Use an in-game administrator chat command (or the equivalent RCON command) for routine moderation on a Path of Titans server. To ban a player, run /ban <Username/AGID> <duration> <banreason> <userbanreason>; to remove a ban, run /unban with the player name, IP address, or AGID. These commands update bans.txt for you. Edit bans.txt directly when you need an offline or batch change, then run /reloadbans if it must take effect immediately. The Spectator Tool also has a Ban action, but the hosting documentation says bans made there are permanent.
Every method requires the staff account to have the server’s ban permission. Check the identifier and duration before confirming: a mistaken AGID or an unintended permanent action can affect the wrong player and is harder to reverse.

What you need before banning anyone
Path of Titans server bans are administrative actions, not ordinary chat controls. Before issuing one, make sure the account you are using has the appropriate role permission, especially ban. The Path of Titans Hosting Wiki warns that these permissions should be given only to people you trust because the server owner is responsible for misuse.
Confirm the player identifier
You can target a player by Alderon Games username or by AGID. Usernames are convenient when there is only one obvious match, but AGID is safer when names are similar, recently changed, or contain unusual characters. Verify the identifier against the player currently connected before applying a permanent or long-duration action.

Decide what the player should see
The ban command accepts two reason fields. The administrator-facing reason records why staff took the action; the user-facing reason is what the banned player sees. Keep those purposes separate. A concise internal note can include the rule or evidence category, while the player-facing text should explain the outcome and duration in plain language.
Choose a duration deliberately
The documented command units are seconds (s), minutes (m), hours (h), and days (d). For example, 60s is 60 seconds, 60m is 60 minutes, 60h is 60 hours, and 60d is 60 days. Include the unit every time; a bare number does not communicate the intended period.

Ban a player with in-game chat or RCON
The hosting documentation recommends in-game chat or RCON because the command writes the ban to bans.txt automatically and has a lower chance of formatting errors than hand editing. The same command structure is used in either administration path.
Command syntax
/ban <Username/AGID> <duration> <banreason> <userbanreason>- Open the server’s in-game text chat, or connect through your authorized RCON administration interface.
- Enter
/ban, followed by the player’s Alderon Games username or AGID. - Add a duration with one of the documented units:
s,m,h, ord. - Add an administrator-facing reason and then a player-facing reason.
- Submit the command and check the server response or the player list to confirm that the intended account was affected.
Example with a temporary ban
For a 60-minute action, a command can be written as:
/ban ExamplePlayer 60m "Repeated rule violations" "You are banned for 60 minutes for repeated rule violations."The quoted strings keep each multi-word reason together. Follow the quoting style used by your hosting documentation and administration interface when a reason contains spaces. Replace the example name, duration, and wording with your server’s actual values.

Using an AGID when a name is ambiguous
If two names look alike or a username search could select the wrong person, use the player’s AGID in the first field:

An accurate identifier is more important than a fast command, particularly when the duration is measured in days.
What the two reason fields do
- Administrator reason: the staff record explaining the moderation decision.
- User reason: the message presented to the banned player.
- Duration: the period, expressed with
s,m,h, ord.
Do not swap the reason fields. If your policy requires an internal case number or evidence reference, put that information in the administrator-facing field and keep the user-facing field understandable without staff context.
Unban a player
Use the /unban command when a ban should be removed. The documentation lists three accepted forms, allowing you to identify the entry by player name, IP address, or AGID.
/unban <playername>
/unban <IPAddress>
/unban <AGID>- Open in-game administrator chat or your RCON console.
- Choose the identifier that exactly matches the ban entry you need to remove.
- Run the corresponding
/unbanform. - Verify the command result and, if necessary, have the player reconnect to confirm access has been restored.
Which identifier should you use?
Use the AGID when you want to target the account regardless of a changed display name. Use the player name when that is the only identifier you can reliably match. Use an IP address only when you have confirmed it is the address associated with the intended ban; shared networks and changing addresses can make IP-based decisions broader than expected.

If the unban appears not to work
Check that you removed the exact identifier stored in the ban list. If you changed bans.txt manually, save the file and run /reloadbans before testing again. A player may also still be connected from an earlier session, so ask them to reconnect after the server confirms the updated list.
Edit bans.txt directly
Direct file editing is useful for controlled offline changes, scripted administration, or several entries at once. The file belongs in the server’s Saved folder. Each ban occupies one line and must use this exact field order:

Temporary versus permanent entries
Use a future Unix timestamp for a temporary ban. Use 0 for a permanent ban. Because a permanent entry has no expiry timestamp, verify the AGID and both reason fields twice before saving it.
Safe editing procedure
- Stop making live moderation changes while you prepare the edit, so another administrator does not overwrite your work.
- Open
bans.txtin a plain-text editor inside the server’sSavedfolder. - Keep one complete entry per line, with fields separated by colons in the documented order.
- Check that every line begins with the intended AGID and that the timestamp is either the correct future value or
0for permanent access denial. - Save the file as plain text without changing its filename or adding formatting characters.
- Run
/reloadbansfrom authorized in-game chat or RCON if the new list must apply immediately.
Why field order matters
The server reads the colon-separated positions, not the labels you intended. Putting a user-facing explanation where the timestamp belongs can make the entry invalid or produce an unintended result. One malformed line can also complicate later troubleshooting, so check the complete line rather than only the player name.

/reloadbans tells the server to load the current contents of bans.txt immediately. Use it after adding, changing, or removing entries by hand when you cannot wait for the normal file refresh.

/reloadbansThe hosting documentation states that bans.txt otherwise hot-reloads approximately once a minute. That interval is approximate, so run the command whenever a correction must be active now—for example, after an appeal is approved or before a scheduled event begins.
When a reload is not enough
If the command succeeds but the result is unchanged, inspect the file again for the exact AGID, timestamp, colon placement, and saved location. Also confirm that you edited the active server instance rather than a backup or a different world’s Saved folder. Test with a known entry only after verifying that the intended list was loaded.

In Spectator Mode, select Ban beside the player’s name and enter an optional reason. This is convenient when you are already observing a live incident and do not want to copy an identifier into chat.
The hosting documentation explicitly states: “Bans via this method are permanent.” Treat the button as a permanent action, even if the incident would normally merit a temporary duration. Verify the player row and reason before confirming. If you need an expiry time, use the chat or RCON command instead, because the Spectator Tool method does not provide the documented temporary-duration workflow.

For ordinary moderation, the recommended path is in-game chat or RCON. Use the file method when you need controlled batch or offline work, and reserve Spectator Tool bans for cases where permanent access denial is deliberate.

Troubleshoot commands that fail or affect the wrong player
“You do not have permission” or no effect
- Confirm that the staff account has the
banpermission. - Check that the role is assigned on the server where you are issuing the command.
- Ask the server owner to grant the permission only to trusted staff; do not work around a missing role by sharing another administrator’s credentials.
The wrong player was targeted
- Stop and compare the entered username or AGID with the connected player’s identifier.
- Prefer AGID when names are duplicated, similar, or difficult to spell.
- If the action was a ban, run the appropriate
/unbanform, then verify the player can reconnect. - Review the ban list after correction so a duplicate or permanent entry is not left behind.
The reason is cut off or split
Multi-word reasons need the quoting format supported by the hosting examples. Put each complete reason in its own quoted field, and keep the administrator and user-facing fields in the documented order. If a console interprets quotation marks differently, test with a noncritical administrative note before using the command for a live ban.

The file entry does not load
- Confirm the file is named
bans.txtand is in the server’sSavedfolder. - Check that each line follows
AGID:UnixTimestamp:AdminReason:UserReason. - Ensure the timestamp is a valid future Unix value or exactly
0for a permanent ban. - Remove accidental blank formatting, extra separators, or line breaks inside an entry.
- Save the file, run
/reloadbans, and check the result again.
The ban still appears after an unban
Make sure the unban identifier matches the stored entry. If you edited the file, reload it. If the player was already connected, require a fresh connection after the updated list is active; an existing session may not reflect the change immediately.
Keep bans consistent and reversible
Use a two-person check for permanent actions
Permanent bans can be created through the Spectator Tool or by putting 0 in the timestamp field. Have a second trusted administrator confirm the player identifier, duration, and reason before applying one. This simple check addresses the highest-impact mistakes without slowing routine temporary actions.
Record enough context without exposing private data
Use the administrator reason to identify the rule or incident category and the user reason to explain the outcome. Avoid placing unrelated personal information in a player-facing message. Keep your staff records consistent so another moderator can understand why an unban or escalation is appropriate.
Separate bans from communication controls
A server ban blocks access to the server. /mute and /servermute are separate moderation commands that affect communication instead. Do not use a mute when the policy requires preventing a player from joining, and do not issue a ban when a communication-only restriction is sufficient.
Practical administration playbooks
Single temporary ban during a live session
- Confirm the player’s username or AGID and the rule involved.
- Choose the duration in seconds, minutes, hours, or days.
- Run the four-field
/bancommand in chat or RCON. - Check the result and record any internal case reference in your staff system.
Correcting an accidental ban
- Identify the exact player name, IP address, or AGID used by the ban entry.
- Run the matching
/unbancommand. - If the list was edited manually, save the correction and run
/reloadbans. - Ask the player to reconnect and confirm that access is restored.
Applying several planned bans offline
- Prepare one complete colon-separated line per player in
bans.txt. - Use a future Unix timestamp for each temporary action and
0only where permanent access denial is intended. - Review every AGID and reason with a second administrator.
- Save the file in the active server’s
Savedfolder. - Run
/reloadbanswhen the batch should become active, then verify representative entries.
Permissions and accountability
Ban commands are powerful because they change who can enter the server and can persist beyond a single session. Follow the Hosting Wiki’s warning to grant these permissions only to trusted roles or users. Define who may issue temporary bans, who may approve permanent bans, and who may process unban requests. The technical command is short; the accountability around it prevents most serious errors.
