How to Back Up Your PlayStation VR Game Library and Saves (PS4, PS5 and PS VR2)

Back up the save according to the format of the game, not merely the headset you use. Original PlayStation VR games are generally PS4-format titles, so their progress can be copied to a compatible USB drive or stored in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. PS VR2 is a separate PS5 platform; it cannot play original PS VR content, and PS5-format saves cannot be copied to USB. Use cloud storage for PS5 saves. Keep installed game files separate from saved progress: USB extended storage holds applications and add-ons, not PS4 save files. The safest workflow is to identify the game and console version first, make a selective save copy or cloud upload, and use a full PS4 backup only when you need a broader console snapshot.

Identify the VR platform and game version first

The label on the headset is not enough to choose a backup method. The deciding factor is whether the game uses the PS4 or PS5 save format and which console currently runs it.

Platform or format Where it runs Save-backup options Important boundary
Original PlayStation VR (PS VR) PS4 titles; some supported configurations also run on PS5 USB copy for PS4-format saves, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage Do not assume a PS4 save transfers into a separate PS5 remake or upgrade
PS VR2 PS5 PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5-format saves It has no compatibility with original PS VR content
PS4-format game played on PS5 PS5 running the PS4 version Copy the PS4 save to USB or use PlayStation Plus cloud storage Use the PS4 save menus, not the PS5-save menu
PS5-format game PS5 PlayStation Plus cloud storage Sony does not provide a USB-copy route for PS5 saved data

Sony’s compatibility documentation states that there is no compatibility between PlayStation VR and PS VR2. A PS VR2 headset therefore does not turn an original PS VR game into a PS5 game, and reinstalling a title does not change its save format. Check the game tile, product page, or in-game version label before you start.

Choose the backup that matches what you want to protect

There are four different jobs people call a “backup”: preserving selected save files, keeping cloud copies, imaging an entire PS4, and storing installed game applications. They have different requirements and restore consequences.

Goal Data format Method PlayStation Plus needed? Restore scope
Protect a few PS VR game saves locally PS4-format saved data Copy selected files to a normal compatible USB storage device No membership is required for the local copy Selected saves can be copied back to console storage
Protect PS4 or PS5 saves off the console PS4- or PS5-format saved data PlayStation Plus cloud storage Yes Download or sync saves; choose the game files you need
Create a complete PS4 snapshot PS4 console data Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up No membership is required for the external backup Restoring replaces data on the PS4 and erases its current contents
Keep installed games ready to play Applications and add-ons USB extended storage No membership is required for the drive itself Applications remain installed; saves are not included

For most players, a selective USB copy is the simplest protection for an original PS VR title running in PS4 format. Cloud storage is the option that covers PS5-format games. A full PS4 backup is broader but should be treated as a console replacement procedure, not as a casual save export.

Copy PS4-format PS VR saves to a USB drive

Use this route for an original PS VR game that stores its progress as PS4 saved data. The USB device must be a normal compatible storage device. Do not format it as USB extended storage for this task: extended storage is reserved for applications and add-ons and will not accept PS4 application saves.

On a PS4 console

  1. Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the saved data. PlayStation’s save-copy procedure requires you to be signed in.
  2. Connect the compatible USB storage device directly to the PS4.
  3. Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
  4. Select the PS VR game, then select the save files you want to preserve. If the game has several profiles or slots, review each file name before copying.
  5. Wait for the copy to finish before removing the drive. Ejecting or disconnecting storage during a write can leave the backup incomplete.

Restore a PS4 save to another PS4

  1. Sign in on the destination PS4 with the account associated with the save.
  2. Insert the USB storage device.
  3. Open the saved-data management area and choose the option to copy data from the USB storage device to system storage.
  4. Select the game and files to restore, then allow the operation to complete before launching the game.

A USB save copy is selective: it protects the files you choose, not screenshots, settings, installed applications, or the entire console. Keep the drive labeled with the game and date so you know which version of a save it contains.

On a PS5 running the PS4 version

PS5 can copy PS4-format saved data to USB, which is useful when an original PS VR title is being played through a supported PS4 configuration on PS5.

  1. Connect a compatible USB storage device that is not configured as USB extended storage for applications.
  2. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Copy to USB Drive.
  3. Select the game and save files, then confirm the copy.
  4. To restore, return to the same area and choose Copy or Delete from USB Drive, select the files, and copy them to console storage.

This menu is specifically for PS4-format saves. Do not use it for a PS5-format PS VR2 title; the PS5 save system does not expose those files for USB copying.

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 and PS5 saves

PlayStation Plus cloud storage supports both PS4 and PS5 saved data. It is the required backup path for PS5-format saves because Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to USB.

Open the correct save menu on PS5

  1. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  2. Choose Saved Data (PS4) when the game is an original PS VR or other PS4-format title.
  3. Choose Saved Data (PS5) for a PS VR2 or other native PS5 title.
  4. Use the upload, download, and synchronization controls for the selected format and game.

Enable automatic sync or upload if you want the console to keep cloud copies without a manual visit to the menu. Before relying on a backup, check the displayed sync status and the time of the latest upload. A cloud icon alone is not proof that the newest local progress has finished uploading.

Important PS4-on-PS5 behavior

PlayStation states that PS4 saves upload automatically for supported cloud use on PS5, but they must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage before the game can use them there. If a PS4-format PS VR game appears to have lost progress after moving to PS5, open the Saved Data (PS4) controls and download the relevant files instead of launching a new game and overwriting local data.

Published cloud limits

The current official PlayStation support page accessed in 2026 lists these limits: 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. The page does not display a publication date, so these figures should be treated as the limits stated on that page when you check it, not as a dated promise that cannot change.

Cloud category Limit stated by PlayStation support Applies to
PS5 saved data 100 GB Native PS5 games, including PS VR2 titles
PS4 saved data 100 GB Original PS VR and other PS4-format games
PS4 saved-data file count Up to 1,000 files PS4 saved-data files in cloud storage

Cloud capacity is separate from the size of installed games. Uploading a small save does not preserve the game application itself, and deleting a local installation does not delete a valid cloud copy unless you remove that cloud data.

Make a full PS4 console backup when you need more than saves

A full PS4 backup can include saved data, installed games and apps, screenshots and video clips, and system settings. It is appropriate before replacing a console or making a major reset when you want a broad snapshot rather than a few game files.

Prepare the external drive

  • Use an external USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Ensure it has at least twice the storage space of the backup file the PS4 will create.
  • Do not interrupt the console while it is writing the backup.

Start the backup

  1. Connect the prepared drive to the PS4.
  2. Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
  3. Choose the data categories when prompted and start the operation.
  4. Leave the PS4 powered on until it confirms completion, then disconnect the drive safely.

Understand the restore warning

Sony’s PS4 backup documentation warns: “When restoring data, your PS4 console erases all data saved on your console.” That includes data currently on the destination console, and the erasure still occurs even if you cancel the restore. Use this method only when you have verified the destination and are prepared to replace its contents. A selective USB save copy or cloud download is safer when you only need one game’s progress.

Keep installed game files separate from saved progress

USB extended storage is designed for game applications and add-ons. It does not store PS4 application saved data, so moving an installed PS VR game to extended storage does not create a save backup.

What extended storage can do

  • Hold installed PS4 or PS5 game applications and add-ons supported by the console.
  • Free internal console space while keeping the installation available for later use.
  • Reduce the need to redownload an application when moving between compatible consoles that recognize the drive.

What it cannot do for saves

  • It cannot hold PS4 application saved data as a substitute for the PS4 save-copy menu.
  • It cannot hold PS5 saved data for USB backup.
  • It does not preserve account-specific progress merely because the game application remains installed.

PS5 games placed on USB extended storage must be copied back to PS5 console storage or compatible M.2 storage before they can be played. Plan space for that move if you are preparing a PS VR2 library for use after a storage change.

Redownload the game separately from restoring its save

Digital purchases can be downloaded again from the console’s game library after you sign in. That restores the application, not the player’s progress. A fresh download starts with whatever local or cloud save the console can find; it does not reconstruct a deleted save from the purchase record.

For a physical disc, the disc remains the license needed to install or launch the title, while the saved-data procedure is unchanged. In either case, protect the save with USB or cloud storage before deleting local data, changing accounts, or initializing a console.

Use the right route for common migration situations

Situation Recommended sequence What to verify
PS4 running an original PS VR game, moving to another PS4 Copy the game’s PS4 save to a normal USB drive, then copy it to the destination PS4; cloud storage is an alternative Use the same account and select the correct game files
PS4-format PS VR game being played on PS5 Use Saved Data (PS4) and either copy to USB or download from PlayStation Plus cloud Download the cloud save manually to PS5 storage before playing
Native PS5 or PS VR2 game moving between PS5 consoles Upload and download through PlayStation Plus cloud storage USB copying is not available for PS5 saved data
Replacing a PS4 and wanting settings, captures, apps, and saves together Create a full PS4 backup, then restore it on the replacement console The restore erases data already on the destination PS4
Freeing internal space without deleting a game download Move the application or add-ons to USB extended storage The move does not include saved progress; PS5 games must return to console or M.2 storage to play

There is no universal rule that converts a PS4 VR save into a separate PS5 release, remake, or upgraded edition. Transfer support is determined by the individual game. Read that title’s own transfer instructions before deleting the original installation or starting the new edition.

Check the backup before you trust it

A backup is useful only if it can be identified and restored. Run these checks immediately after making one:

  • Confirm the game name and PS4 or PS5 format in the destination menu.
  • Check the USB copy’s completion message or the cloud menu’s latest-upload time.
  • For a cloud copy, verify that the account and PlayStation Plus membership are active on the console you will use for download.
  • For a USB copy, keep the drive in a safe place and avoid reformatting it as extended storage.
  • If you made a full PS4 backup, record the date and the console it came from; do not test-restore it on a console containing newer data.
  • After moving to a new console, download or copy the save before launching the game for the first time, so a new blank save cannot become the newest local version.

Troubleshoot the most common backup mistakes

The game is missing from the USB-copy list

Check whether you opened the PS4-save menu and whether the title is actually running in PS4 format. A PS5-format game will not appear as USB-copyable saved data. Also confirm that the drive is a normal compatible USB device rather than one assigned to extended storage.

The save appears in cloud storage but the game starts from the beginning

On PS5, open the menu for the correct format and manually download the PS4 or PS5 save to console storage. Automatic upload does not always mean that a local download has occurred. Confirm the account, game edition, and latest upload time before starting a new save.

The full backup will not start

Check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and has at least twice the capacity of the backup file. A drive configured as extended storage for applications is not the same preparation as a PS4 full-backup drive.

The game is installed but progress is gone

Installation and saved data are independent. Reinstall or redownload the application, then restore the save through PS4 USB copy or PlayStation Plus cloud storage according to its format.

A PS4 save does not work in a PS5 version

Do not assume that a platform upgrade, remake, or separate PS5 product accepts the original save. Look for the game publisher’s transfer instructions; compatibility is title-specific and no universal transfer rule is established.

A practical backup routine for a PS VR library

  1. Make a list of the games you play and mark each one as PS4-format or PS5-format.
  2. For PS4-format originals, make a selective USB copy before a console reset or account change; optionally enable cloud upload as a second copy.
  3. For PS5-format PS VR2 titles, enable PlayStation Plus synchronization and confirm the latest upload after a play session you cannot afford to lose.
  4. Use extended storage only for installed applications and add-ons, never as the save archive.
  5. Reserve a full PS4 backup for a complete console move, and keep a separate selective save copy if you need a quick recovery.
  6. When changing consoles, restore or download saves before launching the game, then verify the progress in-game before deleting the original copy.

This separation—PS4 versus PS5 save format, local versus cloud copy, and installed application versus saved progress—prevents the most expensive mistake: believing a game is backed up because its download or extended-storage installation still exists.
