limitation and scaling behavior. If selectable 1440p or 4K output is essential, use OBS Studio or compatible NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel recording software.

Do not confuse Windows Automatic Super Resolution with recording resolution. Microsoft warns that capture tools may not capture the Auto SR image as it appears on the display; the encoded clip can therefore be lower resolution than the enhanced live image. See Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution documentation.

Record a test clip and verify the file

  1. Launch the game and play a demanding section for 30–60 seconds.
  2. Press Windows + Alt + R to start recording.
  3. Press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
  4. Open Videos > Captures, the default save location, and open the MP4.
  5. Right-click the file, choose Properties > Details, and check its dimensions, frame rate where shown, duration, and size.

For complete metadata, use a local media-information utility such as MediaInfo. Checking the actual file is more reliable than assuming that a selected preset produced a particular bitrate or resolution. Also compare the local MP4 with the version on YouTube or another platform: upload services may recompress the video.

Recommended starting settings

Situation Suggested starting point
High-end PC and fast gameplay High, 60 fps
Typical mid-range gaming PC High, 60 fps; switch to Standard if performance suffers
Older laptop Standard, 30 fps
Editing for social media High, 60 fps if stable
Limited storage or bandwidth Standard, 30 fps
Stuttering at 60 fps High or Standard, 30 fps

Reduce stutter and recording overhead

Capture competes with the game for GPU encoder capacity, rendering headroom, CPU resources, disk-write bandwidth, storage, and—especially on laptops—power and memory bandwidth.

  1. Begin with High + 60 fps.
  2. Test a demanding scene.
  3. If gameplay or the clip stutters, try Standard + 60 fps.
  4. If problems remain, try High + 30 fps.
  5. Lower in-game graphics settings or cap the game at a stable frame rate.
  6. Close other recorders, overlays, cloud-sync tools, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
  7. Check free space and, if possible, record to a drive with adequate write performance.

On Windows 11, you can assign an app to a preferred GPU under Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Microsoft’s Windows graphics guidance also explains windowed-game optimizations. These settings affect the display and performance path; they are not guaranteed Game Bar image-quality improvements.

Fix blurry clips

  1. Choose High and record another local test.
  2. Confirm the game is rendering at the intended resolution.
  3. Check the MP4’s actual dimensions in file properties or MediaInfo.
  4. Determine whether Game Bar scaled a higher-resolution game down.
  5. Compare the local file with the uploaded version to identify platform recompression.
  6. Check whether Auto SR improved only the live display rather than the captured image.

Fix missing audio

Open Windows + G > Settings > Capturing and select the audio option that includes computer sounds. Microsoft documents the All choice for including system audio. Then check Windows’ playback device and per-app volume mixer, and confirm the game is not muted.

Microphone capture is separate. Use Windows + Alt + M to toggle the microphone during recording, and make a five-second test before recording a long session. Game Bar is not designed for sophisticated audio routing or separate tracks; use OBS when those features are required.

When Game Bar does not record

  • Confirm Xbox Game Bar is enabled and the target app is a supported game or window.
  • Install pending Windows and Xbox Game Bar updates.
  • Check for protected content, permissions, conflicting overlays, or security policies.
  • If you use a Windows N edition, install the appropriate Media Feature Pack; missing media components can affect Game Bar and Game DVR.
  • If quality controls look different, use Settings search for Captures and verify the output file rather than relying only on labels.

Registry edits are not a first-line quality solution. They may toggle Game Bar behavior, but they do not provide a complete, supported replacement for resolution, bitrate, codec, and audio controls.

When to switch to OBS or another recorder

Game Bar is the better choice when you want a quick, low-setup clip. Switch to OBS Studio when you need custom resolution, bitrate or quality-based encoding, codec and encoder selection, multiple audio tracks, scenes, webcam layouts, overlays, streaming, or more detailed diagnostics. OBS requires more setup and can also cause performance problems if configured poorly.
