What Bifröst does—and what to do first
In God of War Ragnarök, Bifröst is a combat status effect. The official PlayStation hands-on gameplay report, published October 21, 2022, describes the purple portion of Kratos’s health bar as harmless at first; when an enemy hits him again, it detonates and slices a significant chunk from his HP.

When you see that purple segment, make avoiding the next hit your priority. Keep track of nearby enemies and respond to the warning on the attack that is actually coming rather than dodging in a fixed direction.
Choose your defense from the attack warning
PlayStation’s combat guide explains how to respond to the main attack cues:

A correctly timed dodge avoids most attacks, but timing and positioning matter. Dodging too early or too late can leave Kratos exposed, and moving away from one enemy’s strike can put him in the path of another. Stay aware of the whole fight while the purple health-bar segment is present.
Make incoming attacks easier to read
If you have trouble seeing enemy status or attacks from outside the camera view, adjust the relevant HUD and accessibility options. The official God of War Ragnarök accessibility page describes these aids:

- Enemy Health Bars: can display status effects on enemies.
- Enemy Off-screen Indicator: points out the direction and type of an incoming attack.
These options improve the information on screen; they do not prevent damage by themselves. Use the warning to choose a dodge, parry, or interruption.
Do not rely on a universal cleanse or dodge direction
The official guidance supports avoiding the follow-up hit and using the normal combat cues. It does not establish a single dodge direction, timing, or input that works for every Bifröst move, nor does it establish a universal Spartan Rage cleanse. Spartan Rage is a limited-duration combat ability; its activation can send nearby enemies flying, but that is not a guaranteed way to remove Bifröst. Treat it as one possible way to disrupt nearby enemies, not as a substitute for reading their attacks.

Is special gear required?
No specific build or item is required to defend against Bifröst. A 2023 official New Game Plus build guide includes offensive effects that deal Bifröst, and mentions a Black Bear cloak with a last-second evade effect. Those are optional build details, not universal defenses or requirements for avoiding the status effect.
