To back up one compatible Steam game, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, select Backup game files, choose a destination, and click Create Backup. When Steam finishes, use Open folder to inspect or copy the backup to other storage. This preserves the install files needed to reinstall the game; it does not automatically preserve every save, configuration file, or custom map.
What Steam’s backup feature actually saves
Steam’s built-in backup tool creates a portable copy of a game’s installation files. You can keep that copy on another internal volume, an external hard drive for game backups, an external SSD, or removable media, then use Steam’s restore command to install the game again without starting with an entirely fresh download.

The feature is not a complete computer-backup system. Steam separates the game content it distributes from files created while you play. A backup can therefore restore the program while leaving your progress, settings, screenshots, mods, and other personal data elsewhere. Plan those items separately before uninstalling or replacing a drive.

Check compatibility before creating a backup
Steam says its backup tool works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. A title that starts through Steam but uses a separate installer, downloader, launcher, or patching system may not be compatible. Steam specifically cautions that many games with third-party installers or downloaders, including many MMO-style and third-party free-to-play games, may not work with this feature.

If a game does not meet that requirement, do not assume that a folder produced by another copying method is a valid Steam backup. For a whole installation, preserving the library files or using Steam’s local transfer feature may be more appropriate, but those approaches have different purposes and limitations.
Back up one Steam game step by step
- Open Library. Start the Steam desktop client and display your installed games.
- Open the game’s properties. Right-click the game you own and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files. In the properties window, select Installed Files, then choose Backup game files.
- Choose a destination. Select the folder where Steam should build the backup. It can be on the current computer or on storage that you can access later.
- Create the backup. Select Create Backup and leave Steam running until the operation reports completion. Avoid interrupting the client or allowing another application to interfere with the process.
- Inspect and copy the result. Select Open folder when Steam offers it. Check that the expected backup files exist, then move or copy them to the storage location you will use for recovery.
Steam’s support guidance recommends testing backups after creation. A backup that merely appears in a folder has not yet proved that it can reinstall the game. If the files are important, perform a test restore while the original installation is still available or on another suitable Steam installation.
Where should the backup folder go?
Steam does not require a particular drive brand, interface, speed, or capacity. Choose a destination with enough free space for the games you select and keep it separate from the computer’s main drive if your concern is drive failure. An external hard drive or external SSD is optional, not a prerequisite; Steam also allows a normal folder that you later move or burn according to its support instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not treat the destination as protected merely because it is external. A single copy can still be lost, corrupted, or accidentally deleted. For a valuable library, keep another copy in a different location and test at least one restore.

What is included, and what must be copied separately?
Installation files
The backup contains the Steam-managed game files needed for the installation process. It is intended to recreate the installed title through Steam, not to archive every file associated with your account or computer.
Saved games
Steam explicitly says that backups of Valve-created games do not include saved games. For games made by other developers, save locations vary because each developer chooses where progress is stored. The files may be inside a game directory, in a user profile, in a documents folder, or in a cloud-synchronization location.
Before removing the original installation, find the save location in the game’s developer documentation or ask the developer. Copy those files independently and record where they belong. If cloud saves are available, do not assume that synchronization is a substitute for an offline copy: confirm that the latest progress has synchronized and retain a separate copy when the save matters.
Configuration files and custom content
Valve’s guidance also excludes configuration files and custom multiplayer maps from its game backups. For Valve games, Steam lists cfg, downloads, maps, materials, and SAVE folders as locations where custom files may live. If you use custom maps, graphics, scripts, or settings, copy the relevant folders separately and restore them to their corresponding locations after the game is installed again.

Third-party games can use entirely different folder names and file locations. Preserve only files you understand, and keep a note of the original path so that a later update does not place custom content in the wrong directory.
Restore a Steam game from a backup
- Install Steam. On the recovery computer, install the Steam client.
- Sign in to the owning account. Use the Steam account that owns the game. The backup contains installation data; it does not transfer ownership or bypass account checks.
- Open the restore command. In the Steam client, choose Steam > Restore Game Backup.
- Locate the backup. Browse to the directory containing the backup files and select it.
- Complete installation. Follow Steam’s prompts for the destination and installation process. Allow the client to finish before launching the game.
- Restore personal files. Copy your separately preserved saves, custom maps, and configuration files back to the locations used by that game.
Steam warns that restoration may fail when the Steam installation path contains special characters. Its example uses a path such as C:Steam安装路径Steam. If restoration repeatedly stops or cannot find the backup, use a simple path containing ordinary letters and numbers, then retry.
After the restore
Launch the game once without custom files if possible. This lets Steam and the game create any required folders. Then close the game and return the saved data and custom content to their documented locations. This staged approach makes it easier to tell whether a problem comes from the installation or from an incompatible custom file.

How to preserve every installed game before reinstalling Steam
If your objective is to keep a complete local library rather than make a portable backup of one title, Steam recommends using its Moving a Steam Installation method. Steam says that method saves time and simplifies backup and restore for all installed games.

When uninstalling Steam, Steam warns that the uninstall process removes the Steam client and installed game content. To preserve those files for a future Steam installation, move or copy the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. Keep the folder intact and place it somewhere the new installation can access.
Preserving steamapps is different from creating an independent, tested backup. It keeps a local installation available for a later move, but it is still one copy unless you duplicate it. It also does not automatically capture saves, configuration files, or custom content that live outside the folder. If the original drive is failing, copy the folder to healthy storage rather than leaving it on the same disk and calling that a backup.
Choose the method that matches your goal
| Goal | Best-fitting Steam method | What it does | Important exclusions or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep a portable copy of one supported game | Backup game files from Properties > Installed Files | Builds backup files that Steam can restore through Steam > Restore Game Backup | Only games fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam are supported; saves and many personal files are separate |
| Preserve an existing library during a Steam reinstall | Move or copy steamapps outside the Steam directory |
Keeps local game content available for a later Steam installation | Uninstalling Steam can remove installed content; this is not an independently tested second copy unless you make one |
| Reuse files on another PC at home | Steam Local Network Game Transfers | Copies game installation and update files between Steam clients on the same local network, reducing downloads from Steam content servers | Transfers do not include local saves or configuration files; speed depends on the network and the source computer |
Use Local Network Game Transfers when the other PC is nearby
Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers feature is separate from the backup tool. It is designed for two Steam clients on the same LAN. Instead of downloading existing installation and update data from Steam’s content servers, one client can send that data to the other. This can reduce internet use and may be faster, depending on the computers, storage, and network conditions.
A local transfer is a reuse mechanism, not an archival copy. Steam says local saves and configuration files are not sent. Copy those files separately if the second computer needs the same progress or settings. A transfer also does not protect against the failure of the original computer because the source remains part of the process; make an independent backup when recovery is the goal.

Troubleshoot common backup and restore problems
The backup option is missing or the game will not back up
First check whether the title uses a third-party installer, downloader, or patcher. Steam’s compatibility rule requires the game to download, install, and patch completely through Steam, and many MMO-style or third-party free-to-play titles do not meet that rule. Use a supported title for a test and preserve unsupported games through the developer’s documented method or by protecting the broader library files.
The backup process stops or produces an unusable copy
Steam warns that interruption or interference from other applications can prevent successful creation. Close programs that may lock or scan the destination, keep the client open, and let the process finish. Recreate the backup in a different folder if the destination is full, disconnected, or reporting file errors. Then test the new copy rather than relying on the failed one.
Steam cannot restore the files
Confirm that you selected the directory containing the actual backup files, not merely a parent folder that holds several unrelated items. Sign in to the account that owns the game, and check the Steam installation path for special characters. A simple installation path can avoid the failure Steam describes for paths containing characters such as those in C:Steam安装路径Steam.

Open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the installation with its expected files and can reacquire damaged or missing content. Steam notes that some files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Do not delete configuration files solely because verification reports them; determine whether they are personal or custom files first.
The game opens, but progress or custom maps are missing
That result is expected when only the installation backup was restored. Retrieve the separately copied save data and custom folders, then return them to the game’s documented locations. For a third-party title, consult its developer because Steam does not define a universal save path.
A practical backup plan for a Steam library
- Inventory the library. Mark which games are fully Steam-managed and which rely on another launcher or installer.
- Protect personal data first. For each important game, identify saves, screenshots, configuration files, mods, and custom maps that do not belong to the installation backup.
- Use the narrowest suitable method. Create a Steam backup for a portable copy of a supported title, preserve
steamappsfor a Steam move, or use a local transfer when two PCs share a LAN. - Keep copies on separate storage. A second drive or removable device protects against failure of the primary drive; a second physical location protects against loss of both devices.
- Test recovery. Restore at least one representative backup, launch it, and confirm that separately preserved saves and custom content can be returned.
- Document the arrangement. Record the game name, backup location, save-file location, and date so that recovery does not depend on memory.
Key limitations to remember
- The built-in tool saves installation files, not a complete profile of your game data.
- Compatibility depends on the title’s entire download, installation, and patch process being handled by Steam.
- Steam does not require a particular storage product or drive type for the destination.
- Restoring requires Steam and the account that owns the game.
- Special characters in the Steam installation path can prevent a restore from completing.
- Local Network Game Transfers move installation and update files, not local saves or configuration.
- Verification can report ordinary local configuration files; that report alone is not a reason to erase them.
Bottom line
For one supported title, Steam’s Backup game files command is the straightforward way to make a restorable copy: create it from the game’s Installed Files page, move the finished files to safe storage, and test a restore. Protect saves and custom content separately. For a complete installed library, preserve or copy steamapps using Steam’s installation-moving guidance; for another PC on the same home network, use Local Network Game Transfers to reuse installation files rather than treating the transfer as an archive.
