If you want horror atmosphere with enemies you can actively fight, Resident Evil 4 (2023) is the closest fit here: it mixes shooting, close combat, knife parries and weapon switching, while still retaining survival-horror pressure. Dead Space (2023) is another combat-focused option, but its survival framing and tense setting remain central. For relentless combat with a horror edge rather than survival horror, consider DOOM Eternal.
How these games balance action and survival
“More action” does not necessarily mean low tension, plentiful supplies or no vulnerability. The games below differ in how often you fight, how much control you have during encounters, and how strongly scarcity and fear shape play. There is no common official scale for those qualities, so the comparison is descriptive rather than a scored ranking.

| Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) | Frequent shooting and close combat, including knife parries, weapon switching and ammunition crafting. | Still survival horror: dangerous encounters and resource use matter. | Third-person action in a horror setting. | PS4 and PS5 (US PlayStation listing). |
| Dead Space (2023 remake) | Combat against Necromorphs is central to Isaac’s struggle aboard the USG Ishimura. | Explicitly framed by EA as a survival-horror remake; tension and fighting for survival remain part of the premise. | Science-fiction horror aboard a mining ship. | PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (EA announcement). |
| DOOM Eternal | Fast, “push-forward” first-person combat built around speed and power. | Horror-adjacent atmosphere, but the cited listing supports an action-first description, not a survival-horror label. | First-person demon combat. | The cited PlayStation listing covers PlayStation; it does not establish other platforms here. |
Resident Evil 4 (2023): the closest match for action within survival horror
The remake pairs horror sequences with action and gives you several ways to respond when enemies close in. PlayStation describes shooting and close combat, plus a knife that can be used for stealth kills, last-second escapes and parries. Quick-swapping weapons helps you react without digging through inventory during a fight. The listing also describes ammunition crafting and an auto-sort inventory feature.

Those tools make encounters feel active, but they do not remove the survival-horror side. Capcom describes the series as survival horror in which players use weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations; PlayStation likewise emphasizes dangerous encounters. Expect to manage resources and remain vulnerable, rather than treating every room as a straightforward action arena.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
The US PlayStation listing categorizes the game as Horror, Adventure and Action, supports PS4 and PS5, and gives the remake’s release date as March 24, 2023. It also says newcomers can enjoy it without prior knowledge of the series. Capcom announced the remake in 2022 as a reimagining of the 2005 game.
Dead Space (2023): combat inside a survival-horror framework
Set aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, the remake follows engineer Isaac Clarke as he faces Necromorphs and fights to survive. Its science-fiction setting gives the horror a different texture from Resident Evil 4, while combat remains a defining part of the threat Isaac must confront.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
EA calls the 2023 release a remake of a survival-horror classic, so it is best for players who want to fight back but still welcome sustained tension and a survival premise. EA announced its release for January 27, 2023, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The original 2008 game has been described by EA on a localized page as an “Action Horror Shooter”; that label refers to the original and should not be treated as a definitive genre label for the remake.
DOOM Eternal: choose it when action matters more than survival horror
DOOM Eternal is the most action-first choice on this list. PlayStation describes its combat as fast, “push-forward” first-person action emphasizing speed and power, with demon combat, Horde Mode and multiplayer also noted in the listing. That makes it a reasonable pick if what you want is intense combat with a horror edge.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
It is not a close substitute for survival horror: the cited description supports an action-first, horror-adjacent recommendation, not a survival-horror classification. Choose it for the action side of the request rather than for resource scarcity or the same kind of vulnerability found in the other two games.
