Vanilla Left 4 Dead 2 cannot permanently pin a chosen survivor model to an individual player. To do that on a dedicated server, run SourceMod and install a survivor-model plugin. The most direct option exposes sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name> to an administrator; another option, Survivor Chat Select 2, lets players choose models or lets admins force them. Plugin and custom-model compatibility varies, so test on a private server before using the setup in a public campaign.

What you can and cannot do in a vanilla server
Left 4 Dead 2 normally assigns survivors through the game’s own roster and lobby flow. The base game does not provide a server command that says “always make this Steam player Nick” or “give this player Rochelle every round.” You therefore cannot create reliable per-player model assignments with only the stock server configuration.

The practical solution is a server-side extension:
- SourceMod provides the command and permission framework.
- A survivor-model plugin changes the model selected for a player.
This controls the character model shown for that player. It does not automatically mean that every part of the survivor’s identity—voice lines, scripted dialogue, animations, or campaign logic—will behave exactly as it does for the original survivor. Treat model assignment and full survivor identity as separate compatibility questions, especially with custom content.
Choose a plugin before changing the server
Three options appear in the available material, but they do not have the same level of confirmation or the same control model.

References to “L4D2Tools” and commands such as sm_model or sm_surv are also unconfirmed in the available material. Do not build a production configuration around those names until the current plugin documentation and source have been checked.
Requirements and a safe test plan
Server requirements
- A dedicated Left 4 Dead 2 server on which you can install and restart SourceMod plugins.
- A working SourceMod installation. Confirm that SourceMod itself loads before troubleshooting a survivor plugin.
- File access to the server’s SourceMod plugin directory and permission to restart the server or change maps.
- A test map, a second player account if possible, and a recent backup of the server configuration.
Why a private test matters
A model plugin can fail in several different places: the plugin may not load, the command may be hidden by permissions, the selected model may be incompatible, or the game may replace the model during a round transition. Testing privately lets you separate those causes without disrupting a public lobby.

Install a survivor-model plugin
- Confirm SourceMod first. From the server console, use SourceMod’s plugin-list command and verify that SourceMod responds. If SourceMod is not running, install or repair it before adding a model plugin.
- Back up the current server files. Save your existing plugin directory and configuration files so you can remove the model plugin cleanly if it causes errors.
- Choose one plugin for the first test. Do not install several plugins that attempt to change survivor models at the same time. Their hooks and commands can conflict, making failures difficult to diagnose.
- Upload the compiled plugin. Place
l4d2_sm_setmodel.smx, or the compiled Survivor Chat Select 2 plugin, in the server’s SourceModpluginsdirectory. Keep any configuration file or companion file in the location specified by that plugin’s current documentation. - Restart or reload. Restart the server or change the map so SourceMod loads the new plugin. Then list loaded plugins and look for the plugin’s exact name and status.
- Read the server log immediately. A load error, missing dependency, or unsupported binary is more useful than repeatedly trying the command in chat.
- Test with stock survivors first. Use the game’s standard survivor models before introducing Workshop replacements. This establishes whether the assignment mechanism works at all.
Do not assume that a downloaded source file is ready to use. The older Set Survivor Models release is specifically reported to fail compilation on some newer or beta SourceMod branches. If the supplied .sp source does not compile, check the plugin’s current maintenance status and SourceMod compatibility rather than weakening compiler settings or copying an unrelated binary.
Using Set Survivor Models
Administrator assignment
The documented administrator command is:
sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name>Replace <player> with the target player recognized by the server and <survivor name> with the survivor requested by the plugin. Use the plugin’s own help output or documentation for accepted names and matching rules; do not assume that a display name, partial name, or Steam name is parsed identically on every build.

This command requires the plugin’s CHEATS admin flag. If the command exists but reports that you lack access, the first check is the admin flag assignment, not the model name. If the command is completely unknown, check whether the plugin loaded and whether another plugin changed or removed the command.
Allowing a player to choose
Set Survivor Models also exposes:
sm_setmymodelWhether ordinary players may use that command is controlled by a plugin cvar. The exact cvar name and accepted values must come from the version you installed. Find it in the plugin’s configuration or cvar list, then decide whether to allow self-selection, restrict it to admins, or leave it disabled. Enabling player control on a public server can produce inconsistent rosters and should be tested with the campaign modes your community actually runs.

What to verify after a successful command
- The targeted player changes to the requested model rather than the administrator’s model.
- The change survives the next relevant event, such as a round restart or player respawn, if persistence is important to your use case.
- Other players see the same model and do not receive a missing-model or error-material effect.
- The server log does not report repeated model errors after the assignment.
If the model changes once and then reverts, that is evidence of an interaction with a spawn, round, or campaign transition. It is not proof that the command failed; record exactly when the replacement occurs before changing several settings at once.
Using Survivor Chat Select 2
Survivor Chat Select 2 is aimed at in-game selection rather than an administrator-only command. Its documented behavior includes player model selection, administrator restrictions, and forced models that do not depend on cookies. That makes it useful when a server wants a menu-based choice or wants to enforce a roster for everyone.

Player choice
Install and load the plugin, then use its in-game selection interface as described by the version you downloaded. Verify the chat trigger or menu command from that release instead of assuming that a trigger from an older build still applies. If the menu does not appear, check plugin status, command restrictions, and the server log before testing custom models.
Forced models and permissions
Use the plugin’s administrator settings to restrict who can choose and to force a model where required. Test three accounts separately:

- A regular player who should be allowed to choose.
- A regular player who should be denied or forced.
This verifies the policy you intended rather than merely proving that the menu opens for an administrator.
Campaign-size behavior
The plugin’s documented roster support differs by game version: it supports eight survivors in L4D2 campaigns and four in L4D1 campaigns. Check the active game and campaign when diagnosing missing menu entries. A configuration that appears correct in an L4D2 campaign should not be treated as evidence that the same roster is available in L4D1.

Adding custom survivor models
Custom models are a separate compatibility layer. The available documentation warns that most L4D2 Workshop models used with Survivor Chat Select 2 must be recompiled first. Downloading a model and placing its files on the server is therefore not enough by itself.
A reliable custom-model workflow
- Prove that the plugin works with a stock survivor.
- Confirm that every client who will see the model has the required Workshop or server files.
- Follow the model author’s current recompilation requirements for L4D2 and for the specific plugin.
- Install the recompiled output exactly where the author specifies.
- Test with one player on one map before adding additional models.
- Check first-person view, third-person view, bot replacement, death/respawn, and map transitions.
If a custom model is invisible, uses the wrong skeleton, crashes a client, or reverts to a stock survivor, remove that model from the test and return to the known-good stock model. Do not infer that the plugin itself is broken until the recompiled asset has passed a separate test.

“Unknown command: sm_setmodel”
- Confirm that the
.smxfile is in the active SourceMod plugins directory. - List loaded plugins and check for a load error.
- Read the startup log for a missing dependency or invalid binary.
- Make sure you are testing the same server instance where the file was uploaded.
The plugin source will not compile
The Set Survivor Models source is associated with an older release, and a report says it may no longer compile on newer or beta SourceMod branches. Treat that as a compatibility issue. Look for a maintained build or use Survivor Chat Select 2 if its current release supports your server. Do not present an old compiled binary as compatible merely because it loads on one test machine.
The command exists but access is denied
sm_setmodel requires the CHEATS flag. Check the account’s admin entry, reload the admin cache, and test again. If you intend to let players select themselves, configure the plugin’s self-selection cvar or use Survivor Chat Select 2’s player-choice permissions instead.

The model changes for one player but not another
Check the target syntax, permissions, bot status, and whether another plugin is applying a model after your command. Test two human players with stock models, then repeat after a respawn and map change. This isolates target parsing from lifecycle resets.
The model works in one campaign but not another
Confirm whether you changed from an L4D2 campaign to an L4D1 campaign. Survivor Chat Select 2 documents different roster sizes for those games. Also check whether the campaign or another server plugin applies its own survivor restrictions.

Return to the stock model, then validate the custom asset’s required recompilation and client distribution. Most L4D2 Workshop models need that extra preparation for Survivor Chat Select 2; a successful stock-model test does not validate an unrecompiled Workshop model.
Which approach fits your server?
Choose Set Survivor Models when
- You want a simple administrator command.
- You can use the required CHEATS flag safely.
- You have confirmed that the old plugin build compiles and loads on your SourceMod version.
Choose Survivor Chat Select 2 when
- You want an in-game player menu.
- You need administrator restrictions or forced models.
- You are prepared to recompile many Workshop models for compatibility.
- You operate both L4D2 and L4D1 campaigns and need to account for their different survivor counts.
Do not choose an unverified collection solely by name
A general SourceMod plugin collection may contain useful tools, but the available description does not verify that the Jackzmc sourcemod-plugins collection includes a model-assignment plugin. Inspect the current repository and documentation before planning around it.
Recommended rollout checklist
- Back up the server and record the SourceMod version.
- Install one model plugin only.
- Confirm it appears as loaded in the plugin list.
- Test a stock survivor with one administrator account.
- Verify the CHEATS permission for
sm_setmodel, or verify the player-menu permissions for Survivor Chat Select 2. - Test respawn, round restart, campaign transition, and a second player.
- Add custom models one at a time, recompiling them when the plugin requires it.
- Document the working plugin version, cvars, admin flags, and model files so an update can be rolled back.
The key decision is not the command syntax; it is compatibility. Vanilla L4D2 cannot provide this assignment, Set Survivor Models may be too old for a current SourceMod branch, and Survivor Chat Select 2 may require model recompilation. Validate the exact plugin build on your server before promising players a permanent character assignment.
