Run SkyWars on a Minecraft Java Edition dedicated server built on Paper (preferred) or Spigot, then add a version-matched SkyWars plugin, WorldEdit, WorldGuard, and every dependency that plugin lists. Choose the server architecture first
SkyWars plugins are Bukkit plugins, so they cannot run on the vanilla Minecraft server. Use Minecraft Java Edition with a dedicated server implementation that exposes the Bukkit API. Paper is the practical first choice: WorldEdit’s documentation recommends Paper over Spigot because Paper includes improvements WorldEdit can use. Spigot is also compatible with Bukkit plugins, including WorldEdit, WorldGuard and SkyWars implementations.

Install matching builds for the Minecraft version you actually run; a plugin compiled for a different server version can fail during startup or behave unpredictably in a match.
Prepare a clean server instance
- Choose the exact Minecraft version and a Paper or Spigot build for that version.
- Install Java appropriate for that Minecraft release and confirm the server starts from the command line.
- Start the server once, accept the EULA when required, and stop it cleanly. The first launch creates the world,
pluginsdirectory and configuration folders. - Keep a separate staging copy. Do initial plugin installation, map construction and permission testing there instead of on a public server.
Do not copy plugin JAR files while the server is running. Stop the server, copy files, then restart and read the console from the beginning. Save the startup log whenever you change a plugin; dependency and version errors are much easier to diagnose from the first exception than from an in-game symptom.

Pick a SkyWars plugin that matches your version
There is no universal SkyWars command set. Different projects use different dependencies, arena formats and reset methods. Select a release whose page explicitly supports your Minecraft and Paper or Spigot version, and follow that release’s documented commands rather than combining instructions from another project.

The difference between these listings is operational, not cosmetic. A configuration written for a MinigamesLib-based plugin may have no meaning to a newer implementation, while a newer implementation may refuse to start without ProtocolLib or Slime World Manager. Install only the dependencies named by the release you selected, and use one SkyWars implementation at a time until you have verified that its commands and data folders are working.

- Launch the server once. Start Paper or Spigot with your normal Java command, allow it to create its files, then stop it with the console
stopcommand. A clean shutdown prevents world and configuration corruption. - Stage the JAR files. Place the version-matched SkyWars plugin, WorldEdit, WorldGuard and every dependency named by the SkyWars release in the server’s
pluginsdirectory. For an economy reward system, include Vault and the economy provider required by your chosen setup. - Restart and inspect the console. Look for messages that each plugin enabled successfully. A missing dependency, duplicate plugin, unsupported Minecraft version or API error must be fixed before you create an arena.
- Confirm generated folders. WorldEdit, WorldGuard and the SkyWars plugin should create their configuration directories. If a directory is missing, do not assume the plugin is ready; check its startup error first.
- Stop before editing configuration. Change YAML or JSON files only while the server is stopped unless the plugin explicitly documents a safe reload command. Many minigame settings are read when the plugin starts or when an arena is loaded.
Never mix builds across Minecraft versions. Updating the server, SkyWars plugin, WorldEdit, WorldGuard or a dependency is a compatibility change, not a routine file replacement. Back up the current installation before each change.
Build the SkyWars arena
Lay out islands for the intended mode
Construct or import a map with floating player islands, a central island and bridges or routes that create meaningful choices. Leave enough empty space for the void to be a real hazard, but keep permanent structures inside a boundary you can protect and regenerate. WorldEdit runs on Java dedicated servers and can copy, paste and restore large structures far faster than hand editing.
Design the map around the plugin’s supported mode. A solo arena needs one starting island per player slot. A team arena needs one starting position per team, with enough room for the configured players on that team. Do not create ten solo spawns and then switch the arena to teams without checking how the plugin interprets those locations; some plugins count spawns, while others count teams and assign players internally.
Keep a pristine source copy
Save an untouched source world or schematic before any match begins. The source must include the islands, chests that are meant to be permanent, barriers, signs and decorative structures. A reset system can then restore the playable world after a match. If your plugin uses temporary world copies, keep the source world read-only for ordinary players and never use it as the live arena.

Test restoration with blocks that players can place and break, containers they can open, and damage caused by explosions or the void. A reset that only replaces visible islands can leave behind changed inventories, opened chests, dropped items or altered region data.
Create a separate lobby
Put the waiting lobby outside the active arena world or in a clearly separated location. Provide a main server lobby for players who are not selecting an arena, and an arena waiting lobby where the plugin can show the player count and countdown. Add a spectator or post-game location if the plugin supports one; otherwise, define a safe return point that cannot expose eliminated players to an active round.
Define spawns and arena commands
Every player slot needs a deliberate spawn. Place each location on a safe block with enough headroom, face players toward the island or center, and check that adjacent spawns cannot collide when the match starts. Record the number of locations and compare it with the arena’s maximum player count.
One current Spigot listing documents these creation forms:
/sw setup arena create only <world_name> <arena_name>creates a solo arena.- The team form accepts a players-per-team value; use the syntax from that release and verify the resulting team count in its confirmation message.
/sw setup lobby setlocationrecords the waiting-lobby location.
Those commands belong to the implementation that documents them; they are not a universal API. A MinigamesLib-based plugin instead documents /sw setmainlobby, /sw setlobby [arena] and repeated /sw setspawn [arena] commands. Run the command from the correct world, and verify in the plugin’s arena data that the location was saved.
Configure player limits and countdowns
Set minimum players high enough to make a round viable and maximum players no higher than the number of valid spawns. Configure a pre-game countdown, a grace period if the plugin offers one, and the behavior when a player disconnects before the countdown completes. Decide whether an arena should start immediately when its minimum is reached or wait for an administrator trigger.

Set permissions for joining, creating arenas, editing kits and forcing a game to end. Test each command with an ordinary player account. If it works only for an operator, fix the permission node rather than granting operator status to users.
Configure chests, loot and kits
Place and tier the chests
Put starting chests on each island and stronger or more varied chests in the center. Assign every chest to a tier recognized by the plugin, then define the loot table for that tier. Check that a chest is associated with the correct arena rather than the lobby or source world.

Configure whether loot is generated when the match starts, when a chest is first opened or when the arena is reset. Set a refill interval only if the game design needs one; a refill that occurs during a decisive late-game fight can change the intended pace. Test several resets to ensure items are not duplicated between rounds and that empty chests do not remain empty after a new game begins.
Set kits and permissions
Choose whether players receive a default kit, select from an allowed menu or obtain kits through permissions. Keep starter equipment consistent with the island distance and chest strength. A kit that grants blocks, weapons or projectiles can invalidate the map’s intended progression, so test it alongside the chest tables rather than in isolation.
Restrict administrative kits and editing commands to staff. If the plugin supports per-arena kit restrictions, apply them before opening the arena and confirm that a player cannot carry a kit from one mode into another.
Define joining, elimination and winning
Decide how players enter games: commands, signs, NPCs or a queue from any world. One SkyWars implementation describes queueing players from any world and returning them to their original location after the game. That behavior is useful when selecting a plugin, especially on a server where players may join from survival or creative worlds. Verify the return location with an account that joins from each world you support.

Configure what happens when a player falls into the void or is otherwise eliminated. The plugin should remove the player from active combat, preserve a spectator view if supported, and prevent eliminated players from sending items or information into the round. Set the spectator spawn above or beside the map, with interaction restricted so spectators cannot place, break or open containers.
Set the win condition explicitly: normally the last surviving player or team. Configure the winner message, rewards and the command or timer that ends the game. Economy rewards should be enabled only after Vault and the required economy provider are installed and configured. Confirm that a disconnect does not incorrectly award a win or leave an arena in a permanently running state.
Protect the lobby and permanent structures with WorldGuard
- Install the Bukkit-compatible WorldEdit build first.
- Install the WorldGuard build that matches the server version, place its JAR in
plugins, and start the server. WorldGuard creates per-world configuration files under its own directory on startup. - Use WorldEdit to select the lobby, portals, spectator area and any permanent map structures, then create protected regions with WorldGuard.
- Set flags that prevent unauthorized building, breaking, container access and other lobby damage. Keep temporary arena block changes under the SkyWars plugin’s control where the game requires players to place and break blocks.
- Check region priorities. A broad world or lobby region can override a smaller arena region if priorities are wrong, preventing legitimate gameplay or allowing damage in a protected area.
WorldGuard should protect the waiting area and permanent infrastructure without fighting the minigame’s temporary rules. Test region interaction in a staging world: place and break blocks during a live round, open a chest, enter the spectator area and attempt each action again after elimination.
Run a complete pre-launch test
Use at least one administrator account and ordinary non-operator accounts. A successful administrator test proves very little because operators bypass many permission checks.
- Join from the main lobby and from any supported external world. Confirm that the queue or join command places the player in the correct waiting lobby.
- Fill the arena to its minimum and verify the countdown, maximum-player limit and cancellation behavior when someone leaves.
- Start a solo round and check that every participant appears on a distinct island. Repeat with a team round if team mode is enabled, confirming team assignment and spawn spacing.
- Open each chest tier and verify the intended loot, refill timing and kit restrictions.
- Place and break blocks where the game allows it. Attempt the same actions in the lobby and spectator area to confirm protection.
- Fall into the void or eliminate a test player. Confirm damage, elimination, spectator behavior and interaction restrictions.
- Finish the game and verify the winner message, reward behavior and return to the configured lobby or original location.
- Regenerate or reload the arena, then run a second match. Inspect the islands, chests, containers, dropped items and region flags for leftovers from the first game.
Read the server console after startup and after each test match. Look for dependency failures, permission warnings, world-loading errors and serialization exceptions. A game that appears to finish correctly can still leave a reset task running, a world copy mounted, or an arena marked as occupied.

The plugin does not enable
Stop the server and read the first error involving the SkyWars JAR. Check the Minecraft version, Paper or Spigot build, Java version and every dependency named by the release. Remove duplicate or obsolete plugin builds, install the required ProtocolLib, Slime World Manager, MinigamesLib or Vault component for that specific implementation, and restart. Do not solve an API error by copying random versions from another plugin guide.

Commands are unknown or have different syntax
Confirm which SkyWars implementation is installed and use its own command list. The MinigamesLib-based commands and the newer setup commands are different systems. Check command permissions with a staff account, then test the same command with a non-operator after granting only the documented permission node.

Verify the arena world, the saved spawn count and the arena mode. Recreate any location recorded while standing in a lobby or source world. Check that the maximum player count does not exceed valid spawns and that team settings match the number of starting locations.
Blocks or chests remain changed after a match
Confirm that the plugin has a reset or world-regeneration method configured and that the source world or schematic is untouched. Look for world-save, serialization or region-priority errors in the console. Run the second-match test after every reset change; visual inspection before a new match can miss altered container contents or hidden blocks.
Players can grief the lobby or spectators
Recheck WorldGuard region selection and priorities, then test with a non-operator. Ensure the protected region covers portals, waiting pads, signs and spectator paths. Keep arena regions separate so lobby flags do not prevent legal block placement during a game.
Maintain the minigame safely
Back up worlds, plugin configuration, arena schematics and generated SkyWars data before upgrading anything. Upgrade on a copy first, run both solo and team tests, and inspect the console through startup, countdown, elimination, reset and shutdown. Treat a Minecraft, Paper, SkyWars, WorldEdit, WorldGuard or dependency upgrade as a compatibility event.

Keep a short change log containing the server version, plugin build, dependency versions and date of each test. When a future failure appears, you can identify the last compatibility change instead of rebuilding the arena from memory. Retain the original source map so a bad regeneration or migration can be rolled back without losing the arena.
Launch checklist
- Paper or Spigot is running the selected Minecraft Java Edition version.
- WorldEdit, WorldGuard, the SkyWars plugin and all documented dependencies enable without console errors.
- The main lobby, arena waiting lobby, player spawns and spectator location are saved.
- Solo and team settings match the number and placement of islands.
- Chest tiers, loot, refill timing, kits, permissions and win rewards have been tested.
- Lobby, portal and spectator regions block unauthorized actions without disabling legal arena gameplay.
- Void elimination, spectating, winner handling, return locations and arena reset work for ordinary players.
- A second match starts from a clean arena, and backups of the world and configuration are available.
Once every item passes on the staging copy, migrate the tested configuration and source map to the public server. Keep the staging instance available for the next version upgrade or map edit.
