How to Use BackerKit to Back a Crowdfunded Tabletop RPG

How do I use BackerKit to back a crowdfunded tabletop RPG? You normally pledge through the campaign first, then use a BackerKit survey to confirm your reward choices, shipping address, optional add-ons and any shipping, tax or other balance the creator has configured. The survey is a fulfillment form, not a normal checkout for a finished game.

Your original pledge normally covers the core reward already selected. You do not pay a second time merely because a survey arrives, although the survey can legitimately request shipping or tax that was excluded from the campaign, charge for optional add-ons, or collect a failed pledge balance. Follow the campaign deadline and creator updates because BackerKit cannot tell you when an unfinished tabletop RPG will ship.

What BackerKit is doing in a tabletop RPG campaign

BackerKit is often used as a pledge manager after a crowdfunding campaign. BackerKit Help explains that when you support a project on BackerKit or Kickstarter, “you’re not purchasing a finished product off a shelf.” The creator may still be finalizing writing, editing, art, printing, manufacturing and fulfillment. Your pledge helps fund that work; the survey gathers the information needed to deliver the eventual rewards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BackerKit’s survey can ask for your current country and address, a choice among reward variants, answers to project questions, optional add-ons and payment for charges the creator has enabled. A survey invitation does not prove that the rulebook or any other reward is complete, packed or about to leave a warehouse. Production and shipping remain the creator’s responsibility, sometimes with a fulfillment partner. For project-specific status, use the campaign page and the creator’s updates rather than treating the survey email as a dispatch notice. See BackerKit’s explanation of surveys.

What to check before you open the survey

Keep the campaign page, your pledge confirmation and the latest creator update available. The title of a reward can be less informative than its full contents, and a tabletop RPG campaign may offer physical, digital or special-edition rewards in different combinations.

  • Identify your pledge level. Confirm the tier you selected and what the creator says it contains. Do not assume every tier includes a printed core rulebook, a PDF, dice, accessories or a special edition.
  • Read the creator’s fulfillment language. Note the stated delivery estimate, countries served and any warning that shipping or tax will be collected later. Estimates can change as production progresses.
  • Check whether your original payment succeeded. A failed pledge can appear as a balance in the survey, while a successful pledge should not be charged again for the same core reward.
  • Decide whether you actually want add-ons. Add-ons are optional purchases when the project offers them. They can include a different format, accessory, apparel item or variant, but an unnamed campaign should not be assumed to offer any particular product.
  • Prepare the address that should receive the package. Use the destination where you expect to be able to accept the shipment during the creator’s stated fulfillment window, and check the project’s country restrictions.

How to complete a BackerKit survey

BackerKit says an account is not required to respond to a survey. Start with the link in the creator’s email and work through the project’s own questions in the order shown. The labels can vary between campaigns, but the practical sequence is consistent.

  1. Open the survey link from the creator. Use the campaign email or the link supplied in an official update. If the page does not recognize you, compare the email address and pledge details with your confirmation before creating a new account or contacting the creator.
  2. Select your country or destination. The country selection can control which address fields, shipping options and available variants appear. Choose the country where the reward should be delivered, not necessarily the country in which you made the pledge.
  3. Answer the project questions. A creator may ask for information needed to fulfill a reward. Provide exactly what the survey requests and check whether an answer can be changed later.
  4. Review the displayed pledge and reward level. Verify that the survey shows the tier you backed and the items associated with it. If the listed reward does not match your confirmation, stop before paying and ask the creator for clarification.
  5. Choose variants where offered. The survey may ask you to select a size, color, design, version or similar option. Make sure the selection matches the reward description and your intended format. A variant choice is not the same as buying an extra item.
  6. Add optional extras only if you want them. Select an add-on to purchase it; leave it unselected if you do not want the additional cost. Read the quantity and variant details carefully, especially when a campaign has both digital and physical versions.
  7. Enter and proofread the shipping address. Check the recipient name, street, unit or apartment, locality, postal code, region and country. A small address error can delay or misdirect an international parcel. If the project asks for a phone number or customs information, provide it in the requested format.
  8. Inspect every line of the order and any payment screen. Confirm the original pledge, shipping, tax, add-ons and any balance from a failed payment. Payment details are used for additional purchases or charges shown by the project; the survey itself is not a second charge for the original reward.
  9. Submit the survey and save the confirmation. Keep the confirmation email or screenshot and note the creator’s deadline. BackerKit says you can return to make changes until the creator locks responses, so do not wait until the final hours if your address or choices may change.

BackerKit’s step-by-step instructions are in How do I fill out my survey?. The project’s own instructions take priority when they add a deadline or a question that is specific to that campaign.

Do you have to pay again when you fill out a BackerKit survey?

Not for the core reward if your original pledge payment was successful. BackerKit’s help page states, “No, your original pledge payment has already been collected.” That answer refers to the pledge itself, not every amount that might appear in the survey.

What you see in the survey Why it can appear What to do
Original pledge or included reward It records what you backed; it should not be a second charge for the same successful pledge. Compare it with your pledge confirmation and check that the payment succeeded.
Shipping The creator may have excluded shipping from the campaign or chosen to collect it later. Check the destination, the rate and whether the project says shipping is due now or later.
Tax Tax may not have been included in the original campaign total and can be calculated for your destination. Review the tax line before confirming and keep the receipt.
Optional add-on You selected an extra item beyond the reward tier. Remove it if you do not want the additional purchase.
Outstanding pledge balance The original payment failed or was not fully collected. Check the original payment status and follow the survey’s instructions to reinstate the pledge.

BackerKit’s survey guidance explains these distinctions. Before submitting, expand or review the complete order rather than relying on a headline total. If a charge is unexpected, do not guess: compare it with the campaign’s shipping and tax explanation and contact the creator if the line still cannot be reconciled.

How shipping charges and methods work

There is no universal BackerKit shipping price for tabletop RPGs. The creator configures the project’s shipping method and rates, and the amount can depend on destination, package weight, reward composition and whether add-ons are included. BackerKit documents several approaches in Options for Charging Shipping Fees in BackerKit Pledge Manager.

Creator’s shipping approach How it affects your survey
Whole-order, weight-based shipping The charge is calculated from the combined weight of the pledge rewards and selected add-ons.
Separate shipping for pledge rewards and add-ons The campaign can calculate the reward shipment and add-on shipment separately, so adding an extra item can create a distinct shipping amount.
Shipping collected later The creator can defer the shipping charge instead of including it in the original campaign payment; the survey or a later project instruction will identify when it is due.

Before confirming, verify four things: the destination country, the displayed rate, whether shipping is being collected now or later, and any explanation the creator supplied for regional or international fulfillment. A lower pledge price does not necessarily mean a lower delivered cost if shipping and tax are separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add-ons, variants and Kickstarter pledges

Add-ons are extras offered outside the contents of a pledge tier. They are optional, and the survey should show the price and any required variant choice before you confirm. A campaign might use add-ons for a physical accessory, apparel, an alternate version or another format, but only the creator’s campaign page establishes which items exist.

For Kickstarter campaigns that use BackerKit, BackerKit says campaign add-ons are imported after the campaign ends and mapped to matching survey add-ons. You may therefore be asked to confirm a selection such as size, color or design even though you made the original pledge on Kickstarter. Read the mapped item name and variant instead of assuming that a similarly named option is identical. Details are in Does BackerKit support add-ons offered on Kickstarter?.

BackerKit reports that creators offering add-ons can raise an average of 15–20% in additional funds from add-on sales alone; the page does not state a publication year. A separate BackerKit help article, last updated December 16, 2024, reports an average 16% additional fundraising when creators offer add-ons on BackerKit after already offering them on Kickstarter. Both figures describe platform-reported creator fundraising, not a guaranteed saving, charge or outcome for an individual backer. See What are Add-On items? and the Kickstarter add-on guidance.

How to compare pledge levels or editions

If a tabletop RPG campaign offers several tiers, compare the options using the information on that campaign rather than a generic assumption about what an RPG reward contains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison question What to verify
What exactly is included? Check whether the tier names a physical core rulebook, digital files, a special edition or other stated rewards. Confirm quantities and formats.
What is the delivered total? Add the original pledge, any outstanding balance, shipping, tax and the price of optional add-ons you choose.
Where will it ship? Confirm that the creator serves your destination and note any regional fulfillment conditions.
When is delivery expected? Read the creator’s current estimate and updates. A survey invitation is not a shipping date.

For a physical tabletop RPG core rulebook, check the tier first before buying a copy elsewhere. The game and edition in this assignment are unspecified, so a separate purchase could duplicate a reward you already backed or could be a different edition entirely. If the campaign promises only digital files, a printed book would be an additional purchase; if it already includes a printed book, buying another copy may be unnecessary.

When will your BackerKit reward ship?

BackerKit cannot provide a universal delivery date. A survey is sent when the creator needs fulfillment information, which can happen while writing, art, manufacturing or logistics are still in progress. The creator’s updates are the authoritative source for schedule changes, production milestones, shipping waves and delays.

Use this sequence to interpret timing:

  1. Look at the campaign’s stated estimate. Treat it as the creator’s projection for the relevant reward, region and format, not a guarantee.
  2. Read the newest creator update. Check for changes to files, printing, manufacturing, customs or fulfillment partners.
  3. Complete the survey by its deadline. An unsubmitted or late survey can prevent the creator from using your address or choices in the planned fulfillment batch.
  4. Watch for a separate dispatch notice. A tracking email or creator announcement, rather than the survey invitation, is the useful signal that a parcel has entered shipping.
  5. Contact the creator for a project-specific problem. BackerKit hosts the survey workflow, but the creator controls production status and the promised reward.

Changes, locked surveys and common problems

You need to change your address or reward choice

Return through the survey link and edit the response while the project still accepts changes. BackerKit says changes are available until the creator locks survey responses. After the lock, use the creator’s support contact; do not assume that editing an account profile will change an address already exported for fulfillment.

The survey shows a charge you did not expect

Separate the total into original pledge, shipping, tax, add-ons and any failed-payment balance. Remove unwanted extras, compare the shipping explanation with your destination and check whether the initial pledge succeeded. If the remaining line cannot be explained by the campaign or the displayed survey details, ask the creator before submitting payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your original payment failed

A failed pledge may need to be reinstated in the survey. Follow the payment instructions and confirm that the campaign still shows your intended reward level. Do not create a second pledge unless the creator specifically directs you to do so.

You did not receive a survey

Check the campaign’s latest update, spam or promotions folders and the email address used for the pledge. Some projects have not opened their surveys yet. Contact the creator if the announced survey window has passed or your pledge is missing; BackerKit’s general FAQ explains the pledge-manager role in Frequently Asked Questions.

The reward is late

Review the newest creator update before assuming the survey caused a delay. Crowdfunding schedules can move during production or fulfillment. Ask the creator for the status of your reward and destination; the survey itself does not establish that manufacturing is complete.

A practical final checklist

  • Open the survey from the creator’s official email or update.
  • Choose the correct delivery country.
  • Confirm the pledge tier and every included format.
  • Select only the variants and add-ons you actually want.
  • Enter a complete, current shipping address.
  • Review pledge, shipping, tax, add-ons and any failed-payment balance separately.
  • Pay only the additional amounts the survey clearly displays and you intend to owe.
  • Submit before the creator’s deadline and save the confirmation.
  • Keep monitoring creator updates for production and shipping news.

The essential distinction is simple: your pledge supports an unfinished project, while the BackerKit survey supplies the creator with the choices, address and additional fulfillment payment needed to send the eventual reward. Complete it accurately and on time, but use the campaign’s own updates—not the existence of the survey—to judge when your tabletop RPG will ship.
