The safest way to exchange gold for game time in World of Warcraft is to use Blizzard’s WoW Token when it is available in your region—not an outside gold-selling service. Blizzard warns that gold-selling offers can expose players to phishing and account-compromise risks. For any suspicious offer or completed scam, preserve the details and consult current Blizzard Support and in-game reporting options; a report does not guarantee that a trade will be reversed or gold restored.
Choose an official exchange, not an outside gold seller
Blizzard distinguishes its sanctioned WoW Token system from third-party gold sales. In its 2015 announcement, Blizzard described the Token as a secure, sanctioned way to exchange real money for gold. A third-party seller is not made safe by using a familiar payment method, receiving gold in a trade, or seeing a convincing website.
| Route | Blizzard’s stated status | How it works | Security considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| WoW Token | Blizzard-described sanctioned exchange. Availability and current mechanics depend on region and are not established by the cited historical announcements. | A dedicated in-game Token exchange connects gold and game time; Blizzard’s 2015 announcement describes that purpose. | Uses Blizzard’s official mechanism rather than an outside gold-selling service. |
| Third-party gold offer | Blizzard warns players against gold-selling services. | An outside service arranges a sale outside Blizzard’s sanctioned Token exchange. | Blizzard warns that phishing can imitate it through email or in-game messages and advises against gold-selling and power-leveling services. |
Blizzard’s Token details in the 2015 announcement are historical, not confirmation of today’s availability, pricing, or redemption rules. A 2017 announcement said that in supported regions a gold-purchased Token could be redeemed for game time or Battle.net Balance and could not be resold after purchase. It gave $15 USD as the Battle.net Balance amount in that announcement while noting regional variation. Do not treat that amount or those mechanics as universal or necessarily current. Check Blizzard’s current in-game and support information for your region.

Recognize messages that put your account at risk
A gold offer can be a lure to steal account access, not just a questionable transaction. Blizzard warns that phishing messages may imitate the company in email or in-game communication. It also says compromised accounts may be used to strip valuable equipment and materials, support botting, or advertise unauthorized services. That describes risks associated with compromised accounts; it does not mean every seller or gold trade has the same origin.
- Be wary of unexpected messages or links claiming to be from Blizzard, especially if they urge you to act quickly or sign in through a link.
- Do not give account credentials to a gold seller or enter them on a site reached through an unsolicited offer.
- Do not assume that a familiar-looking message, website, or promised delivery makes an outside sale authorized or safe.
Blizzard’s account-security guidance discusses phishing and warns against gold-selling and power-leveling services: “Account Security and You (Yes, You)”. In a March 15, 2024 security article, Blizzard said it is committed to combating bots, gold selling and buying, and spam while ensuring stolen accounts are returned to their owners: “Defend Azeroth When You Defend Your Account”. That commitment is not a promise that every individual trade can be reversed.

If an offer or trade seems suspicious
Before you trade
- Decline outside gold-selling offers rather than following their links or sharing account information.
- If your goal is to exchange gold and game time, check whether the WoW Token is currently available to you in the game and review the terms shown there.
- If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, avoid its links and consult Blizzard’s official site or support resources directly.
After a suspected scam or account compromise
- Stop communicating with the suspected seller and do not provide further credentials or payment.
- Keep relevant details, such as message content, character names, transaction timing, and any links or payment records. Preserve them for your own account of what happened.
- Use Blizzard’s current Support resources and the in-game reporting interface to find the appropriate reporting route. The exact current navigation, evidence requirements, and remedies are not established here, so follow the instructions presented by Blizzard.
- If you think someone accessed your account, go to Blizzard’s official account-security and support resources directly and follow their current recovery instructions.
Blizzard’s 2011 customer-support policy article describes some unrelated disputes as evaluated case by case; it is historical and does not establish a current policy for gold-trade scams. Do not assume support will reimburse lost gold, restore items, or reverse a player-to-player trade. The result of a report or support request is not guaranteed.
