Where to find Black Bear Guai
Black Bear Guai is the Chapter 1 end boss in Black Wind Cave, Bodhi Peak. The advice below follows the boss guides published by Windows Central and PowerPyx on August 20, 2024; neither establishes a definitive build or the effect of later balance changes.
Prepare for the fight
Choose whether to get the Fireproof Mantle
The mantle is optional preparation for the fiery second phase, not a prerequisite. You can attempt the fight without it by focusing on attack patterns, dodges, and short recovery-window punishments. If fire is making the encounter difficult, the secret-route detour may be worthwhile; the guides do not quantify the time saved or establish that one approach is best for every player.
To obtain it, ring all three bells in Chapter 1, defeat Elder Jinchi in the secret Ancient Guanyin Temple area, then collect the vessel from the corpse hanging by the third bell. PowerPyx recommends using the mantle for the fire phase.

Keep your offense flexible
PowerPyx recommends upgrading your staff and armor at a shrine and equipping defensive gear. Spells, a Spirit, and a transformation can also contribute damage. These are guide recommendations rather than a tested best build. In the fight itself, prioritize attacks that leave you able to dodge; long, committed heavy attacks are easier to punish while the boss is active.
First phase: dodge the full combo, then punish
Use quick attacks when Black Bear Guai is moving or attacking, and back off when he starts a string. Do not assume the first swing is the whole move: some sequences include a delayed follow-up. Windows Central describes a three-hit sequence ending in a delayed stomp and a four-hit string with a pause before its final strike. Wait out the sequence instead of dodging on autopilot.

Where the move allows it, dodge past or behind him so a follow-up may miss. There is no single dodge direction or timing that applies to every attack. Read the motion and delay of each sequence, then respond to the move in front of you.
After a combo, use the pause to land quick attacks. Windows Central notes that the boss pauses for a few seconds between combos; PowerPyx likewise recommends attacking after he finishes. If you have an opening at the end of a light-attack chain, a Focus-powered heavy can be an option, but avoid committing to a slow attack while he is still active.

Second phase: manage fire and arena hazards
At around half health, Black Bear Guai slams down, catches fire, and adds flame geysers around the arena. His attacks also carry more fire damage, making it more important to avoid complete strings rather than trade hits. If you brought the Fireproof Mantle, this is the phase in which PowerPyx recommends using it.
When he becomes a wind-like orb
If he turns into a wind-like orb and charges repeatedly, watch for the visible pulses and dodge laterally shortly after them, following the timing described by Windows Central. Do not roll too early: delayed aerial attacks can catch you during the dodge. Treat each charge as its own sequence, then attack only when the move has ended and he is recovering.

Quick decision guide
- Taking too much damage during combos: stop attacking sooner and wait for the full string, including delayed hits, to finish.
- Getting caught by slow attacks: rely on quick attacks while he is active and reserve heavier commitments for a clear opening.
- Struggling with the fire phase: consider returning for the three-bell route and Fireproof Mantle; it is optional, but intended to help with fire.
- Dodging the orb charges too early: watch for the pulse and shift laterally shortly after it rather than rolling at the first sign of the move.
