Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNo single at-home test proves that a rare Pokémon card is genuine. The safest approach is a documented, non-destructive review of the card’s identity, print and construction, holder (if any), and transaction context, followed by an independent evaluation when the value or uncertainty justifies it. A bright-light check can reveal a warning sign, but it is not a certificate of authenticity.
What authentication can—and cannot—tell you
Authentication asks whether the physical card is a genuine Pokémon product rather than a counterfeit. That question is separate from condition grading, market value, and tournament legality. A genuine card can still be trimmed, recolored, restored, printed on altered stock, or otherwise changed. Conversely, a card can look clean enough to a casual buyer while still requiring specialist examination.

Pokémon Support advises holding a suspected card up to a bright light because counterfeit cards are often easy to see through. The wording is important: this is a useful screening clue, not a definitive test. There is no official consumer checklist that lets an untrained buyer certify every rare card at home across all eras, languages, finishes, and promotional releases.

Protect the card while you investigate. Do not bend it, peel layers, scrape ink, tear an edge, or use any test that leaves a mark. A destructive experiment can reduce the card’s value and still fail to answer whether it was altered before you received it.
Step 1: Define exactly what is being offered
Before judging authenticity, write down the card’s identity. A seller’s description can be incomplete or use an informal name, and several releases may share similar artwork. Record:
- Pokémon name and card number.
- Set or expansion name.
- Language.
- Finish, such as a standard, holo, reverse-holo, or other visible treatment.
- Edition, promotional designation, or special release wording shown on the card.
- Whether the card is raw (unencapsulated) or in a graded holder.
Compare those details with official Pokémon product and card images and with a clear photograph of a known genuine example. Pokémon Support specifically recommends becoming familiar with official product images. That advice helps you detect a mismatch in identity or layout, but it is not a complete diagnostic guide for every printing variation.
Ask for high-resolution images of the complete front and back, both long edges, both short edges, and all corners. For a slabbed card, request the entire holder and label, including the certification number. Avoid making a decision from a cropped front image that hides the border, edge or back.
Step 2: Check the transaction before you inspect the card
Authentication risk is partly a transaction problem. A genuine card can still be misrepresented, swapped after a certification lookup, or sold under pressure before you can inspect it. Treat the following as reasons to slow down:
- The seller will not provide useful front, back and edge photographs.
- You are urged to pay immediately or discouraged from obtaining an independent opinion.
- The seller cannot explain where the card came from or gives inconsistent answers.
- The listing uses a stock image instead of photographs of the actual card.
- Return terms are unclear, unusually restrictive, or disappear once payment is sent.
- The price is implausibly low for the claimed rarity and condition.
Pokémon Support warns that sealed booster packs offered dramatically below suggested retail can be a warning sign and notes many reported counterfeit-sale instances at flea markets. That guidance concerns sealed packs; it is not a formula for pricing an individual rare single. A low price for a single may reflect condition, demand, urgency, or an error, so use it as a reason to investigate rather than as proof of a fake.

Step 3: Perform a non-destructive visual review
Use controlled lighting
Work on a clean, uncluttered surface with bright, even light. A bright LED inspection flashlight can help with the screening step, but it is only a light source, not an authenticator. Handle the card by its edges and keep it in the same orientation as the reference image.
Try the bright-light translucency check
Hold the card up to a bright light without pressing or flexing it. If the card appears unusually see-through, treat that as a warning sign and stop for a second opinion. Do not conclude that every card that transmits some light is counterfeit, or that a card that blocks light is genuine; thickness, lighting, photography and construction can affect what you see.
Inspect front, back and edges
Look for differences between the offered card and a trusted reference in overall layout, lettering, symbols, borders, color balance, alignment, surface finish and edge appearance. Examine the back as carefully as the front. A counterfeit may imitate the artwork while missing details elsewhere, but a casual visual comparison cannot reliably diagnose every printing, language or finish variation.
Use magnification only to observe; do not scrape or lift a surface layer. Note any suspected mismatch in photographs and written notes so a shop or authenticator can evaluate the same feature.
Inspect the surface without trying to correct it
Check whether the surface shows unusual gloss, texture, discoloration, lifting, scratches, dents or areas that appear to have been recolored. These observations identify questions for an expert. They do not establish that a card was doctored, because lighting and ordinary wear can create similar appearances.

Step 4: Understand alteration risks in graded and raw cards
Professional grading begins with an authenticity and alteration review. PSA states that its graders examine a card for authenticity and possible doctoring, including recoloring or trimming, before assigning a grade to a card that passes authentication.
PSA’s grading standards discuss several categories that can affect the outcome:
- Trimming: changing an edge or dimensions after production.
- Recoloring: adding color to hide whitening, wear or another defect.
- Restoration: repairing or modifying a card in a way that changes its original state.
- Altered stock: changing the card material or structure.
- Questionable authenticity: evidence that the item may not be a genuine product.
Those categories are reasons to obtain expertise, not a promise that a buyer can identify every alteration by eye. A card may be genuine yet receive no numerical grade because of an alteration, and a card that looks acceptable in a photograph may require examination under professional equipment.
Step 5: Verify a graded holder correctly
If the card is in a PSA holder, record the certification number and use PSA’s official certification-verification route. Check that the online record’s Pokémon, set, card number, language or variety, grade and other listed details match the physical card and label.
Then compare the actual holder with the record. Look for a label that belongs to the same card, a holder that has not been opened or replaced, and photographs that show the item offered rather than a different example. PSA’s terms caution that database verification does not eliminate risk or guarantee that the physical item offered is the genuine authenticated item. A number can be copied, and an authentic holder can be paired with a different card.
For a raw card, there is no certification record to check. The evidence is therefore the card itself, its identity details, the seller’s documentation and an independent inspection when warranted.

Raw card versus encapsulated card: compare the evidence
| Question | Raw card | Professionally encapsulated card |
|---|---|---|
| What can you inspect directly? | Front, back, edges and surface, subject to the seller’s photographs and your access to the card. | The label, holder and visible card; some edges or surfaces may be harder to view through the plastic. |
| What record is available? | Usually the seller’s description, photographs and any provenance they provide. | A certification record, if the grading company offers one, plus the physical label and holder. |
| What does the record prove? | Nothing by itself; identity must be checked against the actual card. | A lookup can confirm details associated with a number, but it does not by itself prove that the physical card and holder are the genuine item in the transaction. |
| What risks remain? | Counterfeiting, misidentification, undisclosed alteration and condition misrepresentation. | Copied numbers, holder or label substitution, tampering, and misunderstanding a grade as a guarantee of value or authenticity. |
Step 6: Build an evidence packet before asking for help
Keep the investigation reproducible. Save the original listing, seller messages, payment terms, photographs, certification lookup result (if applicable), and your own notes. Add a short identity record with the card name, set, number, language, finish and stated edition.

When photographing, use diffuse light that shows the surface without glare. Include a ruler only for documentation, not as a do-it-yourself trimming test. Photograph both sides, every edge and the holder label in the same session. Do not remove a card from a sealed holder merely to obtain a better picture.
Document the transaction context as well: asking price, date, location or marketplace, seller’s explanation of provenance, return window and any pressure to complete the sale. This information helps an evaluator distinguish a simple cataloging mistake from a deliberate misrepresentation.
Step 7: Escalate to an independent specialist
Use a local trading-card shop for an initial opinion
Pokémon Support recommends asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a card that may be counterfeit. Choose a shop that handles Pokémon cards regularly and ask what the evaluation covers. A knowledgeable shop can compare the card with known examples and tell you whether paid authentication or grading is justified.
Do not treat an informal shop opinion as an absolute guarantee. Ask whether the person has examined the physical card, whether the opinion is written, and whether the shop has any conflict of interest in buying the card from you.

Use a professional authentication and grading service for material value
For an expensive card, a disputed purchase, an estate or inheritance, or a sale where the buyer needs independent documentation, consider a professional service such as PSA. PSA’s process separates authenticity and alteration review from condition grading. Confirm the provider’s current submission requirements, service level, fees and turnaround on its live service page before sending anything; these details can change.

Pack and ship the card exactly as the service instructs. Keep copies of the submission form, declared value, photographs and tracking information. A professional result answers the scope of that service at the time of examination; it does not guarantee future market value or eliminate every transaction risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between informal review and paid authentication
| Situation | Practical next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low-value card with clear identity and no warning signs | Complete the non-destructive checks and retain the seller’s documentation. | The cost and delay of a paid service may exceed the card’s practical value. |
| Unclear identity, unusual finish or conflicting photographs | Pause the purchase and ask a specialist trading-card shop to examine the card. | You need an independent comparison before committing money. |
| High-value raw card or important sale | Obtain a documented professional authentication or grading service. | A formal evaluation provides stronger evidence than a seller’s assurance. |
| Graded card whose lookup does not match the physical item | Do not buy or ship it onward; contact the grading company and the seller. | A mismatch can indicate a listing error, swapped card, copied number or holder problem. |
| Suspected alteration after a card appears genuine | Ask specifically about trimming, recoloring, restoration and altered stock. | Authenticity and condition outcomes are separate, and alteration can prevent a numerical grade. |
Authentication, grade, value and tournament legality are different
Authenticity
This is the question “Is this a genuine Pokémon card?” It concerns the physical item, not merely a listing, photograph or database entry.
Condition grade
A grade describes condition after the service reviews authenticity and possible doctoring. A genuine card can be altered or otherwise unsuitable for a numerical grade.
Market value
Value depends on identity, rarity, condition, demand, language, edition and the credibility of the transaction. Neither a bright-light result nor a certification lookup supplies a complete valuation.
Tournament usability
The Play! Pokémon handbook says cards used in sanctioned play should remain much as obtained and disallows marked cards and post-production alterations. Tournament rules address playability and competitive fairness; they are not a complete collector-market authentication standard. A card can be genuine but ineligible for sanctioned play, or playable while still requiring specialist review for a high-value sale.
What to do when a card may be counterfeit
- Stop handling experiments. Put the card down without bending, peeling, scraping or tearing it.
- Preserve evidence. Save the listing, messages, photographs, receipt and payment record.
- Record identity details. Note the Pokémon, set, number, language, finish and claimed edition.
- Request a second opinion. Ask a specialist trading-card shop to examine the physical card.
- Separate the dispute from the diagnosis. Follow the marketplace or payment provider’s return and fraud process while the card is being evaluated.
- Do not resell it as genuine. Until the issue is resolved, do not pass the card to another collector with an unqualified authenticity claim.
If the card is in a holder, keep the holder intact while contacting the grading company and seller. If a professional service reports questionable authenticity or alteration, retain the report and follow the relevant return, marketplace and payment procedures.
Common mistakes that create false confidence
- Relying on one visual clue: translucency, color or a surface impression can justify escalation but cannot certify a card.
- Treating a certification number as ownership of the evidence: the number must match the physical card and holder, and PSA says the lookup alone does not eliminate risk.
- Assuming a grade proves everything: grading follows an authenticity and alteration review but does not guarantee value, provenance or tournament legality.
- Using sealed-pack advice to price a single: Pokémon Support’s low-price warning is specifically about sealed booster packs.
- Comparing only the front: identity and construction clues may appear on the back, edges or holder.
- Letting urgency replace verification: a rare-card opportunity is not safer because a seller says someone else is waiting.
- Damaging the card to test it: destructive checks can lower value and still produce an uncertain result.
A buyer’s and seller’s final checklist
Before buying
- Have you recorded the exact card identity, language, finish and edition?
- Do you have clear photographs of both sides, all edges and the actual holder, if any?
- Have you compared the card with official product images and a known genuine example?
- Have you performed the bright-light check without flexing or damaging the card?
- Does the price and seller behavior give you time for an independent review?
- If graded, does the certification record match the physical card, label and holder?
- Do the payment and return terms allow inspection after delivery?
Before selling
- Have you photographed the exact card and recorded its identity before listing?
- Have you disclosed visible wear, alterations, uncertainty or an unresolved certification mismatch?
- Can you provide provenance without overstating what it proves?
- Would a local specialist or professional service reduce a dispute over a high-value card?
- Are you describing authenticity, grade, value and tournament status as separate claims?
When you should walk away
Do not complete the transaction when the seller refuses reasonable photographs, blocks independent inspection, changes the item or price at the last moment, or cannot explain a mismatch between the card and a certification record. A rare card will not become safer because it is difficult to replace. If the evidence remains contradictory after a specialist review, preserve your records and decline the deal.

Use bright light and careful comparison to screen for warning signs, not to issue a verdict. Establish the exact card identity, inspect the front, back, edges and holder without causing damage, and evaluate the seller’s transparency and transaction terms. For meaningful value or unresolved doubt, obtain an independent shop evaluation or professional authentication. Keep authenticity, alteration, grade, value and tournament legality as separate questions throughout the purchase or sale.
