There is no single route that guarantees success on the Dusty Path. Treat each trip as an expedition: unlock the path with the Compass, bring cured meat and water, travel toward useful landmarks, and return to the village while you can still get back safely. Bank what you find, improve your supplies and equipment, then push farther on the next trip.
Before you leave the village
Unlock the path and meet its entry requirement
In the browser version, buying the Compass opens the Dusty Path. You also need cured meat to embark; the current browser code checks that it is in your carried outfit. The official browser source code confirms the embark check and the food-and-water mechanics. The community wiki’s browser-path page also describes the Compass and cured-meat requirement. Exact controls and requirements can vary by edition.
Pack for the trip you can actually make
Carry cured meat and water, and equip the best suitable weapon and protective gear you have. Your expedition depends on what you bring with you; village stockpiles do not help while you are away. Carrying capacity also limits how much you can bring back, so avoid filling your load with supplies you are unlikely to need. Keep cured meat available for village roles such as miners as well as for travel.
For an early outing, aim for a nearby point of interest rather than trying to cross the map. A short trip lets you learn the route and return with resources without relying on strong equipment or a large supply reserve.

Manage food, water, and combat as you explore
Watch both supply clocks
Movement consumes food and water over time, so check both reserves as you travel. In the browser game, the Slow Metabolism perk doubles the number of moves before food is consumed, while Desert Rat does the same for water. These perks extend your range; they do not make supplies unlimited.
Make landmarks your goals
Move toward visible or newly revealed points of interest, but let your supplies—not curiosity—set the limit on how far you continue. The older Jay is Games walkthrough describes different sites and their uses: caves can provide food and water, cleared caves and settlements can serve as safe places to replenish water, and mines provide resources for equipment and village production. Treat its route and encounter details as guidance rather than a guarantee for every version.

Prepare for fights and retreat before you are stranded
Encounters away from roads or safe locations can be dangerous, and enemies vary in strength. Use a weapon suited to your progress; food and medicine can help during fights when available. If your supplies are falling and the return journey is still manageable, head back instead of gambling on one more landmark. A safe return lets you bank loot and retain explored map progress, making several shorter expeditions a practical strategy.
Choose between short trips and longer expeditions

Decide based on how much food and water you can carry, whether you can handle likely fights, whether a safe resupply point is reachable, and how much additional loot is worth the added risk. The longer-trip approach becomes more viable as you improve equipment and establish safe places along the route.

Use each return to prepare for the next push
Back in the village, put recovered resources toward better equipment and production. Mine resources can support stronger armor and weapons: the older walkthrough discusses iron for improved gear and steel for stronger items. Clearing mines can also let workers produce resources such as iron, coal, or sulfur. The exact order depends on what you have already unlocked; no one upgrade sequence is required.
Repeat the cycle: prepare, travel to a worthwhile landmark, resupply or retreat, and invest what you brought home. As your gear, production, and travel perks improve, you can safely attempt more distant sites.
