Your digital Xbox games are linked to the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed them, not to one particular console. Sign that account into a new Xbox and you can access and install eligible games there; whether a title works depends on the destination console and the game’s compatibility. Home Xbox settings affect sharing and offline licensing, not ownership.
Do you have to buy your digital Xbox games again?
Generally, no. Microsoft’s Usage Rules for Digital Goods say users may access or install Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games on a reasonable number of Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles, including a Home console or roaming consoles where the user is signed in. That covers access across those console families, but it does not mean every game runs on every generation.
For a new Xbox, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, then find and install titles compatible with that console. If a game was included with a console through Xbox Digital Direct, its content is redeemed to an account; Digital Direct does not move ownership of earlier purchases to a different account. See Xbox Digital Direct.
What to do on your new Xbox
- Identify the owning account. Use the Microsoft account that purchased the game or redeemed its code or included content.
- Sign in on the new console. Use that account to access its digital library.
- Find and install compatible games. A game’s availability and supported features depend on the title and the console generation; do not assume every Xbox One game works on every Xbox Series console, or vice versa.
- Set up sharing if needed. If other people use the console, decide whether it should be your Home Xbox. This setting affects shared access and offline licensing, rather than changing who owns the games.
Home Xbox, another console, and offline play
Home Xbox is primarily a sharing and licensing setting. Microsoft’s game product-sharing documentation describes a designated Home console as sharing the purchaser’s offline licenses. Other users signed in on that console can access the purchaser’s digital games and durable content.

A different, roaming console works on a different basis: the purchasing account signs in to Xbox services to access its games. Microsoft’s licensing guide describes offline play on the Home console and play on another console after sign-in. Exact consumer-facing exceptions and current setup details are not established here, so check Xbox Support for the current rules before relying on offline access while traveling.
What changes for discs, subscriptions, and saves?
Physical discs
A disc is not the same as a digital purchase: access can depend on having the disc and a console that supports it. Xbox Wire announced a disc-to-digital feature on August 26, 2026, stating, “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That statement applies to the announced feature, not every disc game. Check the current rollout and supported-title information in Xbox Wire’s announcement before assuming a particular disc qualifies.

Subscription games
Access to a game through a subscription catalog is not the same as owning it permanently. Check that your subscription remains active and that the title is still available in the catalog; do not treat a subscription game as a purchased entitlement.
Save files
A game license and a saved game are separate things. The available official migration guidance does not establish a universal guarantee that saves move automatically, so check the support guidance for your console and game rather than assuming the game’s entitlement proves its save is present.
