The reliable approach is to maintain a dedicated r2modman profile for the server, stop the server, back up its BepInEx files, configurations and saves, update only compatible packages, copy the resulting files into the server’s BepInEx tree, then restart and inspect the logs. You can automate that sequence with a scheduler, container entrypoint or hosting-panel task, but the updater still needs version checks, backups, a concurrency lock and a rollback path.

What “auto-update” means for a V Rising server
r2modman can browse Thunderstore packages, install them, manage profiles and identify available updates. Its documented update workflow is designed for a desktop mod-management session. It is not a guarantee that a headless V Rising server process will discover, download and safely apply updates by itself.

For a dedicated server, “auto-update” should mean an operational pipeline with controlled downtime:
- A named profile defines the exact packages and versions intended for the server.
- A scheduled job runs only when the server is stopped, creates a dated rollback copy, and updates the profile or downloaded package set.
- Only packages marked for server use, or for both client and server, are deployed to the server.
- The job copies plugin and configuration files into the existing server BepInEx tree, never into the save-data location.
- The server starts again, BepInEx is allowed to generate or validate files, and logs are checked before players are admitted.
- A matching client profile is distributed when players need the same package versions or dependencies.
This distinction matters because a desktop profile manager and an unattended service have different failure modes. A person can read a compatibility warning and cancel. A timer that blindly copies every newly published file can take a server offline, load a client-only plugin, or leave players on incompatible versions.

Use Thunderstore’s compatibility categories before updating
The V Rising catalog separates packages into Client, Server and Tools categories. Treat those labels as your first filter, not as optional metadata.
- Server: eligible for the dedicated server profile when the package’s own requirements are satisfied.
- Client: intended for a player’s local game installation; copying it to a server can prevent a clean startup or provide no useful function.
- Tools: utilities that may support installation or administration rather than runtime server loading; inspect the package description before deployment.
- Client and server: packages that require coordinated installation on both sides. The exact version and dependency set must match where the package requires it.
Start with BepInExPack V Rising as the loader foundation required by the package set you are using. On first boot, BepInEx can take time to generate its directories and configuration files. Do not assume that an apparently empty tree is ready for replacement while that first generation is still running.

Choose a profile layout that can be rolled back
Create a dedicated server profile
In r2modman, create a profile with a name that clearly identifies its purpose, such as V Rising - Dedicated Server. Install the exact server package set into that profile. Do not use a personal client profile as the deployment source: client-only additions, test packages and local configuration changes can be copied accidentally.
Record the profile’s package names, versions and dependencies whenever you make a change. A version record can be a text export, an administrator note or the package manifest produced by your management workflow. The useful property is that it lets you reconstruct the last known-good state instead of relying on memory.

Maintain a separate client profile
Players may need a second profile containing client-only packages plus any packages that must exist on both sides. Keep this profile separate from the server profile, then publish the matching versions to players after a server update. Separating the profiles prevents a client convenience mod from being deployed to the dedicated host.
Review dependency changes, not just direct updates
An update can alter a package’s dependencies or introduce a new required version. Review the complete proposed change set before applying it. A direct package that appears harmless can still fail if its loader, library or companion package is older than the version it expects.
Safe update procedure
Use this sequence for a one-time update and as the specification for any scheduled automation.
- Announce a maintenance window. Tell players when the server will stop and when compatibility testing will finish. A mod update necessarily creates at least one restart window.
- Confirm the game and loader state. Check the current V Rising build, BepInEx installation and the package categories. If the game has just received a patch, pause automatic deployment until BepInEx and critical mods are confirmed compatible with that build.
- Stop the server completely. Wait for the process to exit and for the host panel, service manager or container to report a stopped state. Do not replace files while the server is still writing plugins, configuration or saves.
- Create a dated rollback set. Copy the server’s BepInEx directory, configuration files and save data to storage separate from the live tree. Keep the package/version record with that copy. A dated folder makes it possible to identify exactly which state to restore.
- Update the server profile. In r2modman, review available updates and apply only packages tagged for server use or for both client and server. Read dependency changes and package notes before confirming.
- Stage the resulting files. Let the profile manager finish downloading and resolving packages before copying anything to the host. Staging first gives you a coherent set rather than a half-updated live directory.
- Deploy to the server’s BepInEx tree. Use the host’s supported file-transfer method to copy the plugin and configuration files. Merge the intended BepInEx content; do not replace save data with the profile directory and do not treat a generic “copy all files” operation as a backup.
- Start the server and wait for initialization. On a first boot after installing or rebuilding BepInEx, allow time for its directories and files to be generated or validated. Avoid interrupting the process because the files do not appear immediately.
- Inspect the startup log. Look for loader errors, missing dependencies, version conflicts and plugin exceptions. Keep the server closed to players until the log shows a clean load for the packages you changed.
- Run a controlled connection test. Join with an administrator or test client using the matching client profile. Check the features affected by the update, then open the server to the wider player group.
- Retain the rollback copy. Keep it until at least one complete session has finished without mod-related errors. After that, archive or rotate it according to your storage policy rather than deleting it immediately.
How to automate the sequence
Automation should orchestrate the proven manual steps; it should not bypass them. The exact command, service name and filesystem path depend on whether the server runs on Linux, Windows, a container or a hosting panel, and no universal V Rising updater command is established.
Scheduled job on a self-hosted Linux server
A systemd timer or another scheduler can invoke an update script during a maintenance window. The script should:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Acquire an exclusive lock so a second timer invocation exits instead of running concurrently.
- Verify that the server process is running under the expected service or container identity.
- Request a clean stop and wait until the process has fully exited.
- Create a dated archive of BepInEx, configuration and save data, and write the current package/version manifest beside it.
- Run the profile update or consume a pre-staged package set, rejecting packages that are not server-compatible.
- Copy only the staged plugin and configuration content into the server’s BepInEx tree.
- Start the service, wait for the startup condition used by your host, and record the log output.
- Exit with a failure status if the process does not start or if required loader/dependency checks fail, leaving the rollback copy intact.
Use the same logic with Windows Task Scheduler on a Windows host. Configure the task to run under an account that has access to the server files, set a maintenance window, and enable the scheduler’s “do not start a new instance while one is running” behavior or enforce the equivalent lock in the script.
Container or hosting-panel task
A Docker entrypoint or hosting-panel task can perform the same stop-backup-deploy-start cycle. Make sure the task can reach the persistent volume containing the server’s BepInEx tree, configuration and saves. A container restart by itself is not an update strategy: it must use a known profile or staged package set and retain a rollback copy outside the disposable container layer.
Managed hosting is useful when you need built-in scheduled jobs, backups and restart controls but do not want to maintain the operating system or service manager. Confirm that the provider exposes logs, lets you choose the deployment files and allows you to restore a dated backup. A panel that only offers “update all” without version history does not provide the safeguards required for unattended mod updates.
Manual, scripted and managed approaches compared
| Approach | Version and rollback control | Scheduled jobs | Log access | Downtime | Operator workload |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual profile and copy | Highest visibility: you choose each package and keep the rollback copy yourself. | Performed when an administrator starts the update. | Direct access to the host and BepInEx startup log. | One deliberate stop/start window per update. | Requires hands-on maintenance and a documented checklist. |
| Scripted self-hosted deployment | Precisely reproducible when the script stages versions and archives each run. | Systemd timer, Windows Task Scheduler or an equivalent scheduler can run the pipeline. | Script output and server logs can be retained with each run. | Still includes the stop, file replacement and restart interval. | Requires maintaining the script, lock, credentials and host environment. |
| Managed hosting | Depends on the panel’s profile, backup and restore controls; verify these before relying on automation. | Often available as a hosting-panel task, subject to the provider’s features. | Use the provider’s console and downloadable server logs. | Controlled by the panel’s stop/restart behavior and maintenance window. | Less operating-system administration, but you remain responsible for package compatibility and validation. |
Keep server and client mods synchronized
After the server profile is updated and passes its startup check, compare the resulting package/version list with the client profile. Give players the exact versions for packages that require installation on both sides, along with any changed dependencies. Do not assume that a client can connect merely because the server process is online.
A useful release note for players lists the profile name, package versions that changed, the first playable time and whether a client restart or profile import is required. If a package is server-only, do not instruct players to install it locally. If a package is client-only, do not copy it into the server BepInEx tree.

When a player reports a connection or feature problem, first compare the package and dependency versions against the server manifest. This is faster and safer than asking everyone to reinstall an unverified “latest” collection.

Pause after a V Rising patch
A game patch can invalidate a previously working BepInEx and mod combination. Suspend the scheduler after a V Rising update and wait for the loader and critical packages to be confirmed compatible. Keeping the timer active during that uncertainty turns an external game change into an unattended production change.

Recognize a failed deployment
- The server process exits during startup or repeatedly restarts.
- The BepInEx log reports a loader exception, missing dependency or incompatible assembly.
- Players with the new client profile cannot connect, while the prior profile worked.
- A plugin’s feature fails immediately after a package or dependency update.
Restore the last known-good state
- Stop the server and prevent the scheduler from starting another update.
- Preserve the failed deployment’s log for diagnosis.
- Restore the dated BepInEx directory and configuration files from the last known-good rollback set.
- Restore save data only if the failure or an interrupted process damaged it; otherwise preserve the newest valid save according to your backup policy.
- Start the server, wait for BepInEx initialization and verify the restored package versions in the log.
- Tell players to return to the matching client profile, then leave automatic updates paused until the incompatibility is understood.
Do not solve a failed update by copying a client profile wholesale over the server or by deleting the save directory. Those actions can introduce new incompatibilities or destroy progress without addressing the loader problem.
Troubleshooting the common automation failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| A client-only plugin appears in the server files. | The deployment used a mixed client profile or ignored Thunderstore category labels. | Remove the client-only package from the server profile, restore the last clean BepInEx/config backup if necessary, and redeploy the server-only set. |
| The update job starts while the server is still running. | The scheduler checked a command return value but not the actual process exit, or two jobs overlapped. | Add a stop-and-wait condition plus an exclusive lock; do not replace files until the process is fully stopped. |
| BepInEx folders are missing immediately after installation. | The first boot has not finished generating its files. | Start once with the required loader, wait for generation to complete, then inspect the log before staging the next update. |
| The server starts but a plugin fails to load. | A dependency changed, a package is incompatible with the current V Rising build, or the wrong package category was deployed. | Read the loader log, compare the manifest with the prior rollback set, and restore the known-good versions if compatibility is not confirmed. |
| Players cannot connect after a successful server restart. | The client profile has different package or dependency versions. | Distribute the server’s matching version set and have players restart with the dedicated client profile. |
| The host reports a successful copy but the server behaves as before. | Files were copied to the wrong BepInEx tree or into a profile directory that the server does not read. | Identify the active server installation, verify the deployed plugin/configuration timestamps and restart that installation. |
| The same update runs twice. | Overlapping timer executions or a second panel task. | Keep one authoritative scheduler and enforce a lock or “run only once” setting. |
Preflight checklist for every unattended run
- The V Rising build has not changed unexpectedly, or compatibility with the new build is confirmed.
- The server profile contains only server or client-and-server packages.
- Package versions and dependency changes are recorded.
- The server has a dated BepInEx, configuration and save backup.
- The stop operation waits for a fully exited process.
- An exclusive lock prevents concurrent update jobs.
- Deployment targets the live server BepInEx tree, not the save directory or an unrelated profile folder.
- The startup log is retained and checked for loader and dependency errors.
- The matching client profile is ready for players when required.
- The rollback copy will remain available through at least one successful play session.
A practical operating rhythm
For a small community, run the profile-and-copy procedure manually whenever a trusted package update is available. This keeps a person in the approval loop and is usually simpler than debugging a script.
For a frequently updated server, stage packages on a separate administrator machine, review the proposed versions, and let a scheduled job perform only the stop, backup, deployment and restart portions. This limits what an unattended task can change while still removing repetitive file work.
For operators who do not want to maintain a host, choose managed hosting only after confirming scheduled-task support, restart controls, log visibility and dated restore points. In every model, keep the profile manifest and rollback copy under your control. Automation is valuable because it makes a tested procedure repeatable; it is dangerous when it hides which versions were installed or leaves no way back.
