Leave some families unassigned when you need labor for construction or ox guidance.
Assign or reassign a family
- Select the workplace or burgage plot that currently contains the family.
- Open its People controls and find the family in the list.
- Use the reassignment control to send that family to the desired workplace. To free the family for construction, remove its workplace assignment.
- Check the assigned and unassigned family counts in the top bar. If the destination does not show the workers you expect, return to its People controls and verify the assignment.
The People tab lists a building’s families and lets you manually reassign specific families to other jobs, according to the Manor Lords Official Wiki’s Family page. The exact icons or click sequence can vary by game build, so follow the controls currently shown in your interface.
When to leave families unassigned
An unassigned family is available for construction; the official beginner guide also identifies guiding oxen as a task for unassigned families. If you assign every family to a workplace, you may have no available family labor for building work. Keep an unassigned reserve while construction or timber transport is a priority, then assign those families when you need more workplace labor.
Why a burgage plot family may not be assignable
Before trying to move residents from a burgage plot, check whether the plot has a backyard extension. Some level-two extensions make the residents artisans, locking them to that work and preventing assignment elsewhere. The official Burgage plot page describes these restrictions.

Changing a family’s job is different from changing its home: the official Family page says families cannot be moved between burgage plots.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Ludo Guide reports that Tab opens a building overview and that E and Q add or remove assigned families. These are third-party, version-sensitive instructions, not an official control reference. Check the current in-game controls or interface before relying on them.

Version note
Manor Lords is in Early Access, and its official wiki warns that information may be incomplete or change as development continues. If a control does not match these steps, use the People controls visible in your current build.
