On a DayZ server you operate, administrative access is normally enabled in the server configuration. Set a value for passwordAdmin in serverDZ.cfg, restart the server, join it, and enter #login <password> in chat. This is separate from BattlEye RCon, which uses its own password in BEServer_x64.cfg and requires an external RCon client.

What “admin” means in DayZ
DayZ has more than one administration path. The in-game path authenticates through the server’s passwordAdmin setting and gives access to the vanilla commands exposed through chat. BattlEye RCon is an external control channel with a different configuration file, password, port and client. Treat them as separate credentials and separate tools.

The usual in-game method is intended for a server you own or administer. You cannot grant yourself access to a server run by somebody else. The owner must provide the configured admin password or add you through whatever administrator system that server uses.
Vanilla administration is deliberately limited. Commands such as kicking a player or controlling whether new players may join are available through the documented chat interface, but teleporting, item spawning and similar functions generally require a third-party admin mod. A mod does not replace the server password; it adds its own tools after the server has been configured and the mod has been installed correctly.

Before you start
- Make sure you control the DayZ server files or its hosting control panel.
- Know where the active
serverDZ.cfgfile is stored. Editing a copy in the wrong profile or instance directory will not change the running server. - Have permission to stop and start the server. The configuration is read at startup, so a live edit is not enough.
- Choose a long, unique password that is not used for your hosting account, RCon or any personal account.
- Keep a backup of the configuration before changing it, especially if your host provides a web editor that can overwrite files during a restart.
Set up in-game admin access
1. Stop the server
Stop the DayZ instance from the hosting control panel or your normal service-management method. Stopping first prevents the server from rewriting the file while you edit it and ensures the next launch reads the new value.
2. Edit serverDZ.cfg
Open the configuration file and find the line named passwordAdmin. Put your chosen value between the quotation marks:
passwordAdmin = "replace-this-with-a-long-unique-password";Preserve the existing syntax, including the quotation marks and semicolon. Do not add angle brackets to the actual setting; those brackets are only used in instructions to show where your password goes. If the file already contains a value, replace that value rather than creating a second passwordAdmin line.
Use a secret that is difficult to guess and different from the RCon password. Anyone who learns this value may be able to authenticate to the in-game administrator commands, so do not put it in a public server description, community post or ordinary player chat.

3. Save and restart
Save the file, close the editor and start the server again. A restart is required because DayZ reads the server configuration during startup. If your host offers both “save” and “restart,” perform both actions; saving without restarting leaves the old value active.
4. Join and log in
Connect to the server with the DayZ client. Press Enter to open the in-game chat, then type the command using the password you configured:

#login your-password-hereSubmit the message. Do not include the explanatory angle brackets shown in documentation. If authentication succeeds, the server accepts the session as an administrator. Avoid testing by pasting the password into a public channel where other players can see it.
5. Log out when finished
When you no longer need elevated access, use:
#logoutLogging out is a useful habit on shared machines and active community servers. It limits the time an open client remains authenticated and helps prevent an unattended session from being used to issue commands.

Vanilla commands available after login
Hosting documentation commonly lists the following chat commands for an authenticated administrator. Exact behavior can depend on the DayZ server build and host implementation, so test non-destructive commands during a maintenance window before relying on them during an incident.

These commands are not a full creative-control console. In particular, the vanilla path does not by itself provide a general teleport menu or a way to create arbitrary equipment. If your community needs those capabilities, evaluate a maintained admin mod and follow its installation and version requirements.

BattlEye RCon is a separate administration system. It does not use passwordAdmin, and logging in through chat does not configure RCon. RCon connects from outside the game through a remote administration client such as BEC or DaRT.

RConPassword a-different-long-secret

RConPort 2306The example port is not a fixed DayZ requirement. Your client must use the port actually configured for your instance, and that port must be reachable according to your host’s network rules. Use a random RCon secret that is not the same as the in-game admin password.
BEServer_x64.cfg must be in the same folder as BEServer_x64.dll. The folder used by the server is determined by launch parameters such as -bePath and -profiles. If you edit a file elsewhere, BattlEye may never read it. Check the startup parameters and the active profile path supplied by your host before troubleshooting the contents of the file.

Connect with an RCon client
- Install or open an RCon client supported by your server environment, such as BEC or DaRT.
- Enter the server’s address, the configured RCon port and the RCon password from
BEServer_x64.cfg. - Connect while the DayZ server and BattlEye service are running.
- Test a read-only or low-risk operation first, then confirm that commands are being issued to the intended instance.
Some BattlEye setups rename the configuration after startup, producing a filename similar to BEServer_x64_active_<random>.cfg. Guides describe this as normal. Do not assume that a newly named active file means the configuration failed; inspect the active BattlEye directory and your server logs if the RCon client cannot connect.
Why the passwordAdmin behavior can appear inconsistent
Most hosting guides describe passwordAdmin as the credential for the in-game #login method. One hosting guide disputes that interpretation, arguing that the setting authenticates BattlEye RCon rather than providing a built-in administrator menu, and that in-game tools require a mod. The official Bohemia Interactive configuration reference was visible in search results, but its relevant content was not available for verification in the material used here.

That disagreement explains why two servers can appear to treat the same setting differently. The practical starting point for a server you control is still to configure passwordAdmin, restart, and test #login. If the command is rejected, do not repeatedly expose the password in chat. Confirm that you edited the active configuration, that the restart completed, and that the server build or installed mods support the command. For remote administration, configure RCon independently instead of assuming the two passwords are interchangeable.
Adding advanced admin tools
Teleporting, spawning items and similar controls are generally supplied by third-party DayZ admin mods, including tools such as VPP Admin Tools or Community Online Tools. These are optional additions, not part of the basic password procedure.
Plan the installation
- Check that the mod supports the exact DayZ server version and the client version your players use.
- Read the mod’s installation instructions for server files, client subscriptions, load order and key files.
- Back up the server configuration and mission data before changing the mod set.
- Decide which people receive the mod’s administrator permissions; the mod may maintain its own list or permission file.
- Test on a private or locked session before deploying to a populated public server.
Understand the security boundary
An admin mod can expose more powerful actions than vanilla chat. Restrict its permission files, protect access to the hosting panel and keep the mod updated. A player who can execute item-spawn or teleport functions can disrupt the economy and gameplay even if the underlying server password remains secret.
Troubleshooting failed admin login
The server says the password is wrong
- Re-enter the value exactly as it appears in
serverDZ.cfg, including capitalization and punctuation. - Make sure you typed
#loginfollowed by a space and the password, without the explanatory< >characters. - Verify that the edited file belongs to the running instance, not a test profile or inactive server.
- Confirm that the server was fully restarted after the edit.
- Reset the value to a new unique secret if you may have exposed it publicly.
The command is ignored
Check that you opened the correct chat channel and submitted the message from inside the server. Review startup and server logs for configuration errors, including a malformed quote or missing semicolon. A host’s control panel may regenerate configuration files, so compare the live file after a restart with the copy you edited.
Login works but expected tools are missing
Successful authentication does not imply a graphical admin menu or creative controls. Vanilla commands are limited. If you need teleport, item spawning or other extended functions, install a compatible admin mod and complete its separate permission setup.
RCon cannot connect
- Confirm that
BEServer_x64.cfgis alongsideBEServer_x64.dllin the directory selected by-bePathor-profiles. - Use the exact
RConPasswordand the port specified byRConPort. - Check whether the server renamed the file to an active BattlEye filename after startup.
- Verify that the host allows the selected RCon port and that the RCon service is running.
- Keep the RCon password separate from
passwordAdmin; changing one does not change the other.
Security practices for DayZ administrators
- Use separate, long random secrets for
passwordAdmin, RCon and your hosting account. - Never publish either password in server listings, Discord announcements, screenshots or public chat.
- Share credentials only through a private channel with people who genuinely need administrative access.
- Change a password immediately when a staff member leaves, a screenshot exposes it or an unknown person appears to have used administrator commands.
- Log out with
#logoutafter in-game work and close RCon clients when they are unattended. - Keep backups of
serverDZ.cfg,BEServer_x64.cfgand any mod permission files, but store those backups where ordinary players cannot download them. - Use
#lockbefore planned maintenance when you need to stop new joins, and warn connected players before a shutdown or restart.
Can you become admin on somebody else’s DayZ server?
Not by changing your own game files or entering a special client-side command. Administrative authority is controlled by the server. The owner must give you the configured passwordAdmin, provide RCon credentials, or add your account to an administrator list used by a mod. If the owner has not granted access, attempting to bypass it is not a legitimate administration method.
