On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, you can manage social visibility, communication and multiplayer, app access, family restrictions, and optional diagnostic collection from Settings. You can also manage an account online after signing in. Menu labels can differ slightly after console software updates, so use the closest current wording you see.
Start by identifying the result you want: limit who can follow you, restrict messages or multiplayer, change a child’s permissions, or reduce optional diagnostic data. Change only that category. A diagnostic-data preference does not automatically change game-publisher sharing, app permissions, or every account privacy choice.

What Xbox privacy and data-sharing settings control
Xbox settings operate at different levels. Some affect your Microsoft account everywhere it is used on Xbox; others affect a family member, a particular app or service, or the console when nobody is signed in.
| Setting area | What it controls | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Social privacy | Who can send friend requests, follow an account, or see social activity such as clubs | Your account, or the family member selected by an organizer |
| Communication and multiplayer | Who can communicate with you and whether multiplayer features are available | Account and, for children, organizer-managed family settings |
| App privacy and permissions | What apps and games can access or do through Xbox privacy controls | Account or app/service context, depending on the option |
| Data collection | Optional diagnostic information sent to Microsoft to help operate and improve Xbox | Signed-in account, a managed family member, or the console when nobody is signed in |
| Publisher or service sharing | Information that may be shared with the publisher of a game or app you use | The game or app service; not controlled by one Xbox diagnostic switch |
Microsoft classifies personal data collected through its products and services as Required or Optional. The Xbox-specific data collection summary published in October 2026 explains the categories and available controls. It also states that an Xbox console sends approximately 8 MB of data per day on average, although the exact amount varies by user. That is Microsoft’s stated average, not a guaranteed amount for your console.

Before changing a setting
A short check can prevent most privacy-setting mistakes:
- Identify the account or family member whose behavior needs to change.
- Decide whether the issue involves social contact, communication, multiplayer, an app permission, or diagnostic collection.
- Note whether the account is signed in. The unsigned-in console control is a different context from an individual account preference.
- If you are using the website, have the Microsoft account credentials ready and plan to select Submit before closing the page.
- Read the description next to an option instead of choosing the broadest or most restrictive value automatically.
These checks matter because Xbox privacy is a set of targeted controls. Changing a follower setting will not necessarily affect voice chat, and changing optional diagnostics will not rewrite a game’s own privacy policy.
How do I change Xbox privacy settings?
Use the console route below for your own account. If you are managing a child or another family member, use the family procedure instead of changing your own profile.
- Sign in to the Xbox account whose settings you want to change.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account, then Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy.
- Choose View details & customize.
- Open the category that matches your goal, such as Friends, followers & clubs, communication, multiplayer, or app privacy.
- Choose the least-open option that still supports the people and services you intend to use. Options such as allowing everyone are not neutral privacy choices; they can expose activity or communications.
- Leave the page only after the setting shows your intended value. If you use the online management route, select Submit to save.
Change who can send requests or follow you
For social visibility, the documented path is Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Friends, followers & clubs. Review each available choice rather than changing the entire privacy profile. A tighter setting can reduce unwanted contact while still allowing selected friends to play with you through other permissions.
Change communication or multiplayer access
From View details & customize, select the communication and multiplayer categories. Read the description beside each choice before saving. Communication controls can affect messages, voice or text interactions, and invitations; multiplayer controls can affect whether an account joins online games. The exact labels and available choices can change with console software revisions.
Review app and game privacy
App-related controls are separate from social settings. Open the app-privacy category under the same customization area and check which permissions apply to the account or service. Changing a social setting will not necessarily alter what an individual game or app can do.
Account, family, app, and console scope
When a setting seems ineffective, first ask where it applies. An account-level choice follows that account, while a family organizer’s change applies to the selected family member. An app or publisher may have its own service context, and the unsigned-in data option concerns the console when no account is active.

For example, changing your own follower setting does not change a child’s follower setting. Selecting a child in family management does not change the organizer’s profile. Turning off optional collection for a signed-in account is also different from reviewing Allow optional data collection for the console’s unsigned-in state. Keeping these scopes separate makes it easier to test a change and explain it to other household members.
Can I change Xbox privacy settings online?
Yes. Microsoft provides an online route after you sign in. The web interface can be useful when you are away from the console or managing several family accounts.
- Sign in to the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings with the account that should be changed.
- Select the correct profile. Family organizers must select the family member they intend to manage, not the organizer profile by mistake.
- Open the relevant privacy, communication, multiplayer, or app category.
- Choose the desired value and review the other options on the page.
- Select Submit before leaving. Xbox Wire specifically instructs users to submit online changes; closing the page without doing so can leave the previous values in place.
There is no universal propagation time established for every Xbox setting. If another console still shows the old behavior, verify the account and category first, then sign out and back in or check the current Xbox Support guidance.
How do I adjust Xbox data sharing?
Optional diagnostic collection is managed separately from social privacy. It concerns information Microsoft uses to operate, troubleshoot, and improve Xbox. It should not be presented as a master control that blocks every game publisher, app, or account data flow.
Recommended Free Tools
For the account currently using the console
- Open Settings.
- Go to Online safety & family.
- Choose Privacy & online safety.
- Select Data collection.
- Review the optional-data choice and select the value that fits your preference.
If the console presents a different but equivalent label, look for the data-collection or diagnostic-data section under privacy and online safety. Microsoft has documented this route for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, while noting that wording can change between software versions.
For a child or another family member
- Sign in as the family organizer.
- Open Settings > Online safety & family.
- Select Family settings > Manage family members.
- Choose the specific family member.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Data collection.
- Review and save the setting for that member.
The selected profile matters: changing the organizer’s data preference does not change a child’s account. A child cannot override restrictions imposed by the family organizer.
When nobody is signed in
Xbox documents a separate console-level control for periods when no account is signed in. Open Settings > System > Console info, then review Allow optional data collection. This context differs from an individual account preference: it governs the console’s behavior when there is no signed-in user to supply account settings.

How can I change my child’s Xbox privacy settings?
Microsoft Family Safety supports family groups across Windows, Xbox, and mobile devices. Parents or guardians should manage a child’s Xbox profile through the family organizer account and select the child as the target before changing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm that the child is listed in the correct Microsoft family group.
- Open Xbox privacy and online-safety settings while signed in as the organizer.
- Select the child’s profile in Manage family members.
- Review the age-appropriate defaults first. These defaults are designed to provide a baseline for a child’s age.
- Customize only the categories that need different treatment, such as communication, multiplayer, clubs, app access, or data collection.
- Save the changes and test the behavior with the child’s account, not the organizer’s account.
Age-appropriate defaults are not the same as a recommendation to allow every feature. Choose settings based on the child’s age, the people they play with, and whether you want messages, voice chat, or multiplayer invitations available. Organizer restrictions remain in force even if the child opens the same settings page.
What is the difference between Required and Optional Xbox data?
Microsoft’s October 2026 Xbox data collection summary separates personal data into two broad classes:
- Required data: Information Microsoft identifies as necessary to provide, secure, maintain, or operate the product or service.
- Optional data: Additional information that can support diagnostics, product improvement, and related analysis, with a user choice available in the documented data-collection controls.
The optional setting changes the collection choice Microsoft exposes for Xbox. It does not erase all information already associated with an account, and it does not make a console invisible to every service. For broader account access, deletion, and management, Microsoft identifies the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard and Xbox privacy settings as separate tools.
Using the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard
If your question is about accessing, deleting, or managing information associated with your Microsoft account rather than choosing an Xbox diagnostic preference, use the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard as well as the Xbox settings. These tools serve different purposes. The dashboard is not a substitute for selecting a communication, multiplayer, family, or app option on the console, and the Xbox data-collection control is not a complete account-data history.
What happens when you use a game or app?
When someone uses an online game or app through an Xbox console, Microsoft says it may share information with that game’s or app’s publisher to support, deliver, or improve the service. The publisher’s processing is therefore a separate consideration from Microsoft’s optional diagnostic-data setting.
- Turning off optional diagnostic collection does not promise to stop all information going to a game publisher.
- Changing who can follow you does not automatically change an app’s own account or privacy controls.
- Restricting multiplayer does not necessarily remove data already held by a third-party service.
- Review the game’s or app’s own privacy notice and settings when your concern is service-specific data.
This separation is why changing one switch rarely resolves every privacy question. Match the setting to the service and the type of information you want to control.

Common mistakes and fixes
Changing the wrong profile
Family organizers often open their own profile and assume the child inherited the change. Return to Manage family members, select the intended person, and check the value while that profile is highlighted.
Changing a social control when the problem is diagnostic data
Friend, follower, communication, and multiplayer settings do not replace the data-collection control. Use the Data collection path for optional diagnostics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If the concern involves a particular game or app, review that service’s privacy options. Microsoft’s Xbox summary expressly distinguishes Xbox controls from information shared with a publisher that supports or improves its service.
Leaving the online page without submitting
Online edits require Submit. Reopen the page after saving to confirm that the displayed value is the one you chose.
Expecting identical labels on every console
Xbox menu wording can shift with software revisions. Use the account, online-safety, family, privacy, data-collection, and console-info sections as landmarks, and compare the description beside each option before selecting it.
Seeing old behavior after a change
- Confirm that you changed the correct account or family member.
- Confirm that you changed the category related to the behavior.
- If you used the website, verify that you selected Submit.
- Sign out and back in, then test with the affected profile.
- If the setting still appears ineffective, consult the current Xbox Support instructions for your console software version. Microsoft has not published one universal delay that applies to every privacy change.
How Microsoft describes its privacy approach
Microsoft’s Xbox data summary says the Required-versus-Optional classification is intended to make choices easier to understand. Xbox Wire also described the company’s approach in a September 15, 2020 statement from the Xbox team: Trust among our users is crucial, and moving ahead, we’ll continue to listen and support your preferences on your data collection and privacy.
In practical terms, that means using the control that matches the decision you are making: account visibility for social contact, communication and multiplayer for interactions, family settings for a child’s profile, app controls for a service-specific permission, and data collection for optional Xbox diagnostics.

Key takeaway
Xbox privacy is a set of targeted controls. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open the relevant account or family privacy section, select the exact category, and save online changes with Submit. Treat optional diagnostic collection, social visibility, and game-publisher data sharing as different issues so that a change solves the problem you actually have.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change Xbox privacy settings?
On the console, sign in to the intended account and open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize. Choose the social, communication, multiplayer, or app category that matches your goal. If you use the online settings page, select Submit before leaving. For a child, select the child’s profile through family management instead of changing the organizer’s profile.
How do I adjust Xbox data sharing?
For a signed-in account, open Settings > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Data collection and review the optional-data choice. For a family member, an organizer must open Family settings > Manage family members, select that person, and then open Privacy & online safety > Data collection. When nobody is signed in, review Settings > System > Console info > Allow optional data collection.

Can I change Xbox privacy settings online?
Yes. Sign in to Microsoft’s Xbox privacy and online-safety settings, select the correct account or family member, open the relevant category, choose the value, and select Submit. The correct profile is especially important for organizers managing children. If the old value remains visible, verify that the page was submitted and that you changed the category related to the behavior.
How can I change my child’s Xbox privacy settings?
Sign in as the family organizer, open the family settings, select the child under Manage family members, and review the age-appropriate defaults. Customize only the needed categories, such as communication, multiplayer, clubs, app access, or data collection. A child cannot override restrictions imposed by the organizer, and changing the organizer’s own profile does not change the child’s settings.
Does turning off optional Xbox data collection stop game publishers from receiving data?
No. Microsoft says it may share information with the publisher of an online game or app to support, deliver, or improve that service. The Xbox optional diagnostic setting concerns Microsoft’s collection choice and is not a universal block on publisher sharing. For a service-specific concern, review that game or app’s own privacy notice and controls.
Why did my Xbox privacy change not take effect?
First confirm that you changed the intended account or family member and selected the category related to the issue. Online changes require Submit. Sign out and back in, then test with the affected profile. Menu wording can vary by software version, and Microsoft has not established one universal propagation delay for every privacy setting, so consult current Xbox Support if the value still appears ineffective.

Microsoft’s October 2026 Xbox data summary describes Required data as information needed to provide, secure, maintain, or operate the service. Optional data is additional information that can support diagnostics and product improvement. The optional control does not erase all account information or control every app and publisher. Microsoft also identifies the Privacy Dashboard for broader access, deletion, and management.
The Bottom Line
Choose the Xbox control that matches the problem: social settings for followers and clubs, communication or multiplayer settings for interactions, family settings for a child, app controls for a specific service, and Data collection for optional Xbox diagnostics. Confirm the account or console scope, and select Submit when saving online.
