To appear offline on Steam while staying connected, open Friends & Chat, select the presence menu beside your avatar, and choose Invisible. Steam says this makes you appear offline to other players while keeping your friends list, messages, and community features available. Choose a different option if you want to stop notifications, disconnect from Steam, or hide activity for one game.
Set your Steam status to Invisible
- Open Friends & Chat in the Steam client. Steam also provides access to this interface through a web browser.
- Open the presence menu beside your profile avatar.
- Select Invisible.
Steam describes Invisible as appearing offline to other players while still allowing you to view your friends list, send and receive messages, and participate in the community. See Steam Friends & Chat for Steam’s status definitions. Valve also described the mode as allowing users to appear offline while retaining Friends List and chat access in its friends list, voice, and chat update.
The documented path is the general Friends & Chat interface; menu placement and labels may differ across Steam clients. Invisible controls Steam presence, not every signal a game may expose to other players.
Choose the right option for what you want to hide

Use Do Not Disturb to quiet alerts
If you want to keep your usual presence behavior but stop interruptions, choose Do Not Disturb from the presence menu instead of Invisible. Steam defines Do Not Disturb by its effect on notifications, including chat, invites, and other requests; it is not described as an offline-appearance setting. Use Offline Mode to disconnect Steam
Offline Mode is different from selecting Offline as your presence status. It lets you play through Steam without an active Steam Network connection, so online-dependent features will not work. Steam recommends preparing while connected before switching modes:
- Update the Steam client and the games you want to play.
- While online, check that each game you plan to play launches successfully.
- Open the Steam menu and select Go Offline…, then follow the prompt to enter Offline Mode.

Hide activity for a particular game
To hide one game’s ownership and activity rather than appear offline across Steam, use that game’s Mark Private control. Steam says Private Games hide ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity for the selected game. This is not the same as using Hide in your Library: Library Hide changes how the game appears in your own Library view, while Mark Private is the privacy control for other people.
Private Games does not guarantee invisibility in every multiplayer context. Steam notes that your Steam ID may be visible to other players on the same multiplayer server, and a friend you invited may see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect. What Invisible does—and does not—conceal
Invisible is the appropriate Steam presence setting when you want to use Friends & Chat without appearing online to other players. It is not a promise of anonymity: Steam’s description concerns your Steam presence, and game-specific multiplayer signals can still reveal information. For broader concerns such as harassment, Steam’s guidance on abuse, harassment, and other misconduct also covers privacy and chat controls.
