Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

So the safe workflow depends on where your PS2 saves actually live: an OPL virtual memory card, a PCSX2 card image or folder card, or a physical card used with a real PS2. Keep a separate copy in that system’s native format, and do not assume it can be moved directly into another setup.
There are two similarly named tools to distinguish: ORBIT is the launcher discussed here, while OrbitPS2 Manager is a separate desktop application for managing Open PS2 Loader game libraries.
What ORBIT does—and what it does not document
The ORBIT launcher announcement describes reading the newest save for each game to display a 3D icon. It does not document a backup, export, or save-organization procedure, so there is no substantiated ORBIT menu path to give. Check the launcher’s current documentation or release notes for any newer supported backup feature before following ORBIT-specific instructions. ORBIT launcher announcement
That feature is save visibility, not proof that ORBIT copies or protects save data. To make a backup, first identify the system that stores the save, then copy it using a workflow supported for that system.

Identify where your PS2 saves are stored
| Setup | Save format or location | What to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| OPL | Virtual memory card (VMC) image in OPL’s VMC directory; per-game settings may specify VMC configuration. | The VMC image file used by the game, plus any relevant per-game configuration. |
| PCSX2 image-card mode | A memory-card image file. | The configured card image file. |
| PCSX2 folder-card mode | Save data stored as folders in the host filesystem. | The relevant save folder or folders, preserving their directory structure. |
| Real PS2 | A physical memory card. | The card’s contents through an applicable, supported copy workflow; the physical card alone is not a separate backup. |
PCSX2 explains that folder-card mode stores saves in host-filesystem folders rather than one monolithic card file, and that those saves are isolated from management through the PS2 BIOS. PCSX2 Memory Cards documentation
Back up an OPL virtual memory card
OPL uses virtual memory card images kept in its VMC directory. Its guide describes VMC filenames based on a game ID, and per-game settings can contain VMC configuration. Confirm which image the game is assigned to before copying; backing up a different image will not preserve that game’s progress. Open PS2 Loader User Guide

- Never lose saved data again or have to constantly switch between smaller memory cards | 256MB (2043 Block) memory card is perfect even for the most demanding PlayStation 2 games
- Durable, compact design mimics look and feel of original memory cards and is compatible with all PS2 games and systems | Memory card features two switchable data banks to achieve 256 megabyte capacity
- Please Note: To reach full capacity of memory card dual 128 megabyte banks must be switched between | Front facing switch on card must be set to apropriate memory bank prior to turning on console
- Compatible with: PS2 (Playstation 2) consoles only | Will not work with backwards compatible fat PS3 consoles or PSONE (PSX) systems
- Package Contents: 1x PS2 memory card | Works on all models of PS2 including launch, fat and slim console variants
- Use OPL’s per-game settings to identify the VMC assigned to the game. Note the image filename and its location.
- Exit the game and OPL, then make a separate copy of the corresponding VMC image in the OPL VMC directory. Keep the original in place.
- Give the backup a clear name or place it in a dated backup folder. Keep any separate per-game settings information needed to recognize the assignment.
- To verify the copy, retain the original and test the backup only through a supported OPL workflow. Do not overwrite the sole working image as a test.
If you use OrbitPS2 Manager, remember it is not the ORBIT launcher. Its project page documents VMC creation, listing, deletion, and assignment for an OPL game library; it does not establish that the manager edits individual saves inside a VMC. OrbitPS2 Manager project
Back up PCSX2 saves in the format you use
PCSX2 supports both memory-card image and folder modes. Preserve the active format: copy the configured image in image mode, or copy the relevant save folder structure in folder mode. Avoid changing formats or reorganizing files as part of the backup.

- TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
- BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
- IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
- NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
- WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.
- Close PCSX2 so the card is not being used while you copy it.
- Find the memory-card location configured for the game and determine whether it is an image file or a folder card.
- Copy that file or folder structure to a separate location, such as another drive or a clearly named dated backup folder.
- Leave the working card untouched until you have checked that the backup is present and can be read through a documented PCSX2 workflow.
Folder-card saves cannot be managed through the PS2 BIOS in the way BIOS-visible card saves can. Treat the host folder structure as the save data, not as a disposable cache.
Preserve saves from a real PS2
A physical PS2 memory card stores saves, but simply owning the card does not create a backup. Make a separate copy only through a workflow supported for your equipment and software; the sources available here do not establish one universal procedure for copying a physical card. Keep the original card unchanged until you have verified the copy using the method you intend to restore with. PlayStation 2 support

Can you move saves between ORBIT, OPL, PCSX2, and a real PS2?
The available documentation does not establish direct interchangeability among ORBIT, OPL VMC images, PCSX2 card images, PCSX2 folder cards, and physical memory cards. Similar game saves do not mean the underlying storage formats are interchangeable. Before transferring, identify both the source and target formats and use a tool with a documented import, export, or conversion path for that exact pair. Do not drop a card image into a different system’s folder and assume it will work.

Keep backups findable and recoverable
- Keep the active card or VMC separate from its backup; do not treat a second name for the same file as a second copy.
- Use descriptive names that identify the game or card, the source system, and the date of the copy.
- Preserve file or folder structure when copying, especially for PCSX2 folder cards.
- Record which VMC is assigned to each OPL game when per-game settings matter.
- Do not delete or overwrite the original until the separate copy has been checked through a supported workflow.
