1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA dependable WooCommerce backup has two parts: a copy of the WordPress database and a copy of wp-content. The database holds products, orders, settings, posts, and pages; wp-content holds themes, extensions, and uploaded media. You need both parts to rebuild the store after a failed update, hosting incident, migration, or accidental deletion.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The safest workflow is to define the recovery point, create or verify a complete off-site backup, test it on staging, and only then change production. A restore can replace newer database content with an older snapshot, so export anything created after the chosen restore time before proceeding.

WooCommerce stores data in two locations. The wp-content directory contains your active theme, plugins and extensions, uploaded product images, downloadable files, and other media. The WordPress database contains WooCommerce products, orders, customers, settings, posts, pages, comments, and related metadata.
“Every WooCommerce store has two places where its data and content are stored: the
wp-contentfolder (themes, extensions, and uploaded media) and the database (products, orders, posts, and pages).”#1 Best Overall

A backup of only one location is incomplete. Copying files without exporting the database leaves you without orders and settings. Exporting the database without wp-content leaves you without themes, extensions, images, and downloadable assets.
Why a WordPress XML export is not enough
The export at Tools > Export can create an XML copy of posts, pages, comments, and related WordPress content. It does not provide a complete WooCommerce recovery: orders, products, store settings, and other database records still require a SQL database export. Use XML as an additional content copy, not as your sole backup.

Choose the recovery point before you copy anything
Write down what you are trying to recover and the exact time you want the restored store to represent. Common targets include:
- Point-in-time rollback: return the entire store to a known timestamp.
- Failed update recovery: undo a WordPress, WooCommerce, theme, or extension change.
- Migration: reproduce the store on another host or server.
- Product extraction: retrieve catalog data without replacing the live site.
Record the site name, UTC timestamp, WordPress version, WooCommerce version, active theme, and important extension versions. If you are reverting WooCommerce itself, use a database backup made for the target version. Schema changes between versions can create inconsistent data when an older application is paired with a newer database.
Manual full backup: exact procedure
A manual backup is useful when you need an immediately identifiable snapshot before an update or when you want a copy under your own control. It consists of a file copy and a database export.
1. Export optional WordPress content
- Sign in to WordPress.
- Open Tools > Export.
- Choose the content scope you need, or select all content.
- Download the XML file and keep it with the rest of the snapshot.
This XML is supplementary. Continue with the database and file backups even if the download succeeds.
2. Download the complete wp-content directory
- Connect to the site with SFTP or FTP, using the host’s documented connection details.
- Locate the WordPress installation and select the entire
wp-contentdirectory, not justuploads. - Download it to local storage. The copy should include themes, plugins and extensions, uploads, and any other directories created inside
wp-content. - Check that the transfer completed and that the archive can be opened. A zero-byte or partial archive is not a usable backup.
SFTP is preferable where available because it encrypts the connection. Keep the original directory structure; restoration tools and WordPress expect these paths.

3. Export the WordPress database as SQL
- Open the database tool supplied by your host, commonly phpMyAdmin.
- Identify the database used by this WordPress installation. The database name and credentials are in
wp-config.php; do not publish that file or its passwords. - Choose Export, select the complete database, and use SQL format.
- Download the resulting
.sqlfile and verify that it has a plausible file size and opens as text containing table statements.
The SQL export is the part that captures WooCommerce orders, products, settings, and related records that XML does not cover. If the database tool offers a “quick” export, confirm that it includes every table belonging to the WordPress database, including tables created by extensions.
4. Package and identify the snapshot
Store the SQL file, the wp-content archive, and optional XML export together. Use a label such as store-name_2026-10-14T1530Z_wp6.x_wc10.x, then add a text inventory containing the exact versions, source host, restore target, and archive sizes. A checksum lets you detect corruption after copying the archive to another disk.
5. Keep a secure off-site copy
Keep at least one copy in a separate location from the web server. A downloaded archive can be placed on separate physical storage, such as an external hard drive, but that device does not schedule backups or provide cloud redundancy by itself. Protect archives because they can contain customer information, order history, addresses, and configuration secrets. Restrict access, encrypt the storage where practical, and do not leave database dumps in a publicly reachable web directory.
Automated and managed backup choices
Manual exports are transparent but easy to forget. WooCommerce’s security guidance names UpdraftPlus, BackupBuddy, and Duplicator as examples of established backup plugins and recommends scheduling the database, files, and media. Jetpack VaultPress Backup is another documented option; it covers the database, plugins, themes, uploads, root files, and WooCommerce products and orders. Its documentation says backups occur at least daily and may also be triggered by events such as publishing or plugin or theme changes.
No service is universally best. Evaluate the following capabilities against the amount of order data you can afford to lose:
| Option | Completeness | Automation | Restore and staging considerations | Ownership and cost questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Manual database plus wp-content copy |
Complete when both parts are copied correctly | None; you schedule and perform each run | Flexible for migration, but every restore step is your responsibility | You choose storage and retention; equipment and storage costs vary |
| Backup plugin | Check that it includes the database, all files, media, and extension tables | Schedules and retention depend on the plugin and plan | Check whether it offers selective restore, staging destinations, and WooCommerce-aware handling | Verify current plan limits, storage destination, access controls, and support |
| Hosting backup | Coverage varies; confirm database, files, uploads, and retention | Usually managed by the host, with schedule controls varying by service | Confirm whether you can download a copy and restore to staging rather than production | Storage remains tied to the host; ask about retention and recovery fees |
| Managed backup service | Jetpack VaultPress Backup documents coverage of database, plugins, themes, uploads, root files, products, and orders | At least daily according to its documentation, with event-triggered backups also described | Check point-in-time depth, restore granularity, connection requirements, and staging workflow | Verify current pricing, geography, retention, and account-security controls before purchase |
Whichever method you choose, make a downloadable copy periodically. A backup that exists only inside the production account is vulnerable if that account, host, or credentials are compromised.
Test updates on staging, not on the live store
Create or use a staging site before major WooCommerce, WordPress, theme, or extension changes. Staging should contain a recent copy of the database and wp-content, with search-engine indexing disabled and payment gateways placed in sandbox or test mode.

How to restore a WooCommerce store safely
Restoration is a replacement operation unless your tool explicitly offers a tested merge. First preserve anything newer than the selected snapshot, then restore files and database in a controlled environment.
1. Freeze and inventory new activity
Record the incident time and stop deployments, imports, bulk edits, and nonessential administration. If customers can still check out, place the store in maintenance mode or temporarily disable checkout after communicating the interruption. Export newer orders, customers, products, coupon changes, and content created after the target backup. Keep these exports separate so they can be reconciled later.
2. Confirm the target and prerequisites
- Confirm the exact backup timestamp and the WordPress and WooCommerce versions it represents.
- Verify that you can access the hosting account, database tool, SFTP or FTP, DNS, and administrator account.
- Make a second copy of the current production database and
wp-contentbefore overwriting anything. - If using a managed restore, confirm the WordPress site is working and that the service connection is healthy. Jetpack’s documented restore process requires both.
3. Restore files
Use your backup tool’s file restore or replace the production wp-content with the selected archive through SFTP or the host’s file manager. Preserve permissions and directory paths. Files with the same names are typically overwritten; do not assume every newer file is removed. In Jetpack’s documented behavior, unique files are not removed, so inspect for stale extensions or uploads after the restore.
4. Restore the database
Import the selected SQL file with the host database tool or the managed service’s database restore. Expect existing tables to be replaced according to the tool’s procedure. Jetpack states: “However, it is important to note that your website’s database is completely replaced with the database from the backup you’re restoring from.” This is why newer orders and edits must be exported before the restore rather than expected to survive automatically.
5. Reconcile post-backup orders and edits
Compare the preserved export with the restored store. Re-enter or import only the records that are genuinely missing, and check for duplicate order numbers, stock movements, refunds, customer accounts, coupon usage, and payment captures. If an order was paid after the backup point, reconcile it with the payment gateway before changing its status. Do not blindly re-import a whole database over the restored snapshot.

- Verify prices, tax classes, shipping zones, stock quantities, backorders, and low-stock thresholds.
- Review payment and shipping integrations, API keys, webhooks, and callback URLs.
- Send test emails for a new order, processing order, completed order, refund, and password reset.
- Place one controlled test order, confirm payment or sandbox response, stock reduction, email delivery, and order status.
- Check analytics, feeds, subscriptions, search, customer login, and any external fulfillment connection.
After the site is stable, remove or protect temporary staging copies. If the incident involved malware, leaked credentials, or unauthorized access, rotate WordPress, hosting, database, SFTP, API, payment, and email credentials and investigate before declaring recovery complete.

Common failure modes and fixes
The restored site has products but no orders
This usually means only files or an XML export were restored. Import the matching SQL database backup, then verify that the database prefix and all extension tables were included in the export.
The site shows a database connection error
Check the database name, user, password, host, and table prefix in wp-config.php. Confirm the database server is online and that the restored user has privileges on every WordPress table.
Images or downloads return 404 errors
Confirm that the full wp-content/uploads tree and any protected download directories were copied. Check file permissions, attachment URLs, and the site URL after migration.
Checkout fails after restoration
Review HTTPS, payment credentials, webhook endpoints, tax and shipping settings, scheduled actions, cache, and extension compatibility with the restored WooCommerce version. Run a sandbox transaction rather than assuming a successful page load proves checkout works.
New orders disappeared
The selected database snapshot predates those orders. Restore does not automatically merge newer records. Use the export made before restoration, reconcile payment and stock changes, and document every manually recreated order.
Design a backup policy around acceptable data loss
Official documentation does not define one backup interval that fits every store, and it does not publish a universal recovery-time target. Choose a schedule by asking how many orders or edits the business could recreate manually and how long checkout can remain unavailable.
- Stores with frequent orders should use automated database and file backups with enough point-in-time depth to cover the busiest periods.
- Stores with infrequent catalog changes still need a current backup before every major update, migration, bulk import, or theme change.
- Keep retention long enough to cover delayed discovery of corruption; a backup made after corruption is not a clean recovery point.
- Perform a test restore on staging periodically. A backup is an assumption until a separate environment can open it and complete checkout.
Use separate credentials for backup storage, limit administrator access, enable multifactor authentication where available, and monitor whether scheduled jobs actually complete. Treat backup alerts as operational incidents rather than routine email.
