Ubisoft service closures are not one universal event: the affected game, platform and online features determine what changes. Check Ubisoft’s current decommissioning entry for your exact title first. For an accessible Ubisoft Connect PC save, close the game and launcher, copy the relevant folder from C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames to a separate location, and keep the original untouched. Cloud synchronization is useful for supported PC games, but it is synchronization—not an independently retained backup.
Start with the exact game, platform and feature being retired
Do not treat an announcement about one Ubisoft title as a promise about every Ubisoft save. The current decommissioning list identifies affected title-and-platform combinations and the functions that end. A legacy notice says that most listed closures remove online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, and retired Units and Challenges while offline features remain available. Its indexed entries include a PC service date of 30 June 2026 for affected titles; that date belongs to those entries, not to Ubisoft games generally.

A separate Ubisoft announcement dated 27 October 2023 used this qualification: “Rest assured that the decommissioning of online services will only affect certain online functionalities; if you purchased these games, you will still be able to play them.” Apply that statement only to the games and platforms covered by the announcement. Neither notice should be read as a universal guarantee that cloud synchronization, cross-progression or every online-dependent save feature will continue.
- Write down the game’s exact name, edition and platform (for example, Ubisoft Connect PC, another PC storefront, PlayStation or Xbox).
- Open Ubisoft’s current decommissioning notice and find that exact title/platform entry.
- Record which functions are listed as ending and the stated date. An online feature shutdown is not automatically a save-export deadline.
- Open the game’s own Ubisoft Help page for platform-specific save and restore information.
If your game or platform is not listed, do not infer that its services or cloud saves are ending. If it is listed, do not infer that every save-management option disappears on the same date. The title-specific notice is the authority for the scope of the shutdown.

Know which kind of “backup” you are making
There are three different ways a player may be able to retain progress. They have different ownership, failure modes and platform limits.
| Method | What it provides | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ubisoft Connect cloud synchronization | Keeps supported PC game data synchronized through the launcher. | Available only for supported Ubisoft Connect PC games and enabled by default for those games. It is not a separate offline copy that you control. |
| Copied local PC save folder | A separate copy of the files currently on your computer. | Applies to an accessible PC save. The default location and folder structure can vary by game or installation. |
| Windows File History | An earlier version of a saved-game folder, when File History was configured to capture it. | It is a Windows restore source, not proof that every Ubisoft game or platform supports the same backup method. |
A removable drive is simply one possible place to keep the copied folder. It does not export a cloud-only save and does not create a console-save backup. Use storage that will remain available if the computer’s internal drive fails, and keep the original folder until you have verified the copy.
Back up an Ubisoft Connect PC save folder
These steps are for a save that exists in the Ubisoft Connect PC file structure. They are not instructions for console storage or for a game whose files live somewhere else.
1. Finish the current session cleanly
Save in the game normally, return to a safe point if the title requires one, and quit to the desktop. Then exit Ubisoft Connect completely rather than leaving it running in the notification area. Closing both programs prevents a file from being copied while the game or launcher is writing it.
2. Open the default save location
In File Explorer, enter:
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames
Ubisoft documents this as the default Ubisoft Connect PC savegames folder. A different installation, a title-specific arrangement or a missing folder can produce a different result. If this path is absent, stop rather than creating an empty replacement and consult the game’s Ubisoft Help page.

3. Identify your account folder
Inside savegames, look for a long account-ID folder. The game’s data is normally inside a subfolder beneath that account folder. Do not assume that the first folder you see belongs to the game you want; an account may contain multiple titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Find the game subfolder
Use the game-specific support information to confirm which subfolder corresponds to the title. Folder contents and naming can vary. If you cannot identify it confidently, copy the complete account-ID folder instead of guessing and deleting unrelated data later.
5. Copy, do not move
Right-click the relevant game folder (or the confirmed account folder), choose the normal Windows copy command, and paste it to a separate location such as another internal volume or an external drive. A copy leaves the working save in place; a move would remove it from the location the game expects.
6. Verify the backup before changing settings
Open the destination and confirm that it contains files and the expected subfolders. Check the folder’s modified date so you know it reflects the session you just closed. Keep the original folder in its Ubisoft location. Do not rename, edit or replace it until you have decided which copy is authoritative.
7. Make a second dated copy when the progress matters
For a long campaign, create another copy after a major milestone and add a date to the destination folder name. This gives you more than one recovery point if a later session becomes corrupted. The date describes your own copy; it is not an Ubisoft service deadline.
Check cloud synchronization without confusing it with a backup
For supported Ubisoft Connect PC games, Ubisoft says cloud synchronization is available and enabled by default. In Ubisoft Connect PC, open your profile, choose Settings, then General to find the synchronization setting. A setting being enabled means the launcher may synchronize supported save data; it does not mean you have a separately retained copy that can be inspected or restored independently.

Keep your local folder copy before turning synchronization off, signing out, reinstalling the launcher or troubleshooting a conflict. Turning synchronization off by itself does not make a backup. If the game is not one of the supported PC titles, the setting may not apply at all.
Cloud status also does not change the shutdown scope for a title. A game can retain offline play while particular online services end, and the notices do not establish that cloud synchronization remains available for every affected game. Verify the title/platform entry and the game’s support page rather than relying on the launcher toggle.
Handle a local-versus-cloud prompt deliberately
After a connection problem, reinstall or file change, Ubisoft Connect may ask whether to use a local save or a cloud save. Do not click through the prompt automatically. The two versions can represent different moments in your playthrough, and the cloud copy is not inherently newer or safer.

- Which copy contains the latest progress you actually want?
- Does the local copy open correctly when the game is run with synchronization paused?
- Did you make a dated folder copy before starting the repair?
- Is one option clearly associated with the session in which progress was lost?
Ubisoft’s documented corrupted-cloud-save procedure is conservative: disable synchronization, make or retain the intended local save, exit, re-enable synchronization, and then choose the local save when prompted to replace the corrupted cloud copy. Selecting that local option in this recovery flow overwrites the corrupted cloud version. Choose it only when the local files contain the progress you want. If the cloud version is the one you need, preserve the local folder first and do not select an overwrite option until you have another copy.
Restore a copied PC save
Restore only after making a fresh copy of the current folder. That current state may be the only way back if the older backup is incomplete.
- Exit the game and Ubisoft Connect.
- Rename the current game folder in the
savegameslocation rather than deleting it. The rename keeps a rollback copy while you test the restore. - Copy the backed-up folder into the same account-and-game location documented for the title. Preserve the folder structure and filenames.
- Start the game with synchronization still disabled if you are testing a local-versus-cloud issue. Confirm that the expected progress loads.
- Only after confirming the correct progress should you re-enable synchronization and respond to any replacement prompt.
Ubisoft’s PC restore guidance also recognizes backups made with Windows File History. If File History captured the save folder, use Windows’ restore controls to recover the earlier version, then follow the same close, preserve and verify sequence. A File History entry is useful only if it actually contains the game’s save files; its existence does not prove that every Ubisoft title stores saves in the default path.

What console players and non-standard PC installs should do
Do not copy the PC path to a console and do not assume that a console cloud service can be exported to a USB drive. The information above establishes a Ubisoft Connect PC folder and PC cloud-sync setting, not one universal console procedure.
For PlayStation, Xbox, another PC storefront or a title whose save directory is not under Ubisoft Connect, use the exact game/platform entry in Ubisoft’s decommissioning notice and the game’s support page. Look specifically for instructions about local save export, platform cloud storage, cross-progression and what remains playable offline. If those pages do not describe an export method, the available evidence does not support promising one.
Shutdown-day checklist
- Scope checked: You recorded the exact game, platform and affected features from the current Ubisoft notice.
- PC folder preserved: You copied the relevant account/game folder from the documented path, or confirmed that your title uses another location.
- Copy verified: The destination contains files and remains separate from the working folder.
- Cloud understood: You know whether the title is a supported Ubisoft Connect PC game and have not mistaken synchronization for an offline backup.
- Conflict plan ready: You will preserve the current local folder before choosing either side of a local/cloud prompt.
- Platform caveat recorded: If you play on console or another storefront, you have not applied the PC instructions without title-specific confirmation.
Keep the dated copy until you have launched the game and confirmed the desired progress after any service change. Do not discard it merely because the launcher signs in successfully; sign-in and save restoration are separate questions.
Common failure modes and safe responses
| Symptom | Likely issue | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The default folder is missing. | The game uses another location, the installation differs, or no local save has been created. | Do not invent a folder. Check the title’s Ubisoft Help page and confirm the platform. |
| The backup folder is empty. | The wrong account/game folder was copied or the copy occurred while files were still in use. | Close both programs, identify the account and game subfolders again, and verify files before proceeding. |
| The launcher asks local or cloud. | The two stores are out of sync or one copy may be damaged. | Preserve the current local folder, compare wanted progress, then choose deliberately. |
| The restored save does not appear. | The folder was placed at the wrong account/game level, the title uses another format, or synchronization replaced it. | Exit, retain the restored and current folders, recheck the game-specific path, and test locally before enabling synchronization. |
| The game remains playable after a listed closure. | The notice may retire only specified online functions. | Continue using offline features that the title-specific notice says remain available, without assuming cloud services continue. |
What the shutdown notices do—and do not—tell you
The notices answer whether specified online functions for a listed title and platform are being decommissioned. They do not provide a universal save-export deadline, a universal cloud-retention promise or a single procedure for every platform. That is why the safest sequence is always: identify the exact entry, preserve a copy you can access, and then resolve any synchronization choice with that copy available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I back up my Ubisoft game saves?
If the save is accessible in Ubisoft Connect PC, close the game and launcher, then copy the relevant folder from C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames to a separate location. The save is under a long account-ID folder and a game folder. Verify the copied folder contains files and keep the original. If the path is missing or you play on console, check the game’s platform-specific Ubisoft Help page instead of applying the PC steps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Ubisoft’s service shutdown mean my save will be deleted?
Not automatically. Ubisoft’s decommission notices are specific to titles, platforms and features. The legacy notice says most listed closures affect online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, and retired Units and Challenges while offline features remain available. Check your exact entry: this does not establish that every cloud-save or cross-progression feature will continue, nor does it say every save is deleted.

Is Ubisoft Connect cloud synchronization the same as backing up my save?
No. Ubisoft says synchronization is available only for supported Ubisoft Connect PC games and is enabled by default for those titles. It synchronizes data through the launcher, rather than giving you a separate offline copy under your control. Keep a local copy before changing synchronization settings or resolving a save conflict.
Where are Ubisoft Connect PC save files stored?
Ubisoft documents the default location as C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames. Under it, look for a long account-ID folder and then the game folder. Paths and contents can vary by game or installation. If you cannot confirm the correct folder, consult that game’s support page; do not create an empty folder and assume it is the save.
Should I choose the local save or the cloud save in a conflict prompt?
Choose based on which copy contains the progress you want, not on an assumption that cloud is newer or safer. Preserve the current local folder first, then compare the versions. In Ubisoft’s documented corrupted-cloud recovery procedure, choosing the intended local save replaces the corrupted cloud copy. Treat that as an overwrite decision and proceed only if the local version is the one to keep.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I use Windows File History to restore an Ubisoft save?
Ubisoft’s PC restore guidance recognizes backups made with Windows File History. It helps only if File History actually captured the game’s save folder. Confirm the game-specific location, preserve the current folder, and verify the restored files and progress before allowing synchronization to replace anything.
Can I copy an Ubisoft save to a USB drive or back up a console save this way?
A USB flash drive or external drive can hold a copy of an accessible local PC save folder, but Ubisoft’s PC instructions do not establish a universal console export process or a way to export a cloud-only save. Console players should check the exact game and platform support information for the relevant save and platform-cloud options.
Is 30 June 2026 the deadline to back up every Ubisoft game?
No. That date appears for affected entries in Ubisoft’s legacy decommissioning notice and is title/platform-specific, not a universal Ubisoft save-backup deadline. Check the current notice for the precise game, platform, affected features and dates.
The Bottom Line
Ubisoft shutdowns are title- and platform-specific, so check the current notice before assuming what changes. For an accessible Ubisoft Connect PC save, close the game and launcher, copy and verify the relevant account/game folder, and keep that copy before changing sync settings or answering a local-versus-cloud prompt. Cloud synchronization is not a separate backup, and console players need platform-specific instructions.
