Bring a strong Ice-type move for Cynthia’s level 62 Garchomp, and keep the Pokémon using it healthy until the end of the battle. Garchomp is Dragon/Ground, making Ice a sound offensive choice—but it carries a Sitrus Berry and can answer with Flamethrower, Earthquake, Dragon Rush, or Giga Impact, so an Ice-type Pokémon is not automatically safe.
What to expect from Cynthia’s Garchomp
In the first Champion battle, Garchomp is level 62, has the Sand Veil ability, and holds a Sitrus Berry. Its moves are Dragon Rush, Flamethrower, Giga Impact, and Earthquake. The Sitrus Berry can restore HP, so a hit that nearly finishes Garchomp may not be enough.

This is different from Cynthia’s later rematch after Stark Mountain, where her Garchomp is level 78. The level 62 matchup is the one in the initial Pokémon League Champion battle. Bulbapedia’s Cynthia’s Garchomp entry
How to prepare and handle the fight
- Choose an Ice attack. Use a Pokémon that knows a strong Ice-type move; Garchomp’s Dragon/Ground typing makes Ice a sensible offensive answer. The result depends on your Pokémon’s level, stats, and move, so this is not a guaranteed one-hit knockout.
- Keep the attacker ready. Garchomp is the last Pokémon in Cynthia’s first Champion roster. Cynthia sends out Spiritomb (level 58), Roserade (58), Togekiss (60), Lucario (60), and Milotic (58) before it. - Do not assume an Ice-type switch-in is safe. Garchomp has Flamethrower as well as Earthquake, Dragon Rush, and Giga Impact. Consider whether your chosen Pokémon can survive a hit or act before Garchomp; avoid sending in a weakened Pokémon without a reason.
- Allow for the Sitrus Berry. If Garchomp survives your attack and its Berry restores HP, be prepared to continue the fight rather than assuming the next hit will be unnecessary.
Choosing the right counter for your team
There is no single guaranteed counter established for every party. Evaluate your available Pokémon by whether they can use an Ice attack and whether they can move before or withstand Garchomp. Also consider their exposure to Earthquake and Flamethrower: a Pokémon’s Ice move makes it useful offensively, but does not by itself make it a safe switch-in.

The exact play depends on your roster, levels, stats, and moves. Without those details, a fixed move-by-move sequence or guaranteed knockout would be unreliable.
