How to Beat The Plant Boss Blind in Balatro

The Plant disables face-card scoring in Balatro. Choose a non-face-card scoring route, or use a reroll or effect-disabling Joker if your run provides one.

The Plant debuffs every face card, so a run built around Kings, Queens, Jacks, or other face-card scoring can lose its main engine when this Boss Blind appears. The most reliable approach is to enter with a scoring route that does not depend on face cards—or use a reroll or Boss Blind effect-disabling Joker if your run has one. There is no single winning hand that works for every build.

What The Plant does

The Plant’s rule is “All face cards are debuffed.” The cited game-data reference lists this effect for Balatro version 1.0.1o-FULL, along with an appearance eligibility of Ante 4 onward, a target of ×2 the Ante base, and a $5 reward. These values can change with game updates; check the installed game if you are playing a later version. Game Design Lab’s Plant reference

Debuffed cards should not be counted on to score normally. The Plant is therefore especially dangerous when face cards supply the run’s main scoring, but it is less disruptive to a build whose scoring comes from other cards or effects.

Choose a counter that fits your run

Before committing to a route, ask whether your current scoring engine can reach the Boss Blind target without face cards, and what you would give up to change course. The options below are conditional: none guarantees a win, and the available sources provide no measured success rates.

Route When it fits Trade-off
Keep using your existing non-face-card engine Your hands and Jokers already score without relying on face cards. Its contribution still has to be enough to meet this run’s target; the sources do not establish a universal winning hand.
Build a backup scoring route Your primary plan depends on face cards and you have time or resources to adapt before the blind. Changing hands, enhancements, or Jokers may cost resources or weaken another part of the build. Insider Gaming discusses these as possible adaptations, not guaranteed solutions. Insider Gaming’s guide
Reroll the Boss Blind You have Director’s Cut or Retcon available and prefer to spend that resource rather than face The Plant. Availability depends on the run, and rerolling uses a resource. The community Blinds and Antes reference lists these as Boss Blind reroll options.
Disable the Boss Blind effect You have Chicot or Luchador available. These Jokers are not guaranteed shop finds. The community Blinds and Antes reference identifies them as ways to disable Boss Blind effects.

Prepare if your build relies on face cards

Find an independent scoring source

Look for a way to score that does not require face cards to behave normally. A backup hand, non-face-card scoring cards, or Jokers that support another route may help, depending on what your run offers. Insider Gaming also discusses Planet Cards and enhanced cards as possible parts of adapting; treat them as tools to evaluate in context, not as guaranteed counters.

Assess the target against your actual build

The Plant’s cited target is ×2 the Ante base in version 1.0.1o-FULL. Compare that requirement with the scoring your non-face-card route can actually produce. The target is a game value, not a promise that a particular hand or Joker combination will clear it.

Check for Pareidolia before entering

Pareidolia changes the scope of The Plant’s effect: according to the Plant reference, every card counts as a face card while Pareidolia is active. That means every card is debuffed, not only the cards that are normally face cards. If you have Pareidolia, account for this interaction before entering the blind and do not assume ordinary non-face cards remain a fallback.

When there is no reliable counter in the run

If your scoring depends on face cards and you have no independent route, reroll, or effect-disabling Joker, the available sources do not establish a guaranteed way through. Judge the blind against the tools you actually have rather than relying on a universal hand recommendation. Balatro’s official FAQ describes the scoring loop and the traditional run’s Ante 8 endpoint, but does not provide a Plant-specific strategy. Official Balatro FAQ
