Use bones on wild wolves. Each bone has a one-in-three chance to tame a wild wolf, so keep trying on the same wolf until it is tamed, then repeat with other wild wolves until you have five.
How to tame five wolves
- Find a wild wolf. Use a bone on a wolf that is not hostile.
- Keep using bones until it is tamed. A bone is a chance, not a guarantee; if one attempt fails, try again.
- Repeat with other wild wolves until you have tamed five. You can gather them across multiple encounters rather than finding all five in one pack.
How many bones do you need?
There is no guaranteed total. Minecraft’s official bone guide gives each bone a one-in-three chance to tame a wild wolf, so the number needed depends on how many attempts succeed. The guide gives hostile wolves a zero-in-three chance of being tamed with a bone, so choose a wild wolf instead.
Do five wolves need to be in one pack?
No. Pack size can vary by biome and game version. For example, Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes describe packs of two to four for black, chestnut, and rusty wolves; four to eight for spotted and striped wolves; and a lone snowy wolf. These are Java 1.20.5 spawn details, not a guarantee that every platform or later version has the same pack sizes. If one encounter does not provide enough wolves, look for more across other encounters.
