Spend Beta and Burst Skills when they fit an opening or interrupt a dangerous attack—not simply because a gauge is available.
Start by reading the attack, not by committing to one defense
Bosses have different attack patterns and weaknesses, so there is no single defensive response that works for every move. Watch the wind-up and decide whether the incoming attack is blockable, better avoided with a dodge, or marked as a Fatal Attack. If you do not yet recognize the sequence, use a block to reduce the impact while you learn it.

Spacing matters too. A dodge can keep Eve safe but leave her too far away for a quick counter. A well-timed Perfect Dodge can avoid the blow while keeping her close enough to strike between enemy attacks. Use the space around the arena to manage the angle of an approach rather than backing into a corner.
Choose the defense that matches the move

The official PlayStation guide does not give numerical parry or dodge windows. Treat “just before impact” and “at the last moment” as timing cues, not fixed frame counts: learn each wind-up and adjust to the attack.

Build a punish window with blocks and dodges
Use blocks to learn a sequence
Hold L1 to reduce the damage of an incoming front-on hit. Once you recognize the wind-up, try pressing L1 just before contact to make it a Perfect Block. Successful perfect blocks can knock an enemy off balance; successive deflections can lead to a stagger. When the enemy is staggered, hold Triangle to trigger Retribution.
Time dodges late when you want to stay in range
Circle dodges Eve away from danger. Pressing it at the last moment makes a Perfect Dodge, avoiding the hit and potentially keeping her near enough to answer with an attack. Choose the direction deliberately: escaping a swing is useful, but dodging so far away that you cannot punish the recovery gives up part of the opening.
Do not try to block a Fatal Attack
Fatal Attacks are unblockable. Dodge away, or use Blink by tilting the left stick toward the enemy and pressing Circle just before the attack unleashes. Blink moves Eve behind the attacker and creates a counter opportunity.

Turn the opening into controlled damage
After a successful defense, use a concise combo or a skill that suits the opening rather than mashing attacks. Square is a light attack and Triangle is a heavy attack. The game provides eight primary combos at the outset, split between Incursion and Onslaught sets; their timing, length, movement and defensive properties differ. Practice enough to know which combination fits the recovery time you have.

Holding Triangle performs Rush, a forward dash attack with a short cooldown that can be upgraded with SP. It can help close distance, but it is not a substitute for recognizing whether the boss is still attacking.
Use Beta and Burst Skills for a purpose
Beta Skills consume limited Beta energy, and their costs and applications vary. Hold L1 plus the relevant face button to use an unlocked Beta Skill. The PlayStation guide describes options such as an unblockable thrust or a wide slash; a PlayStation combat article also recommends using a Beta Skill to interrupt a boss special attack when the situation calls for it. Check the available gauge and the skill’s fit rather than assuming one move is always best.

Burst energy is a separate resource. PlayStation’s German combat guide says a correctly timed dodge charges Burst energy, and Burst Skills become available when the gauge is full. Watch the HUD and spend that energy when a useful opening presents itself.

- Learn unlocked skills safely. Use the game’s training mode to practice combat skills without the risk of a live encounter.
- Track the boss’s pattern. Note which sequences are blockable, where a Perfect Dodge keeps Eve in range, and which attacks require a dodge or Blink.
- Adjust your approach. Experiment with combos and builds, use space to manage incoming angles, and bring consumables when they can help in the encounter.
- Use Boss Challenge when available. PlayStation’s May 23, 2024 announcement says the mode pits players against the 19 bosses from the base game. Progression requires battle data from bosses already defeated; Hard difficulty is available after seeing the ending. Players can use their own gear or presets, and the post-fight analysis reports battle time, perfect parries and dodges, and consumable use.
Boss Challenge’s listed stats can help identify what happened in a run—for example, whether you landed perfect parries or relied on consumables—but they do not provide a universal timing recipe. Adjust your response to the particular attack rather than treating a result from one boss as a rule for all of them.
Controls to keep in mind
- Square: light attack.
- Triangle: heavy attack; hold Triangle for Rush, or hold it when a staggered enemy is open to Retribution.
- L1: hold to block; press just before impact to attempt a Perfect Block. Hold L1 plus a face button to use an unlocked Beta Skill.
- Circle: dodge; a last-second input triggers Perfect Dodge. For Blink, tilt the left stick toward the enemy and press Circle just before a Fatal Attack unleashes.
