The feature launched as an Xbox Insider preview for Game Pass Ultimate members on December 11, 2024, but Microsoft’s current public pages describe cloud gaming—including select owned games—as a benefit of Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Eligibility still depends on the individual game, edition, region, plan, and device.
What “Stream Your Own Game” actually means
Xbox Cloud Gaming has two related uses:
- Game Pass catalog streaming: You stream a game included with your active Game Pass plan while it remains in the catalog.
- Owned-game streaming: You separately own or purchase an eligible digital game, then stream it through Microsoft’s cloud with a qualifying Game Pass subscription.
This does not mean that every Xbox game in your library becomes playable through the cloud. Microsoft describes the feature as supporting select cloud-playable games. The live catalog can change by time, region, plan, platform, licensing, and game edition. Check Xbox Play or the cloud badge on your console before subscribing specifically for one title.

It is also different from Xbox Remote Play. Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox, so your console must be available and capable of running it.

Microsoft’s current Xbox pages list cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. That is different from the original console rollout, which required Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Insider access. Older articles calling Ultimate the only requirement may accurately describe that 2024 preview, but they should not automatically be treated as the current rule.

Ultimate remains the most complete option, with Microsoft positioning it as the tier offering the broadest catalog, day-one releases, additional memberships and benefits, and the best stated cloud quality and shortest wait times. But a cheaper tier may be sufficient if your particular owned game is supported on it in your region.
Cloud Gaming is currently described as supporting Xbox One and later consoles, including:
- Xbox One
- Xbox One S
- Xbox One X
- Xbox Series S
- Xbox Series X
You also need a supported region, a qualifying subscription, a compatible game, an internet connection, and a compatible controller where required. Microsoft’s cloud-gaming FAQ warns that availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform.
How to stream an owned game on Xbox
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the digital game and has the qualifying Game Pass subscription.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Full library.
- Open Owned Games.
- Find a title showing the cloud badge.
- If necessary, choose Filter → Ready to play → Cloud gaming.
- Select the game and choose Play with Cloud Gaming.
The game should launch without a local installation. That can save storage and avoid a lengthy download or update. On Xbox One, it can also allow access to selected games designed for Xbox Series X|S that the console cannot run locally.

Which games qualify?
The supported library is dynamic rather than a permanent compatibility list. Microsoft’s initial announcement included more than 50 owned games, with examples such as Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Baldur’s Gate 3, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Dredge, and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Those examples are historical, not a guarantee that every title remains available everywhere. Microsoft later described more than 250 supported owned games for the Xbox PC app, while its current public pages direct users to the live cloud library. The safest test is whether the game currently appears with a cloud option on your intended device.
Keep these limitations in mind:
- Ownership generally means a supported digital license attached to your Microsoft/Xbox account.
- A physical Xbox disc does not become a cloud license simply because you own or insert it.
- Owning a game does not guarantee that its edition is cloud-enabled.
- A game may be downloadable locally but unavailable for cloud streaming.
- A game may be streamable without being included in Game Pass.
- Console, browser, Xbox PC app, TV, and handheld availability may differ.
If a game leaves the Game Pass catalog, separately owning it may still allow streaming if it remains on the supported owned-game list. Conversely, a title can be in Game Pass but unavailable in the cloud because not every catalog game is cloud-enabled.

Why Xbox One owners may benefit most
For Series X|S owners, the immediate advantages are avoiding downloads, reducing storage use, and starting a game quickly. For Xbox One owners, the feature can be more significant: selected Series X|S games can be played through the cloud even though the older console cannot run them locally.

- BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.
- UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
That does not turn an Xbox One into a Series X|S. You remain dependent on the stream, and only supported titles work. Still, it can extend the useful life of an Xbox One for players who want to try newer games without buying new hardware.
Using owned-game streaming on other devices
On a supported PC, phone, tablet, or other browser-compatible device:
- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Apple Safari.
- Go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the account holding the subscription and game license.
- Find the Stream your own game section.
- Select an eligible title and connect a compatible controller.
- Start streaming.
Microsoft has also supported cloud access through the Xbox app on compatible Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and the Xbox Cloud Gaming app on supported Meta Quest headsets. The Xbox PC app received an Insider rollout in July 2025, followed by a broader update describing more than 250 owned games. These device-specific libraries and requirements can change.
Microsoft recommends a compatible controller for most cloud games. Xbox controllers are the straightforward choice, but Microsoft has also identified compatible DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Adaptive Controller, and selected third-party controllers.

Connection requirements
Microsoft’s general cloud-gaming guidance lists:
- 10 Mbps minimum download speed in its general FAQ guidance.
- About 20 Mbps recommended for consoles, PCs, and tablets for better quality.
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless play.
- Ethernet where possible.
Bandwidth is only part of the experience. Latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, and the distance between you and Microsoft’s servers can matter more than the advertised speed of your internet plan. A connection that looks fast in a speed test can still produce blurry video, stutter, or delayed controls.
If the cloud option is missing
A missing cloud badge is not automatically a console fault. Check these possibilities in order:
- The title is unsupported: The game may simply not be in the current owned-game streaming library.
- The edition is unsupported: A different edition or platform version may be required.
- The wrong account is signed in: Confirm that the purchase and Game Pass subscription use the same Microsoft account.
- Your plan or region differs: Current plan access and game availability can vary geographically.
- The console is outdated or offline: Update the console and verify its network connection.
- Availability changed: Licensing or platform eligibility may have changed temporarily or permanently.
Do not assume reinstalling the Xbox app will fix the problem until the game’s current cloud eligibility has been confirmed.

Cloud streaming versus downloading
| Consideration | Cloud streaming | Local download |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Uses little or no game-installation space | Requires available drive space |
| Internet | Required throughout play | Usually needed for downloading and updates, but supports offline play where licensing allows |
| Latency | Depends on network conditions and server distance | Generally more consistent |
| Image quality | Can vary with connection and service conditions | Uses the console’s local rendering capabilities |
| Game selection | Limited to supported cloud titles | Usually broader, subject to console compatibility |
| Convenience | Fast start with no large download | Slower initial setup but more independence afterward |
Downloading is usually better for offline play, competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games, precision platformers, specialized peripherals, and the most stable image quality. Cloud streaming is attractive for testing a game, saving storage, or starting quickly.
Best Value
Is Game Pass Ultimate worth it?
Ultimate is the best fit if you want the largest catalog, day-one releases, cross-device use, the strongest stated cloud priority and quality, or benefits such as EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, and online console multiplayer.
Essential or Premium may be enough if you mainly want occasional cloud access, already own most of your games, and have confirmed that your target title is supported on that plan in your region. Someone who primarily downloads games locally may gain little by paying for Ultimate solely for cloud streaming.
Do not subscribe on the assumption that owning one game makes cloud access free. The game may need to be purchased separately, and cloud streaming still requires a qualifying Game Pass plan. Check the live Game Pass page and your account’s regional checkout details before paying; prices and plan terms can vary.
Microsoft also says recurring billing is enabled by default. Turn it off if you do not want the subscription to renew automatically.
Alternatives
- Download locally: Best for offline play, low latency, stable quality, and unsupported cloud titles.
- Xbox Remote Play: Best for streaming games installed on your own Xbox and accessing a larger personal library, provided the console is available.
- A newer Xbox: Best for local Series X|S performance without cloud latency, but it costs more upfront.
- PC or handheld native play: Best for PC-specific features, mods, keyboard and mouse support, higher settings, or offline access where the appropriate version is available.
Verdict
“Stream Your Own Game” is a useful expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming, particularly for saving storage, trying games immediately, and letting Xbox One owners play selected Series X|S titles. It is not a way to stream an entire Xbox library, and ownership alone is not enough.
The decisive checks are the game’s current cloud badge, your regional Game Pass terms, and the quality of your connection. If all three line up, cloud streaming can be a convenient alternative to downloading. If you need offline access, dependable low latency, or a game outside Microsoft’s supported list, install it locally instead.
