How to Automate Config File Updates With OpenClaw

Automate OpenClaw configuration safely: locate the effective JSON5 file, validate changes with strict dry runs, apply atomic writes, verify values, and handle batches, backups, doctor repairs, and upgrades.

Use OpenClaw’s config CLI rather than editing JSON5 by hand: read a dot-path with openclaw config get, validate a change with config set --strict-json --dry-run, apply it, and read the same path again. Back up openclaw.json before every automated write, keep the file off symlinked paths, and run openclaw doctor after upgrades.

The safe automation model

OpenClaw stores configuration as JSON5 in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. When that file does not exist, OpenClaw uses safe defaults. An automation job should therefore treat the file as managed state, not as an ordinary text file to rewrite with a JSON library.

The supported workflow is deliberately small:

  1. Identify the exact field and read its current value.
  2. Create an independent backup of the current file.
  3. Validate the proposed value with --strict-json --dry-run.
  4. Apply the same command without --dry-run.
  5. Read the field again and stop if the observed value is not the intended value.

For several related changes, use a batch file or a patch file, but still perform a dry run before the real write. This sequence gives a script a clear failure boundary: a validation failure does not alter the file, and a successful write can be checked immediately.

Find the file OpenClaw is actually using

Default location

The default path is ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. The tilde is resolved for the user running the command, so an automation account, service account, and interactive administrator can each have a different configuration. Run the script as the same operating-system user that runs the OpenClaw Gateway unless you have deliberately arranged shared permissions.

Overriding the path

Set OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH when the configuration is outside the default state directory. Your script should calculate the effective path from that variable rather than assuming the home-directory location:

CONFIG_PATH="${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}"

Keep the environment setting consistent for every command in one transaction. Reading the default file and then writing an overridden file is an easy way to validate one configuration and modify another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a symlink for the managed file

OpenClaw writes atomically. Its write operation replaces the configuration path, rather than opening a symlink and writing through to the target. A symlinked openclaw.json can therefore leave the target untouched while replacing the symlink itself. Put the real file at the path OpenClaw manages and use OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH when you need a different location.

Discover a field before changing it

Configuration paths are not self-documenting. Before an agent or script edits a field, use OpenClaw’s config.schema.lookup documentation lookup for that field. It is the intended place to check the field’s type, accepted values, defaults, and related constraints. This is especially important for nested objects and arrays, where a syntactically valid value can still be rejected by the configuration schema.

The CLI addresses nested properties with dot paths. For example, this reads the Gateway port:

openclaw config get gateway.port

Array entries can be addressed with bracket notation such as agents.list[0].id. Because bracket parsing has appeared in third-party command guides and CLI behavior can change, verify the syntax supported by the version installed on the machine with openclaw config --help before placing it in a long-lived deployment script.

openclaw configure remains useful for an operator making an interactive change, but it is not a deterministic substitute for a scripted read, validation, write, and verification cycle.

OpenClaw config commands at a glance

Command Purpose Write behavior
openclaw config get gateway.port Read a value at a dot path Read-only
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json --dry-run Validate a proposed value Does not write openclaw.json
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json Write a validated value Writes atomically
openclaw config unset gateway.port Remove a key and allow its default or absence to apply Writes atomically
openclaw config patch --file FILE --dry-run Validate a patch file Does not write during the dry run
openclaw config set --batch-file FILE --dry-run Validate multiple changes from a batch file Does not write during the dry run; batch input is limited to 8 MiB

The value passed to config set must match the value mode you intend to use. With --strict-json, pass valid JSON values: numbers and booleans are unquoted, while a string is a JSON string. In a POSIX shell, a string can be protected from the shell with single quotes around its JSON representation:

openclaw config set gateway.bind '"loopback"' --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set gateway.enabled true --strict-json --dry-run

Without --strict-json, value mode does not perform the full schema check. A dry run in that mode can appear successful even though the real write would be rejected. For automation, use strict JSON whenever the command supports it.

Build a single-field update script

The following pattern changes a Gateway port. Replace the path and value only after confirming them with config.schema.lookup. The script refuses to apply a change if the current file exists but cannot be backed up, if validation fails, or if the post-write read does not match the requested value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

CONFIG_PATH="${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}"
FIELD='gateway.port'
VALUE='18789'

if [ -f "$CONFIG_PATH" ]; then
  BACKUP_PATH="$CONFIG_PATH.$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S).bak"
  cp -- "$CONFIG_PATH" "$BACKUP_PATH"
  printf 'Backup: %sn' "$BACKUP_PATH"
fi

printf 'Current value:n'
openclaw config get "$FIELD"

openclaw config set "$FIELD" "$VALUE" --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set "$FIELD" "$VALUE" --strict-json

printf 'Value after write:n'
openclaw config get "$FIELD"

The final read is not optional. It catches a wrong path, an unexpected environment override, and a command that returned success without producing the value the job expected. For stronger checking, capture the output and compare it with the canonical value your script passed, taking care to compare JSON types rather than treating every result as text.

Handling a missing configuration file

A missing file means OpenClaw can operate with safe defaults; it does not prove that a requested field is absent from the effective configuration. Decide whether your automation is meant to create an explicit override or leave the default in place. If it creates an override, run the dry run first and make the first successful write the point at which the backup policy records the new file. Do not create an empty hand-written file merely to make a backup command succeed.

Removing a value

Use config unset when the desired state is removal, not an empty string:

openclaw config unset gateway.port --dry-run
openclaw config unset gateway.port

As with set, confirm the resulting state with openclaw config get gateway.port. If the command reports a default or an absent value after the removal, that is different from leaving an explicit value in the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automate several changes with a batch or patch

Batch files

For a coordinated change to multiple fields, use --batch-file rather than launching unrelated writes one after another. Validate the complete batch first:

openclaw config set --batch-file FILE --dry-run
openclaw config set --batch-file FILE

Batch files are capped at 8 MiB. The exact batch-file syntax is version-specific; obtain it from openclaw config --help on the installed release and keep that format under version control with the script that consumes it. A batch dry run protects the file from a write, but your job should still read back every field it changed after applying the batch.

Patch files

config patch --file FILE --dry-run is the alternative when your deployment process already produces a patch document. The patch dry run is useful when you need schema validation for a group of edits. Do not assume that a patch format accepted by one OpenClaw release is accepted by another; validate it with the target installation’s help output and a dry run.

Ordering and partial failure

Prefer one batch or patch for fields that must change together. If you must issue separate commands, make each one follow the same backup, dry-run, write, and read-back policy, and record which step completed. A later failure should not leave operators guessing which earlier values were already committed.

Backups, atomic writes, and rollback

Take your own backup before automation starts. Do not rely only on openclaw doctor --fix to create one, because that repair command is intended for remediation rather than as the backup policy for every deployment. Keep backups outside a symlink chain and restrict their permissions if they contain credentials or provider settings.

Atomic replacement prevents readers from seeing a half-written file, but it does not make a logically wrong change safe. A backup lets an operator restore the previous file if validation was incomplete, a dependent service rejects the new setting, or an upgrade changes the schema. Restore the file only while OpenClaw is stopped or quiescent enough to avoid a concurrent write, then run a read-only health check before restarting normal traffic.

Do not run two writers against the same configuration simultaneously. OpenClaw’s atomic operation protects the individual write, not your higher-level intent. Use the lock or serialized job mechanism provided by your scheduler so that two automation runs cannot both read the old value and then overwrite each other’s changes.

Validate and repair with OpenClaw Doctor

Read-only check first

openclaw doctor is the read-only health check. Run it after a configuration deployment when you need a broader assessment than a single config get, and run it after every OpenClaw upgrade before applying repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying repairs

openclaw doctor --fix applies repairs. --repair is an alias, and --yes skips confirmation prompts when a non-interactive job is intentionally authorized to make those repairs. A third-party command reference reports that the repair process backs up ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json to ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json.bak and removes unknown keys while listing each removal. Treat that backup as an additional safety net, not your only copy, and review the removal list before accepting the result in production.

Doctor options are not documented consistently across third-party guides. Flags such as --deep, --non-interactive, --check, and --list-checks have been reported with different spellings or availability. Run openclaw doctor --help on the installed version and do not build a script around an option that help output does not show. In particular, do not assume that openclaw doctor --fix --dry-run exists: it is described as a desired direction in one guide and is absent from official examples.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Plan for upgrades and migrations

The built-in updater runs configuration migrations and restarts the Gateway. A third-party changelog describes a dry-run preview for that updater, but this behavior is not confirmed by the official CLI examples, so verify the option on your installation before automating it. Installations managed by a package manager must be upgraded through that package manager; the official v2026.9.5 release notes specifically call this out.

The official v2026.9.5 notes also describe improved configuration backups. That improvement does not remove the need for an application-level backup, because your script may change more than the updater does and may run on an earlier or later release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One 2026 changelog guide reports that an xAI plugin configuration relocation required openclaw doctor --fix after an upgrade or web search could fail silently. The report is not verified against the release notes, so treat it as an upgrade checklist item rather than a universal rule: run openclaw doctor, inspect its findings, and apply --fix only when the installed command recommends a repair.

Know when a restart is required

Changing the file and changing the running process are separate operations. Some settings are read when the Gateway starts, while others may be reloadable. The available documentation does not establish a complete per-key restart matrix. After a successful write, restart or reload the Gateway when the field’s documentation requires it, and otherwise verify behavior through the relevant health check instead of assuming that every edit takes effect immediately.

Keep the restart outside the write transaction when possible. That lets the script prove the file contains the intended value before it interrupts service. If a restart fails, the backup and read-back output identify the configuration state that preceded the failure.

Common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Response
Dry run succeeds, real write is rejected Value mode was used without full schema validation Repeat with --strict-json; for grouped changes use a patch dry run
The expected file did not change OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH points elsewhere Print the effective path in the job and use that same environment for every command
A symlink disappeared Atomic replacement replaced the symlink path Use a real file and configure its location with OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH
An array edit targets the wrong element Index or bracket syntax differs on the installed release Confirm supported syntax with openclaw config --help and read the indexed value first
Doctor asks questions in automation Repair is interactive by default Use --yes only in an approved non-interactive repair job
Doctor reports unknown keys after an upgrade A migration or plugin moved or removed fields Save the reported backup, review each key, and apply --fix only after checking the release’s migration notes
The file is correct but behavior is unchanged The Gateway has not reloaded the affected setting Follow that field’s restart or reload requirement and then run the appropriate health check

Production checklist

  • Run the job as the Gateway’s operating-system user, or document the deliberate permission model.
  • Resolve OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH once and use the resulting path for backup and verification.
  • Consult config.schema.lookup before changing an unfamiliar field.
  • Back up the existing file before the first write.
  • Use strict JSON and a dry run for every automated set, unset, batch, or patch.
  • Keep the managed file as a regular file, not a symlink.
  • Serialize writers so concurrent jobs cannot overwrite each other’s decisions.
  • Read every changed field after the write.
  • Run openclaw doctor after upgrades before deciding whether repairs are needed.
  • Use doctor --fix and --yes only with an explicit approval and a retained backup.
  • Restart or reload the Gateway only when the changed field requires it, then verify service health.
  • Keep secrets out of shell history, logs, and batch files; pass them through the least-exposed mechanism supported by your deployment environment.

What this approach gives you

OpenClaw’s config CLI turns configuration changes into observable transactions: a known path, a schema-aware dry run, an atomic write, and a post-write read. Backups and serialized jobs protect against operational mistakes, while doctor provides a separate health and migration check. The remaining version-sensitive details—batch-file syntax, array-path parsing, doctor flags, updater previews, and restart requirements—belong in the installed release’s own help and field documentation, not in assumptions copied from another version.
