For a dependable Fire Giant win, close the distance while dodging his opening shield attacks, then target his wounded left ankle during phase one. In phase two, change your approach: the boss gains different attacks, including area attacks, so keep moving and leave room to evade. The old trick of making him fall from the arena is reported to be blocked; a different cliff-shooting route has been described but was not confirmed to work.
How to beat the Fire Giant in a standard fight
The encounter has two phases, and the first phase’s ankle-focused strategy does not cover the second. The following approach reflects guide recommendations, not guaranteed requirements.
Phase one: approach and attack the wounded ankle
- Cross the opening distance carefully. Torrent can help you reach the boss, but watch for his opening shield attacks. Evade the wave or sweep rather than trying to run straight through it.
- Stay close once you reach him. A GamesRadar guide recommends attacking the wounded left ankle. Slashing damage is its suggested damage type; this is advice, not a universal guarantee.
- Use openings, then reposition. Evade incoming attacks and return to the ankle when it is safe to do so. Fire protection and a high-health Spirit Ash are also guide recommendations, not prerequisites.
Phase two: adapt to the changed moveset
In phase two, the Fire Giant changes his behavior and adds area attacks. Do not rely on the phase-one pattern or stay committed to a single attack position. Keep enough space to recognize and evade his attacks, then move in when there is a safe opening.
Torrent is useful for traversal, but the GamesRadar guide notes that summoning another player disables Torrent. Treat player summons, Spirit Ashes, and equipment choices as options; decide whether their benefits fit your approach.

Does the Fire Giant cheese still work after the patch?
The classic cheese—luring the boss toward terrain so he falls out of the arena—is described in older coverage as a historical method. GamesRadar later reported that invisible barriers appeared to stop the Fire Giant from falling out. That makes the old fall tactic an unreliable choice, rather than a dependable current strategy.
GamesRadar also described an alternative involving Torrent’s double-jump, luring the boss toward the northeast, and shooting at him from raised cliffs. The outlet explicitly said it had not tested or confirmed that route. It should be treated as an unverified report, not as a working replacement or a method known to beat the current version.

What patches 1.17 and 1.17.1 establish
Bandai Namco’s patch 1.17 notes, published August 27, 2026, show App Ver. 1.17 / Regulation Ver. 1.17 after the update and list supported PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Steam platforms. The notes cover gameplay balance adjustments and other changes, but do not mention the Fire Giant or a change to either cheese route. That absence does not verify that an exploit works; it only means these notes do not document a Fire Giant change.
GamesRadar’s coverage of patch 1.17.1 describes a fix for a multiplayer issue involving DLC-specific items obtained by players who were not eligible to have them. It does not report a Fire Giant change. Neither patch source confirms that the alleged cliff route works.

Rewards for defeating the Fire Giant
GamesRadar’s guide reports a reward of 180,000 Runes and a Remembrance. A historical GameSpot guide mirrored on the 343 Industries Community Forum also lists 180,000 Runes and says the Remembrance can be sold for 30,000 Runes or exchanged for rewards. The older mirror is useful for historical reward details, not evidence of current exploit behavior: GameSpot’s Fire Giant guide, mirrored by the 343 Industries Community Forum.
