To make a YouTube live stream or its archive private or unlisted, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, select Live, open the stream’s details, change Visibility, and save. Choose Private for access limited to you and people you invite; choose Unlisted when anyone with the link may watch.
Private or unlisted: which should you choose?

Use private when you need to restrict access to a named invite list. Use unlisted when sharing a link is enough; it is not access control, because recipients can pass the link on. YouTube documents these privacy behaviors in its video privacy settings and comment settings.
Change the visibility of an existing live stream or archive
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content.
- Open the Live tab to find live uploads.
- Open the relevant stream or archive’s details, or use its visibility control.
- Under Visibility, choose Private or Unlisted.
- Save the change.
YouTube documents privacy edits for live archives through the Live tab and the Content page. The exact control placement may vary as Studio’s interface changes; the setting to look for is Visibility. See YouTube’s privacy-setting instructions and live-stream archive guidance.
Set privacy when creating a stream
For a new encoder or mobile stream, choose the privacy setting in the stream’s details in Live Control Room. Webcam streams have a separate creation flow with their own privacy choice. If a stream is already live, the official instructions reviewed do not clearly establish that every stream type can be switched between private and unlisted without interrupting the broadcast. For a stream that has not started, set visibility during setup; for its archive, use the documented Content/Live-tab controls.
What privacy does—and does not—do for a 24/7 stream
Changing visibility controls who can find or watch the stream; it does not guarantee YouTube will save a complete replay. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliable source of a full YouTube archive.
