1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBack up a Space Engineers dedicated server by shutting it down normally, then copying the complete world folder and the server configuration file to a dated location. Keep a second copy before you restore anything. To restore a world, stop the server, save the currently live files somewhere else, replace the live world files with the backup, and start the server again. The important details are finding the save directory the server is actually using and avoiding a forced shutdown that skips the final save.

The safe backup and restore sequence
A dedicated server has its own save data. A local Steam save on the administrator’s PC is not automatically the same world, so copying the wrong folder can produce a backup that never loads on the server.

- Stop the server through its normal shutdown control and wait for it to finish saving.
- Locate the dedicated server’s active save directory.
- Copy the entire world folder and

- For a restore, stop the server again, copy the current files aside, replace the live world files with the backup contents, and restart.
The exact directory differs between installations, and some Windows systems contain a duplicate-looking save under ProgramData. Confirm which copy the server is loading before you edit or restore anything.
Why a clean shutdown matters
Use the server’s ordinary stop or shutdown action. A normal shutdown gives the game an opportunity to write the current world state before the process exits. If the server is killed instead, the latest changes may never reach disk.

Do not use /f for a routine stop
The /f force-stop option terminates the process without saving. Reserve it for a genuinely hung server when a normal stop does not respond, and treat the most recent unsaved activity as potentially lost. After a forced stop, make a new backup only after the server has been started and shut down normally again.
A practical shutdown checklist
- Announce the maintenance window in chat or your community channel.
- Ask players to leave vehicles, inventories and constructions in a stable state.
- Use the ordinary stop button or command in the dedicated-server interface.
- Wait until the process has exited and the server panel no longer reports it as running.
- Only then copy, rename or replace world files.
Where dedicated-server worlds are stored
Save-location guidance for Space Engineers is inconsistent, so check the paths that match your installation rather than assuming a single universal directory.

| SteamCMD installation | The TempContent folder under the dedicated-server installation directory |
The save structure created by that installation. |
The first path is commonly described for Steam installs, while other documentation points to ProgramDataSpaceEngineersDedicated. A community report describes a duplicate save under ProgramData that continued loading even after a copy in AppData had been edited. That is why checking both locations is safer than copying the first folder you find.
How to identify the active copy
- Stop the server normally.
- Note the modification times of the candidate world folders in AppData, ProgramData and, where applicable, the SteamCMD installation.
- Make a harmless, clearly identifiable change only if you can do so safely, or compare which folder receives new files after a normal test save and shutdown.
- Start the server and verify the result in game. If the server keeps loading an older state, stop it and inspect the other candidate directory.
Do not delete the apparent duplicate until you have established which location the current installation uses. Keeping both during the investigation protects the only usable copy if the path assumption is wrong.

What a complete backup contains
The world folder
Copy the world folder itself, including every file and subfolder inside it. Do not copy only a single save file or a parent directory that merely contains several unrelated worlds. A folder-level copy preserves the saved game data the dedicated server needs.
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg
Also copy the dedicated-server configuration file. It contains server-level settings that may be required to reproduce the same behavior after a restore or migration.
Reports disagree about where this configuration file lives: one description places it in the server’s AppData area, while a community post places a copy inside each world’s save folder. Search the active dedicated-server directory and the world folder for SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg; include the copy that the running installation uses, and preserve any second copy until you know which one is authoritative.
Use a dated, immutable-looking backup name
Create a folder such as SE-Backup-2026-10-14-2300 on a different volume or machine. The date and time make it possible to select a known-good point without guessing. Keep the original folder unchanged; perform tests on a duplicate.

Step-by-step: backing up a Windows dedicated server
- Schedule the stop. Tell players when the server will be unavailable and allow enough time for them to disconnect.
- Shut down normally. Use the dedicated-server stop control. Avoid
/funless the process is unresponsive. - Open the save locations. Check
%AppData%RoamingSpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves,ProgramDataSpaceEngineersDedicated, and the SteamCMD installation’sTempContentpath when relevant. - Find the active world. Match the folder name to the world you administer and confirm that its files have the most recent modification times.
- Copy the whole folder. Copy the world folder, not just its contents and not a numbered account or Steam-ID folder that surrounds it.
- Copy the configuration. Add
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgfrom the active configuration location. If the installation keeps a copy inside the world folder, preserve that relationship in the backup. - Make a second copy. Put another copy on separate storage before you overwrite any live files. A second location protects against a bad replacement, disk failure or accidental deletion.
- Record what you saved. Note the server installation type, the source path, the world name, the timestamp and any settings that are intentionally different from defaults.
- Restart only after the copy completes. If the server uses an automatic-save cycle, starting it before the copy is complete can make it difficult to tell which version is the backup.
Step-by-step: restoring a world from a backup
A restore replaces the files the server is currently using. Treat it as a destructive operation even when the backup is known to be good.
- Stop the server normally. Do not copy over an active world while the game is writing it.
- Preserve the current state first. Rename or copy the live world folder and the current configuration to a separate safety folder, for example
SE-PreRestore-2026-10-14-2315. This gives you a way back if the selected backup is older than expected. - Open the active live-world directory. Use the path you confirmed during the backup process, not a different AppData or ProgramData copy.
- Open the backup’s world folder. Select all of its files and subfolders. Copy the contents into the live world folder, or replace the live folder with the backed-up folder while preserving the directory name the server expects.
- Confirm replacement prompts. Choose the option that replaces existing files. A restore that merely creates a new folder beside the old one can leave the server loading the old data.
- Restore the configuration deliberately. If the backup includes
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg, put it in the configuration location used by this installation. Do not overwrite a newer configuration accidentally; compare or retain the pre-restore copy if you need current server settings. - Start the server. Watch the startup log or panel for errors, then connect and inspect the world.
- Verify before announcing success. Check the expected date of the world, player inventories, important constructions, settings and any recently changed areas.
Why you should download or copy current files first
Restore tools and manual file replacement can overwrite every file in the selected live-world directory. Saving the current files before the operation is the only straightforward way to recover if you select the wrong backup or discover that the backup is incomplete.
Using a hosting panel’s backup and restore tools
If your provider supplies a managed backup system, use that system’s documented workflow before manually editing files. Hosting panels can store worlds in provider-specific paths and may stop the service automatically.
In-game restore scripts
One host’s documented in-game restore script copies every file from a selected backup folder over the current world files. That is a file replacement, not a merge: files that are present in the live directory can be overwritten by the backup version. Download or copy the current files first if you might need them.

Control-panel restores
A control-panel restore is a separate procedure from the in-game script. Follow the panel’s own stop, backup-selection and restart steps, and do not assume that a backup made by one tool appears in the other tool’s list. If the panel documentation and the files on disk disagree, stop the server and ask the provider which directory their service account uses before replacing anything.
Migrating a local world to a dedicated server
To move a world from a local game installation, copy the world folder itself into the dedicated server’s save directory. Do not copy the numbered Steam-ID or account folder that surrounds the world and expect the dedicated server to discover it automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close the local game and make a separate copy of the local world.
- Identify the actual world folder inside the local save structure.
- Stop the dedicated server and locate its active save directory.
- Copy the world folder into that directory, preserving the folder name and internal files.
- Copy or create the dedicated configuration in the location used by the server installation.
- Start the server and confirm that the migrated world appears before allowing normal play.
Keep settings consistent
A community helper advises that the world’s sandbox configuration and the main dedicated-server configuration should agree after a move. Treat this as practical advice rather than a guaranteed rule: compare the settings that control gameplay and server behavior, and resolve obvious conflicts before inviting players. Keep the pre-migration files so you can undo a change that produces an unexpected result.

Do not assume a LoadWorld setting exists
No verified documentation establishes a LoadWorld key in the configuration file or as a launch argument. Do not add one based on a forum snippet and expect it to select the world.
Be cautious with the Dedicated Server configuration window
A community thread describes a Saved Worlds option in the dedicated-server configuration window as a way to choose the world, while another player reports that it stores settings rather than game progress. Consider that control unverified. Confirm the result by starting the server and checking the actual loaded world instead of relying on the label alone.

Understand -ignorelastsession
The launch argument -ignorelastsession is reported to ignore the last automatic save and use configuration values. Its behavior is not documented with high confidence, so use it only when you understand how your current launch setup handles arguments, and test on a copied world first.
Restore failures and recovery branches
The server starts but the world is old
- Stop the server and inspect whether the backup was copied into the active directory or into an unused duplicate.
- Check that the world folder was replaced, rather than nested one level deeper inside another folder.
- Compare file modification times with the backup timestamp.
- Check the ProgramData location as well as AppData.
The server fails during startup
- Stop it and restore the pre-restore copy you made before replacing files.
- Confirm that the world folder contains all of its original subfolders and files.
- Restore the previous configuration if the failure began after replacing
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Test the backup on a non-public instance before trying the replacement again.
Recent player activity is missing
If the server was force-killed, the final save may never have been written. A backup made after that event can legitimately be older than the players expect. Use the pre-restore and alternate-location copies to determine whether a newer state exists; do not overwrite them while investigating.
A retention plan that limits damage
Keep more than one restore point when the server is active. A simple rotation is a recent backup for quick recovery, an older dated backup for protection against a corrupted save, and a second-storage copy in case the server disk fails. No required schedule is specified, so choose an interval that fits how often your players build or trade valuable assets.
Quick Recap
- Before maintenance: make a clean-shutdown backup.
- Before a major mod, configuration or game update: create another dated copy and retain the previous one.
- After a successful restore or migration: make a fresh baseline backup once the world has been verified.
- Before deleting anything: open the candidate backup and confirm that the world folder and configuration file are present.
Final verification checklist
- The server was stopped normally, not with
/f, unless it was unresponsive. - The backup came from the dedicated server’s active save directory.
- The complete world folder was copied.
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgwas preserved from the active configuration location.- A second copy exists before any restore.
- The live files were saved aside before replacement.
- The backup contents were copied into the correct live folder without an extra nesting level.
- The server starts and loads the expected world.
- Important builds, inventories and settings were checked in game.
