To batch resize videos for a YouTube playlist stream, use FFmpeg for a repeatable command-line workflow or HandBrake for a graphical queue. For sources that are not 16:9, choose whether to preserve the full picture with bars or crop the edges; avoid stretching. Then check the outputs against YouTube’s recommended upload settings and inspect a sample before processing the whole collection.
First, decide what “playlist stream” means
A YouTube playlist is a collection of uploaded videos; a live stream is an encoder feed sent to YouTube. Resizing files prepares them for upload and playback in a playlist, but it does not by itself create a live stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 1080p as a valid inbound resolution for a live feed, which is a separate workflow from preparing uploaded playlist videos (YouTube Live Streaming API).
Choose how each video fits 1920×1080
1920×1080 is a 16:9 frame. If a source is also 16:9, scaling to that canvas can preserve its composition. For other aspect ratios, choose a framing treatment before batching:
- Fit with padding: preserve the entire image and fill unused space with bars. This is the safest choice when no content should be cut off.
- Fill by cropping: preserve proportions but cut off some of the picture. Check that important game HUD elements, subtitles, or action near the edges remain visible.
- Stretch: force the image into 16:9 by changing its proportions. This distorts people and objects, so it is generally not a good default.
FFmpeg documents fit-with-padding and fit-by-cropping approaches, and notes that scaling normally preserves display aspect ratio (FFmpeg scale filter documentation; FFmpeg FAQ on scaling and aspect ratio). A picture that looks stretched may also involve sample-aspect-ratio or display-aspect-ratio metadata rather than incorrectly scaled pixels, so check those properties before trying to correct it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the batch before encoding
- Keep originals separate. Create an output folder so converted files do not overwrite source videos.
- Inventory the inputs. Note each file’s orientation, frame size, frame rate, and whether it is interlaced. Pay particular attention to portrait clips, unusual aspect ratios, and any file with subtitles, HDR, or uncommon audio.
- Choose a representative sample. Encode one file with the intended settings, then inspect the whole frame and listen to the audio before applying that setup to every input.
- Plan interlaced sources. YouTube says interlaced material should be deinterlaced before upload; its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30 (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings).
Batch with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is suited to a scripted batch when you want the same explicit filter chain applied to many files. This Bash example handles common .mp4 inputs in the current directory, scales each video to fit within 1920×1080, adds black padding to make that exact canvas, and writes results to resized:
mkdir -p resized
for f in ./*.mp4; do
[ -e "$f" ] || continue
base=${f##*/}
ffmpeg -i "$f"
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart
"resized/${base%.*}_1080p.mp4"
done
The filter preserves proportions while fitting the image inside the target canvas; the pad filter fills the remaining area. FFmpeg supports filtering as part of transcoding (FFmpeg documentation; scale filter documentation). The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and fast-start MP4 layout as a practical starting point, not a universal quality or file-size optimum. It does not force a frame rate, which avoids silently replacing the source rate.

What this example does not cover
It is not a universal recipe for unusual audio layouts, subtitle streams, HDR-to-SDR conversion, variable-frame-rate edge cases, or differing source pixel aspect ratios. Check stream mapping and color handling for your actual files. If you want a cropped 16:9 image rather than bars, use a scale-to-cover and crop approach and inspect the cut edges; do not substitute a bare scale=1920:1080 command without considering the source aspect ratio.
Batch with HandBrake
For a graphical workflow, HandBrake offers Creator presets intended for videos uploaded to services such as YouTube and Vimeo, and hardware presets designed to maximize encoding speed on supported hardware (HandBrake official presets).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Open a source or source folder in HandBrake and select a suitable Creator preset.
- Set the output dimensions to 1920×1080 and review cropping behavior. Choose a fit/padding approach if the full picture must remain visible; use cropping only when the cut is acceptable.
- Add the files to the queue, checking that the intended preset and output location apply to the queued items.
- Start the queue, then inspect representative outputs for framing, playback, and audio before uploading the batch.
HandBrake’s documentation establishes the preset categories, not a guaranteed encode speed or quality for your machine and files. FFmpeg offers more direct control over an exact scripted filter chain; HandBrake gives you a visible queue and preset-based workflow. With either tool, review inputs that differ in orientation, interlacing, subtitles, color, or audio rather than assuming one setup is suitable for every file.

|---|---|
| Container | MP4 |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Scan | Progressive; deinterlace interlaced content before upload |
| Frame rate | Keep the rate at which the content was recorded |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 is the standard computer-player ratio; the player adapts to other uploaded ratios |
| SDR color | BT.709 recommended |
| 1080p SDR bitrate | 8 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps; 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps |
| 1080p HDR bitrate | 10 Mbps at 24, 25, or 30 fps; 15 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps |
The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for the stated resolution, dynamic range, and frame-rate groups—not platform minimums. Resizing also cannot add detail that was absent in a lower-resolution source. Choose dimensions to meet the intended output frame, not as a promise that upscaling will improve the image.
