The Nintendo DS Lite first went on sale in Japan on March 2, 2006, with a suggested retail price of ¥16,800, including tax. In the United States, it launched later that year with Nintendo saying it was expected to cost as little as $129.99 at retailers. The answer depends on which market you mean.
Nintendo DS Lite launch prices by region
| Market | Launch date | Launch-price information |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | March 2, 2006 | ¥16,800 including tax; Nintendo’s manufacturer suggested retail price. Nintendo’s announcement also noted that the console came with a dedicated AC adapter. Nintendo’s January 26, 2006 announcement |
| United States | June 11, 2006 | Nintendo of America said the system was “expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States.” That was an expected low-end retail price, not a guarantee that every retailer charged exactly $129.99. Nintendo of America’s May 4, 2006 announcement, reproduced by Nintendo World Report |
| Europe | June 23, 2006 | A launch price is not established by the cited source, so the US figure should not be treated as Europe’s price. Nintendo UK’s regional launch-date history |
Why the launch price depends on the country
Japan was the DS Lite’s first market, and Nintendo gave a specific suggested retail price there. The US announcement used different wording: “expected” and “as low as” describe Nintendo’s retail expectation, not a universal fixed price. The two figures therefore represent different kinds of price statements and should not be treated as directly equivalent.
Nintendo UK’s retrospective timeline lists the Japanese, North American and European launch dates as March 2, June 11 and June 23, 2006, respectively. The release dates confirm that there was no single worldwide launch day. The timeline does not establish a European launch price.
Does that answer describe what a DS Lite costs today?
No. These are historical launch-era prices, not current resale values. Nintendo’s Japanese product page marks the DS Lite as discontinued: Nintendo DS Lite product page. A used or refurbished listing reflects the seller’s current asking price and the specific console’s condition, accessories and region—not its 2006 launch cost.
