First identify what is failing
There are two separate things to diagnose: the launcher and the game. If Heroic does not open, focus on its installation and launch route. If Heroic opens and shows your Amazon library but a particular game does not start, focus on that game’s compatibility settings and requirements. A working launcher does not establish that every title in its library will run.

Before changing anything, reproduce the failure once and describe exactly what happens. Does the launcher fail to open, does the library load but the game never begin, does a window appear and close, or does an online sign-in or service stop the process? “Won’t launch” can describe several different failures, and each points to a different owner of the problem.
Use the documented Heroic installation route
Install Heroic in Desktop Mode
- Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode.
- Open Discover and install Heroic Games Launcher. Heroic’s SteamOS instructions identify Discover as the installation route.
- Open Heroic and sign in or connect the Amazon account as required by the launcher. Check whether your Amazon library is visible. If the launcher itself does not open or the library is not available, the failure is occurring before the game starts; record that distinction for troubleshooting.
- If you want to launch Heroic from Game Mode, add Heroic to Steam using Heroic’s Steam Deck instructions.
- Launch Heroic from the newly added Steam entry and compare it with the same launcher opened directly in Desktop Mode. This comparison helps establish whether the problem is tied to the game or to the Steam shortcut and launch environment.
Heroic describes itself as a free, open-source launcher for Amazon Prime Games on Steam Deck. That software description does not make it a Valve or Amazon product, and it is not an endorsement by either company. It also does not certify each Amazon title or its third-party services.
Understand the two launch routes

Compare paths by asking the same questions: Is the Amazon library visible? Can the launcher install and update the title? Where are Proton or Wine versions selected? Can the launcher be added to Game Mode? Does the game require a separate launcher, DRM check, anti-cheat service, or online connection? This comparison avoids treating all “Amazon games” as one technical category.
If you already use another route, do not assume Heroic’s instructions describe its settings. First determine which launcher owns the installation and how you start the game. Installing Heroic may be a useful controlled alternative, but the documented support for Heroic does not prove that migrating a particular title will solve its compatibility problem.
Check updates and compatibility settings
Update SteamOS
Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for system updates. Install available updates using the Deck’s system update controls, then retry the launch before changing several other variables. The guidance is general; it does not identify a particular SteamOS update as a guaranteed fix for Amazon games.
Record whether the Deck was already current when the failure occurred. “Updated” is useful support information, but it is not evidence that the game itself is compatible. SteamOS updates, Proton or Wine builds, launcher behavior, and game services can change independently.

Use the compatibility controls for the route you actually use
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games. Proton makes a broad range of Windows titles possible, but it does not make every title or third-party launcher work in every configuration. A title can fail even when another Windows game runs normally on the same Deck.
For a Steam-managed app, Valve’s general guidance is to try a Proton compatibility tool from the app’s Properties > Compatibility settings. This setting may not control a game installed and managed by Heroic in the same way. For a Heroic-managed title, use Heroic’s own per-game launch and compatibility controls. Heroic provides Proton and Wine version management, but the available documentation does not identify one version that is correct for all Amazon games.
Do not confuse the compatibility tool for Heroic with the tool for the game launched by Heroic. The launcher may open while the game needs a different setting, or the game may be fine while the launcher’s own environment fails. Keep notes about which application you changed and which version was selected.
Test one relevant option at a time
- Note the compatibility tool currently selected for the game, if one is set, and note whether the launch was attempted in Desktop Mode or Game Mode.
- Change only the game’s relevant Proton or Wine selection in the launcher that manages it. Avoid changing unrelated system settings during the same test.
- Try launching the game again and note the exact result, including any error message, a sign-in screen, a brief window followed by a close, or the point where the process stops.
- If the change makes no difference or makes the result worse, restore the previous selection before testing another relevant option.
- Stop once you have a clear comparison. Repeatedly cycling through versions without recording results makes it difficult to tell whether the launcher, game, or service is responsible.
This controlled approach helps distinguish a compatibility-tool issue from a launcher or game-specific failure. No single Proton or Wine version is established as a guaranteed solution for Amazon titles, so avoid presenting a particular build as a universal fix.
Separate a Game Mode problem from a game problem
If Heroic and the game fail only when started from Game Mode, compare that behavior with launching Heroic and the game in Desktop Mode. Use the same installed title and, as far as possible, the same compatibility selection. If both routes fail at the same point, the issue is less likely to be limited to the Steam shortcut or Game Mode launch environment. If Desktop Mode works but Game Mode does not, investigate the Heroic-to-Steam shortcut and launch environment rather than repeatedly changing system-wide settings.

This comparison can also reveal a launcher-layer failure. For example, if Heroic opens in Desktop Mode but the added Steam entry does not, the game has not yet been meaningfully tested through Game Mode. Conversely, if the shortcut opens Heroic and the game fails in both modes, focus on the title’s compatibility, requirements, DRM, anti-cheat, or online service.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promised fix: the official guidance does not say that switching modes resolves every Game Mode failure. Note the result either way, since it helps describe where the failure occurs.
Check the individual game’s requirements and services
A launcher opening successfully proves only that the launcher starts. It does not prove that a particular title supports the Deck, that its hardware requirements are met, or that its DRM, anti-cheat, or online services will function through Proton. Valve notes that a game may fail to launch when the hardware is at or below its requirements; its guidance for unsupported Windows games running through Proton points users toward title-specific community discussion.
Check the requirements and current compatibility information for the exact game rather than drawing a conclusion about the entire Amazon library. Look for the title’s required operating system, graphics and memory expectations, launcher dependencies, account sign-in, DRM checks, anti-cheat, and online-service requirements. The fact that an Amazon entitlement appears in Heroic does not answer any of those questions.
Online functionality deserves separate attention. A game might start but fail when it reaches authentication, matchmaking, or another service. That is different from a launcher that never opens, and it should be reported as such. Do not label an entire Amazon catalog as compatible or incompatible based on one title.
Compatibility can vary by title and may change as launcher behavior, Proton or Wine builds, DRM, anti-cheat support, and game requirements change. The guidance does not provide a current compatibility matrix for every Amazon Prime Gaming title or establish that all Amazon games work—or fail—on Steam Deck.
Know when a launcher is part of the obstacle
A third-party launcher adds another step between selecting a game and playing it. Valve’s Steamworks compatibility guidance recommends strongly against requiring players to navigate a launcher to play a game. That is design guidance for games and their launch experience; it is not a claim that every third-party launcher fails on Steam Deck.

For troubleshooting, treat the launcher and game as separate layers: confirm whether the launcher opens, whether it can display and install the title, whether it can update the title, and whether the game itself starts. If the library is missing, investigate account or launcher access. If the library is present but installation fails, describe that as an installation or launcher issue. If installation succeeds but the executable closes, move to the game’s compatibility and requirements.
This layered approach prevents a common pitfall: changing the Deck’s system configuration when the failure is confined to one game’s launcher, DRM, or online service. It also prevents the reverse mistake of blaming Proton when the Heroic shortcut itself is not starting in Game Mode.
When not to buy hardware
No hardware purchase is established as a fix by the documented troubleshooting information. A failed launch alone does not show that the Deck needs a new drive, microSD card, battery, or repair part. First identify the launch route, update state, compatibility tool, and exact failure point.
Hardware requirements still matter for the individual game. If Valve’s requirements check indicates that the device is at or below the title’s needs, the game may not launch or may be unsupported. That is a game-specific limitation, not evidence that replacing a component will make every Amazon title work. Do not treat a software troubleshooting question as a reason to buy a product, and do not assume a storage upgrade changes DRM, anti-cheat, or Proton compatibility.

They also prevent support from suggesting the same tests repeatedly without knowing what you already tried. A failed launch by itself does not establish that the Deck needs a replacement drive, card, battery, or repair part.
