Reach it through the route’s backstage minigame sequence, then dodge the attack patterns and steer HERO_SWORD into openings to hit the holder. Defeating it awards the Shadow Mantle.
How to reach the Shadow Mantle fight
The encounter is reached through the Sword Route’s backstage minigames. A route guide describes unlocking the S-rank room by meeting the board-rank condition, then completing the minigames in sequence. Its route summary calls out an Ice Key in Round 1 and using it during Round 2 to obtain the Shelter Key; revisit backstage after the relevant rounds and follow the in-game prompts.

How to fight the holder
Dodge, then guide HERO_SWORD into openings
This is an action-sword encounter. Evade the holder’s patterns and move HERO_SWORD into openings to land attacks. Use the quieter transitions between phases to reset your position before the next pattern begins.

Do not rely on a fixed script
The encounter has multiple phases and movement patterns, but the available reference does not establish a guaranteed sequence or frame-perfect solution. Watch each pattern and adjust your movement rather than assuming every attempt will follow an identical script. A video guide can help you see the fight’s motion.
Do equipment and consumables matter?
The Deltarune Wiki lists the holder at 30 HP and says damage depends on how many times it was hit during the previous attack. According to that reference, prior gear and consumables do not determine this damage mechanic, so grinding equipment or stocking items specifically for the fight is not necessary.

Defeating the optional holder awards the Shadow Mantle. It can help in the separate Roaring Knight encounter later in Chapter 3. If you are facing the Knight, you are in a different fight; defeating the holder is how you obtain the armor.
