Start by checking the current live patch notes for the hero and platform you play. Then practice the changed weapon or targeting behavior separately from the ability’s new timing. A rework does not automatically mean you should change sensitivity: the patch may affect aim assist, weapon behavior, an ability, or none of those.
What changed—and what did not?
Before changing your habits, compare the hero’s current kit with the version you learned. Look for changes to weapon behavior, targeting or aim assist, an ability’s effect, its cooldown, and whether a function is now part of the base kit or depends on a perk. Blizzard says modernized kits aim for “simplicity and flexibility,” while reworks may also improve functionality, preserve hero identity, or address balance. Those goals do not tell you what to adjust for a particular hero; the patch notes do.

Use the current live notes rather than relying on remembered values. For example, Blizzard’s April 14, 2026 patch notes changed console Hitscan Auto Assist strength and said Legacy Strength Mode was unaffected. That distinction matters: an aim-assist change on console is not a universal instruction to alter sensitivity, and it does not establish a change for every platform or targeting mode.
The same patch made specific cooldown and kit changes: Roadhog’s Chain Hook cooldown went from 6 to 8 seconds, while Reaper’s Dire Triggers moved into the base kit with its cooldown going from 3 to 6 seconds. These are examples from those patch notes, not current values to assume for every later patch or every player’s setup.

How to adjust your aim after a rework
- Identify the affected behavior. Determine whether the notes changed the weapon, projectile or hitscan behavior, targeting, aim assist, or an ability that influences how you engage. If none of those changed, there may be no reason to alter your aim settings.
- Keep settings steady while you learn. In repeatable practice conditions, work on the changed weapon or targeting behavior without changing sensitivity between attempts. This helps you distinguish a new gameplay pattern from a settings adjustment. If the patch itself changed a setting—such as console aim-assist strength—test that setting deliberately rather than assuming sensitivity must also change.
- Practice the changed action on its own. Rehearse the relevant aim task, such as tracking, leading a projectile, or placing a precision ability, under consistent conditions. These are practical suggestions, not an official Blizzard drill or a tested performance guarantee.
- Review before making another change. If your aim feels different, check that you are using the intended platform option and the live version of the hero. Change one relevant setting at a time only when the patch or your own repeatable practice points to a settings problem.
Blizzard’s May 12, 2026 patch notes show why the exact ability matters: Emre’s Cyber Frag received a smaller minimum explosion radius, which the developer comments connected to precision. A precision change can alter where you need to place an action without requiring a sensitivity change.
How to relearn cooldown timing
- Write down the current cooldown and effect. Use the live hero notes or in-game information; do not carry over an old value from memory.
- Practice the decision, not just the button press. In repeatable matches or practice, notice which situation makes the ability worth spending. A longer cooldown can make an impulsive use costlier; a changed effect can make the old trigger condition less useful.
- Track when it is available again. After using it, observe the current availability cue and build a new sense of when you can rely on it. Where the interface exposes cooldown information in a changed way, include that cue in your practice.
- Reassess after another patch. Cooldown values can change again, so treat your new timing as tied to the live version, not as a permanent property of the hero.
The May 12 notes provide a second kind of timing example: Freja’s Updraft cooldown was reduced from 12 to 10 seconds. They also made Ramattra’s Void Barrier cooldown visible while Nemesis Form was active. One affects how soon the action can be used again; the other improves visibility of availability. Neither change implies the same adjustment for other abilities.

Read the patch note for the specific kind of change
A patch can alter aim assistance, precision, ability availability, or interface clarity independently. The May 12 notes describe Cyber Frag’s smaller minimum explosion radius as a precision change, Freja’s shorter Updraft cooldown as a mobility change, and Ramattra’s visible Void Barrier cooldown during Nemesis Form as a clarity change. Separate those effects before deciding what to practice: aim placement, use frequency, and awareness of availability are different skills.

Blizzard has also described its rework planning as provisional. In “Director’s Take: Small Steps, Big Leaps,” Alec Dawson called Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog an “extremely early shortlist” that was “subject to change.” That is not a confirmed schedule or a definitive list of current reworks, so check the live notes for the hero you actually play.
