You generally do not need to allocate RAM manually in current tModLoader. The 1.4 release is 64-bit by default, and its official troubleshooting advice is to inspect mod memory estimates and reduce memory-heavy mods—not install an old 64-bit build or use an undocumented Steam launch flag.
Check which tModLoader version you’re using
The old memory advice applies to tModLoader 1.3, not the current 1.4 release. The project’s guide describes 1.3 as a 32-bit application with an address-space ceiling of approximately 4 GiB. Current 1.4 is 64-bit by default, so installing the separate old “tModLoader 64 bit” build is unnecessary. The tModLoader project FAQ warns: “Please do not attempt to install "tModLoader 64 bit" into tModLoader, it is no longer useful and will prevent the game from launching correctly.”
That historical 1.3 ceiling is an architectural limit, not a stated memory cap for 1.4. More physical RAM does not turn a 32-bit program into a 64-bit one, and the old 1.3 workaround is not current setup advice.
Use tModLoader’s mod memory estimates
If you’re troubleshooting memory use in 1.4, check which enabled mods consume the most before changing hardware or launch settings. The project documents a built-in estimate graph:

- Open Settings → tModLoader Settings and enable Show Mod Memory Estimates.
- Return to the main menu, close the game, and reopen it.
- Enable or reload the mods you want to check, then inspect the memory graph.
- Consider disabling or removing mods that use a large share of memory relative to how much you value them.

Compare your system RAM with the listed requirements
Steam’s published requirements are for the game, not a guarantee that every mod collection will fit. Its listing notes that additional requirements may vary with installed Workshop items. The figures below are the platform requirements listed by Steam in 2020:

Check the Steam tModLoader listing for the published requirements. A large or demanding mod set can change practical needs, so the listed figures should not be read as a promise for a particular collection.
When adding RAM might help—and when it won’t
More installed RAM may help if your computer is short of system memory while running tModLoader and other software. Whether an upgrade is possible depends on your device, and the game’s system requirements alone cannot establish that a particular computer will benefit. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for compatible memory before upgrading.

Adding RAM does not raise a 32-bit process’s address-space ceiling, and it cannot guarantee a fix for a specific mod’s memory use. There is no published benchmark here quantifying how much a RAM upgrade would improve any particular mod collection.

Steam’s general launch options documentation does not document a tModLoader setting for assigning a fixed amount of memory. It also notes that many launch-option examples are game-specific. Do not treat flags such as -Xmx or -heapsize as confirmed tModLoader RAM controls; the cited guidance provides no basis for recommending them as a fix.
