How to fight the Poltergeist
- Do not stand still. The Poltergeist throws objects with telekinetic force, so keep moving as you engage rather than trying to trade hits from one spot. Community encounter guidance recommends staying mobile.
- Close in while shooting. Pursue it at close range and keep firing when you have a clear opportunity. The community recommendation is to combine movement and close pursuit, not to wait passively for a safe, stationary shot.
- Use a high-damage weapon you can handle. Community advice names shotguns and sniper rifles as options. It does not establish which deals more damage or how many hits are needed to kill the mutant, so choose based on what you have, your ammunition, and whether you can aim comfortably while moving.
Prepare before committing
GSC Game World’s general combat guidance recommends choosing suitable ammunition and fire mode, conserving rounds with short bursts or single shots, carrying first-aid kits and bandages, and keeping weapons in good condition. These are general combat principles, not a Poltergeist-specific loadout.

Do not rely on anomaly luring as a dependable strategy. GSC’s anomaly guidance mentions claims from experienced stalkers about drawing enemies into anomalies, but presents the tactic cautiously. A separate Patch 1.2 note records a fix involving a Poltergeist activating an anomaly and taking damage; that confirms an interaction was addressed, not that luring one is a consistent way to win.

What is known about current encounter changes?
GSC announced Update 2.0 for August 20, 2026, describing it as an overhaul. The announcement does not identify a Poltergeist-specific combat change, so it does not establish that the tactics above were re-tested or altered for that update.
