Turing Complete 2.0 is a ground-up rewrite, not simply an engine migration. The developer says the game moved from Godot to a proprietary engine while its levels and components were reimplemented, a compiler and custom assembly framework were added, and simulation was redesigned for much larger experiments. The cost for existing players is immediate: saves from the old version are incompatible with the rewrite.
What changed in Turing Complete 2.0?
The developer describes Turing Complete 2.0 as a broad technical rebuild. “Godot was replaced with our own game engine,” according to the official patch notes, but the change reaches well beyond rendering or tooling. The rewrite includes a custom compiler, a custom assembly framework, and reimplemented levels and components.

That foundation is intended to support a wider kind of game. In a February 23, 2025 status update, the developer said the project had expanded from a focused puzzle about how CPUs work into a “computer learning / creation / exploration platform.” The stated goal includes larger circuits, user-created campaigns, more realistic campaign material, and room for advanced processor ideas rather than only the original progression.

Variable-width components
Patch notes say almost all components support widths from 2 to 64 bits. That lets a circuit use a width appropriate to the problem instead of forcing every experiment into one fixed size. The notes do not claim that every component supports every width, so “almost all” is the relevant qualification.

A new assembler and custom compiler
The new assembler system is paired with a compiler designed to make custom levels practical and to reduce the simulation burden of increasingly complex designs. The developer says compiler development alone took over a year. That duration is the developer’s account, not an independently audited production record.
RAM, labels, hints and solutions
The update adds new RAM interactions, including a hex-editor mode and a punch-card mode. It also introduces pin labels, hints and solutions, making larger designs easier to inspect and learn from.

Testing and architecture changes
The patch notes describe a revised architecture and an exhaustive-testing capability for most levels at 16 bits or less. These tools matter because the rewritten game is aimed at construction and exploration as well as solving a fixed sequence of puzzles.
How much faster is the new simulation?
The developer claims that simulation speed is “100x faster.” The announcement does not provide benchmark methodology, hardware, workload, version pairing or comparison conditions, and no independent performance evaluation is established here. Treat 100x as the developer’s claim rather than a universally verified multiplier.

Why did the scope balloon?
The February 23, 2025 status update says the original direction no longer matched the developer’s ambitions. A computer-learning, creation and exploration platform needs an engine that can handle larger circuits, a compiler that can support custom content, and campaign material that reaches beyond introductory CPU operation.
The developer also cites a desire to avoid repeated save-breaking updates. Ironically, this rewrite itself breaks compatibility, but the stated objective is to establish a more flexible base so future expansion does not require the same kind of disruptive migration as often.

What the new vision is meant to enable
The developer presents Turing Complete 2.0 as a path toward user-created campaigns and more realistic lessons. The status update also names superscalar execution, pipelining and speculative execution as concepts the expanded campaign could address. Those are stated ambitions, not promises of specific release dates or a guarantee that every idea will ship in a particular form.

Old-version saves cannot be loaded by the new version. Anyone midway through the previous campaign should decide whether finishing that run matters more than accessing the rewrite’s new systems.

The announcement says players can switch to Steam’s old_version channel to remain on the previous release. It does not state how long that channel will remain available, so players should not assume indefinite access.
How to choose between the versions
- Choose the old version first if you have an unfinished campaign whose save you cannot replace and want uninterrupted continuity.
- Choose 2.0 first if you are starting fresh, want the new assembler and RAM tools, or are primarily interested in building and exploring beyond the original campaign structure.
- Back up anything important before switching branches. The compatibility break means a 2.0 installation should not be treated as a drop-in update for an old save.
What is established—and what is not
The developer has clearly documented the engine replacement, reimplemented content, compiler and assembly work, variable-width components, RAM modes, labels, hints, solutions and the save break. The same announcements establish the developer’s 100x simulation claim and long-term ambitions, but they do not provide neutral benchmark data, a delivery schedule for every planned CPU concept, or a stated end date for the old_version channel.
The patch-notes entry is labeled “14 Jul” in the accessible announcement extract without a visible year. Current pricing, regional availability, supported platforms and any independent technical assessment are therefore not established by the available announcement material.
