Start from a retailer’s known website or official app—not a link in an unexpected post, ad, email, or text. Then verify who is selling the exact offer, what the checkout total includes, and how you can pay and get your money back if something goes wrong. A familiar store name alone does not prove that the store is the seller.

- Open the retailer directly. Type its known web address or use its official app instead of following an unsolicited link or social-media ad. The FTC warns that fake ads can impersonate companies and lead to counterfeit goods, a different item, or no delivery. FTC guidance on avoiding online shopping scams.
- Check the seller on the exact offer. On a marketplace, distinguish the platform hosting the listing from the seller fulfilling it. Review the seller’s history and search the seller name and destination URL alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” A historical Tom’s Guide restock report documented a third-party offer reached through Walmart’s product pathway; that example does not establish current stock or current retailer policy. Tom’s Guide’s August 4, 2025 live coverage.
- Compare the price and bundle contents. Check what is included—console, accessories, games, and any other items—against the standard product offer. A surprisingly low price is a reason to investigate, not proof on its own that a listing is fraudulent. Nintendo advises shoppers to buy within their own country and notes that a retailer operating both standard retail and auction sites may be more accountable for a transaction. Nintendo Support: Online Auction Sites.
- Read the full checkout terms. Confirm the total price, shipping costs, delivery estimate, return and cancellation rules, and any buyer-protection terms before paying. Save a copy of the listing and terms.
- Check the payment method. Prefer a credit card when available. Walk away if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfer, a payment app, or cryptocurrency; the FTC identifies these demands as likely scam signals. Credit-card protections may allow a dispute for qualifying problems, but the specific rights and deadlines depend on your issuer and jurisdiction. FTC online-shopping guidance and FTC: How To Avoid a Scam.
- Keep account credentials private. Do not share or transfer Nintendo Account login information to complete a purchase. Nintendo warns that these transactions may enable account takeover and violate account terms. Nintendo Support Japan notice dated July 24, 2023.
Warning signs that should make you stop
- A post, message, or ad pressures you to buy immediately or says you will lose the deal unless you act at once. The FTC identifies pressure as a common scam tactic. FTC: How To Avoid a Scam.
- The offer is unusually cheap, but the seller, URL, or bundle details do not check out. Low prices can be bait for counterfeit goods, a different product, or non-delivery.
- The seller’s name is unclear, unfamiliar, or different from the retailer you thought was selling the console.
- The seller asks for a payment method that is difficult to reverse, or requests Nintendo Account credentials.
- The listing’s delivery, cancellation, or return terms are missing or too unclear to assess before checkout.
What to do if you paid for a suspicious listing
- Contact the retailer or marketplace promptly through its official website or app, not through contact details in a suspicious message.
- Contact your card issuer or payment provider as soon as possible to ask about available dispute or recovery options. Rights and deadlines vary by issuer and jurisdiction.
- Keep the listing, receipt, order confirmation number, and all messages with the seller or platform.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
