Back up the storage_1 persistence folder inside your active mission first. It contains the camps, bases, vehicles and world items that make a DayZ world persist. Then copy serverDZ.cfg, keys/, your mod folders and the complete mission folder. For a restore, stop the server, preserve the current files, clear only the active storage data, and copy the backed-up .bin files into its place.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted DayZ servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
DayZ folder names differ with the mission and instanceId, and published community guides disagree about some layouts. The procedure below is therefore deliberately verification-first. No official Bohemia Interactive backup procedure was located in the available references as of October 14, 2026; treat the settings and paths as build-dependent and test a restore on a copy before changing a live world.

A useful backup has two layers: the persistence data that represents the world and the files needed to start that world with the same rules and content. Losing the first layer rolls back or empties the world; losing the second can leave you with a save that cannot load correctly.
Priority one: the active persistence folder
Start with mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/ under the server root. The data/ subfolder contains the active storage files, normally a set of .bin files plus two failsaves identified as 001 and 002. The same storage tree may also contain a backup/ directory holding files created automatically or manually. Copy the entire storage_1 directory rather than selecting individual bins so that its structure and failsaves remain together.

Some installations use storage_<instanceId> instead of a literal storage_1. The mission name can also differ from the template shown in examples. Before copying anything, identify which mission is active on your server and which storage slot its configuration uses. A backup of the wrong slot is a valid-looking folder that restores the wrong world.
Priority two: configuration, keys, mods and mission files
Copy these items from the server root as well:
serverDZ.cfg, which defines the server configuration and includes persistence-related settings.- The
keys/directory, used to validate signed content. - Every installed mod directory, commonly named with an
@prefix. A persistence backup made without the matching mods may not load the same objects or scripts. - The complete
mpmissions/directory, including the active mission and its economy or mission files.
A community answer recommends copying the whole server folder when practical because that captures mods, keys, configuration and the running mission in one operation. This is a community recommendation rather than an official Bohemia Interactive requirement, so exclude temporary downloads or very large caches if your hosting platform documents them as disposable. Keep the active mission and storage data intact.
Find the correct save location before you copy
Inspect the server root
The server root is the directory containing serverDZ.cfg, mpmissions/, keys/ and any @ModName folders. If your host presents a control-panel file manager, begin at the panel’s server-files or root view rather than a web-download area. On a self-hosted machine, use the directory from which the DayZ server process is launched.
Match the mission and instance
Open mpmissions/ and identify the mission currently selected by the server. Inside that mission, look for storage_1/ or another storage_<instanceId>/ directory. The instanceId setting determines the persistence slot on some configurations. Another reference places data specifically under mpmissions/<template>/storage_1/; because these descriptions conflict, confirm the path by checking which storage directory contains recently changing files while the server is running, then stop the server before copying.

Do not infer the active slot solely from a directory name. If several storage directories exist, record their names, modification dates and associated instance settings. Changing instanceId starts a fresh world while leaving the previous slot on disk according to one community reference. Make a complete backup before changing it so the old world can be identified and recovered.
Recognize the alternative layout
One hosting guide describes a different arrangement with missions/db/, profiles/ and storage_x/, including players.db and vehicles.db. That does not match the .bin-based storage_1/data/ layout described by other DayZ guides. Treat the database layout as a possibility specific to that host or build, not as a reason to rename files. If your server actually uses it, preserve the complete documented tree and verify a test restore with that provider before deleting anything.

Stopping the process before a snapshot is the safest default. DayZ can be writing a persistence file while you copy it; a file captured halfway through a write may be unusable even though the copy operation reports success. A forum user recommends Robocopy rather than Xcopy for live copies because retry switches can pause and retry when a file is being written, but this is not official guidance. If you must copy online, use a tool with documented retry behavior and schedule the snapshot during a quiet period; otherwise stop the server first.
Procedure for a consistent offline backup
- Announce maintenance to players and record the date, time and current server build, mission name and
instanceId. - Stop the DayZ server cleanly through the host panel or service manager. Wait until the process has exited and no server files are still changing.
- Navigate to the active
mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/(or verifiedstorage_<instanceId>) directory. - Copy the entire storage directory to a dated destination. Include
data/, all.binfiles, failsaves001and002, and anybackup/subdirectory. - Copy
serverDZ.cfg,keys/, every required mod directory and the completempmissions/directory. - Preserve the original directory hierarchy. Do not flatten
data/into the mission folder or rename bins to make them easier to sort. - Record the backup timestamp and the source path in the backup folder’s name or a companion text file. Keep the source and destination clearly separated so a later restore cannot overwrite the only copy.
- Start the server and watch its log or console for a normal startup. If the server does not start, stop again and investigate before allowing players to create new state on an uncertain copy.
What to check before trusting the snapshot
- Confirm that the destination contains the expected
storage_1/data/tree and non-empty persistence files. - Check the
.binfiles for 0 KB sizes. A forum user associates zero-length bins with a crash; they are a warning sign, not proof of the exact cause. - Compare the number of files and directories with the source while the server was stopped.
- Open the dated copy and verify that
serverDZ.cfg,keys/, mods and the active mission are present when you intended a full-server backup. - Keep at least one copy on storage that is not the same disk or hosting volume as the live server. A disk failure can destroy both otherwise.
That last separation is an operational precaution rather than a DayZ-specific guarantee. The essential test is whether a second location contains a complete, dated copy that can be read independently.

How often to back up and how many versions to retain
There is no official Bohemia Interactive retention schedule in the available references. A hosting guide suggests the following starting point for small vanilla servers, with more frequent snapshots for busy or modded communities:
| Server situation | Persistence snapshot | Mission and configuration copy | Minimum versions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla server | Daily storage_1 snapshot |
Weekly | At least three dated versions |
| Mid-size modded server | More often than daily, based on activity | More often than weekly when mods or mission files change | At least three, plus a pre-change copy |
| Busy server with frequent restarts | Before each restart is suggested | Whenever configuration or mission content changes | Three or more points in time, including the latest pre-restart copy |
These are community recommendations, not measured failure statistics. Use the shortest interval that limits the rollback your players can tolerate. Always take an additional full copy before changing the mission, updating a mod set, changing instanceId or editing persistence settings.
Restore a DayZ server from a backup
Restoration replaces live persistence. Perform it during maintenance, and test the procedure on a duplicate server or copied directory first whenever your host allows it. The following method reflects a community forum procedure, not official documentation.
Step 1: stop and preserve the current state
- Notify players and stop the server completely.
- Before deleting anything, copy the current
storage_1(or the verified instance storage directory) to a separate, newly dated “pre-restore” folder. This gives you a way back if the selected backup is older than expected or incompatible. - Confirm that the backup you intend to use contains the same mission name and storage slot. Do not restore a
storage_1copy into a server currently configured for a differentinstanceIdwithout first resolving that mismatch.
Step 2: replace only the active data
- In the live storage directory, open
data/. - Clear the existing files in that
data/directory. Do not delete the entire mission, thebackup/directory or configuration files unless your host’s documented procedure explicitly requires it. - From the chosen backup, copy the backed-up
.binfiles and the associated failsaves into the livedata/directory, preserving names and structure. - Compare the restored tree with the source backup before starting the server. A missing bin or an extra level of nested folders can make the server create or load an unexpected state.
Step 3: restore supporting files when necessary
If the failure involved a mod update, mission edit, key change or configuration change, restore the matching serverDZ.cfg, keys/, mod directories and mission files from the same dated full backup. If only player or world persistence was lost and the rest of the installation is known to match, changing fewer files reduces the chance of undoing an unrelated configuration fix. Keep a record of exactly which components were restored.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 4: start cautiously and verify
- Start the server with no players connected if possible.
- Watch startup output for storage errors, missing keys, missing mods or an indication that a new world is being initialized.
- Join as an administrator and check a few known persistence points: a familiar base, a vehicle location and an expected world item. Do not modify the restored world until you are satisfied that the correct date and slot loaded.
- If the server starts with an empty world, stop it immediately. Continuing to play can overwrite the evidence you need to diagnose a wrong path, wrong
instanceIdor failed copy.
Prevent automatic “repair” from hiding a bad restore
The storageAutoFix setting is reported to check persistence files at startup and replace corrupted ones with empty files when set to 1. The behavior is described by a community reference and should be verified on your build. An automatic empty replacement can make a damaged save appear to start successfully while silently removing state.
For a restore, make the backup copy first, inspect for 0 KB or otherwise suspicious bins, and understand the current storageAutoFix value before launching. If the server reports corruption, preserve the failed files and logs, then try the selected backup on a copy. Do not repeatedly start and stop the only live directory while hoping the setting will recover it.
Recommended Free Tools
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Bases, camps and vehicles are missing after restore | The wrong mission, storage slot or backup date was used. | Stop the server, preserve the current directory, and verify the active mission and instanceId against the backup path. |
| The server creates a fresh world | The restored files are in the wrong directory, the slot name does not match, or the data files were not copied into data/. |
Stop immediately; compare the live hierarchy with the source and restore the correct .bin files. |
| Startup reports corrupted persistence | A bin may have been captured during a write, damaged before backup, or rejected by the current build. | Use an older dated snapshot, inspect file sizes, and test with storageAutoFix behavior understood. Keep the failed files for diagnosis. |
| Only some objects or scripts fail | The persistence files were restored without the matching mission or mod set. | Restore the associated mission, mod folders and keys from the same full backup, then retry on a copy. |
| Several storage directories exist | An old instanceId slot or another mission remains on disk. |
Read the current configuration, identify the slot actually mounted by the server, and never delete the other directory until it has its own backup. |
| The copied bins are 0 KB | A crash or interrupted write may have produced empty files. | Do not treat that snapshot as a good restore point; select an earlier verified copy and investigate the shutdown or disk problem. |
Handling instanceId changes
Changing instanceId is not a harmless rename. One reference says it selects a different persistence directory and starts a fresh world while leaving the old slot on disk. Before making the change:
- Stop the server and take a complete backup of the current mission, storage, configuration, keys and mods.
- Write down the old and new values and the exact storage directories they select.
- Make the configuration change, start once to confirm the new slot behavior, and stop again if the result is not what you intended.
- To return to the old world, restore the old setting and use the corresponding backed-up storage directory; do not copy bins between slots without testing.
A practical backup policy for administrators
Document the path and procedure where another administrator can follow it without guessing. Your runbook should name the active mission, current instanceId, backup destination, retention count, restart window and the person responsible for checking snapshots. Label every copy with an unambiguous timestamp such as year-month-day and UTC time, and distinguish “persistence only” from “full server” backups.

Use a three-point minimum: the newest copy for quick recovery, an older copy from before the last restart or update, and a pre-change copy retained until the new configuration has been tested. Modded servers need extra points around mod and mission updates because a persistence snapshot alone may not include the code and keys required to interpret its objects.
Periodically perform a rehearsal on a duplicate directory. Verify that the server can start, that expected world entities appear and that the original live directory remains untouched. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption; a tested copy gives you a known recovery path without risking the production world.
Limits of the available guidance
DayZ hosting guides and community posts do not agree on every save location. The storage_1/data/*.bin model, the storage_<instanceId> naming convention and the alternative database layout may reflect different server versions, hosts or deployment tools. The safest rule is to verify the path your own process is using, copy the complete surrounding structure and test restoration before relying on it for an outage.
Nothing in the available references establishes a universal backup frequency, a guaranteed live-copy method or a supported interpretation of every persistence error. Keep the original files, avoid destructive cleanup until a replacement has been validated, and treat host-specific instructions as authoritative for that host’s tooling.
