Persian: lead with Fighting coverage
The contemporary guide recommends a strong Fighting-type for Persian, with Machamp and Lucario as examples. Choose one you have powered up and can use effectively; the source does not establish a tested best pick or a universal team ranking.

Middle slot: adjust to the Pokémon you encounter
For the pre-event lineup, the middle slot could be Honchkrow, Kangaskhan, or Kingdra. The guide recommends Fairy coverage for Honchkrow or Kingdra, while the Fighting-type used against Persian can also help against Kangaskhan. Because the middle Pokémon varies, be ready to change your plan rather than assume one fixed lineup.
Shadow Heatran: bring Water, Ground, or Fighting
For the event’s Shadow Heatran, the guide recommends Water, Ground, or Fighting types and gives Gyarados, Golurk, and Machamp as examples. Treat these as suggested options, not a tested ranking: the source reports no controlled team comparison. Choose counters you have powered up and can operate reliably.

How to find Giovanni
Giovanni requires a Super Rocket Radar, not the regular Rocket Radar used to locate Team GO Rocket Leaders. Niantic’s Help Center says the Super Rocket Radar comes from a Special Research step, which includes defeating Grunts and Leaders. The radar can be equipped or unequipped from your Bag, and it reveals possible hideouts. Some are decoy Grunts disguised as Giovanni, so check locations until you find the real one. For this event, Niantic’s announcement put it directly: “Progress through it to receive a Super Rocket Radar and chase down Giovanni!”
