When he plants his sword and begins charging an arena-wide beam, move behind the sword for cover; attack again after the beam ends. Defeating him in the Titan Grotto during Act 2 awards the Flame Ruby for A Crown of Stone.
Prepare for physical and fire damage
Zalmarath is an Act 2 boss in the Titan Grotto, encountered during A Crown of Stone. Guides identify both physical and fire damage in the fight, so prioritize life, physical defense such as armor, and fire resistance. These are practical preparation tips, not tested minimum requirements or guarantees for a particular build.
Movement speed can help you reach cover when the beam attack begins. If you need to choose between standing still to deal damage and repositioning out of danger, prioritize survival: Zalmarath’s attacks cover broad areas, and the arena itself becomes less safe as the fight progresses. The encounter’s location, quest connection, damage profile, and mechanics are described by Exile2 Guides and the POE Vault Act 2 boss guide.
How to respond to Zalmarath’s attacks
Arm sweep
Move out of the sweep’s arc when Zalmarath draws back or swings an arm across the platform. Do not stay beside him just to maintain damage; the attack threatens a large section of the arena.

Sword stabs, slices, and rakes
Track the weapon’s direction and dodge away from the lane or area where the sword is driven or dragged. Some attacks have follow-ups, so avoid returning immediately to the same spot after the first dodge. Reposition before resuming attacks.
Falling debris and ground hazards
Keep scanning the arena as well as the boss. A beam aimed at the ceiling can bring rocks down, and other attacks threaten the floor. Move away from hazardous ground rather than focusing only on Zalmarath’s animation.

Projectiles and repositioning
Move through gaps in projectile spreads, and do not chase Zalmarath blindly when he shifts position. Check your route and the arena edges before closing in.
Arena-wide beam
When Zalmarath plants his sword and winds up the beam, move behind the planted sword. The sword provides cover from this attack. Stay there until the beam ends, then leave cover and re-engage.

Stay on the safe part of the platform
The platform can break at its edges as the fight progresses. Favor the inner section and check your footing before dodging or pursuing the boss; a roll that escapes an attack can still send you off the platform if you have no room. Later adds can also obstruct your movement or block the route to the sword. Clear them when they prevent you from reaching safe ground or cover.
What happens after the fight
Defeating Zalmarath awards the Flame Ruby, the quest item that advances A Crown of Stone.

Version and hit-feedback note
An unofficial guide updated 2026-08-03 identifies its coverage as Path of Exile 2 Early Access 0.5.4; that does not establish which version is live at publication. The Path of Exile 2 Wiki search result records historical changes in version 0.1.1 to attack damage areas and arm targeting, but those notes do not establish the boss’s current behavior. Zalmarath’s size can also make hit feedback look unusual. Available guide material does not establish a reproducible current hitbox bug or confirm that all such issues have been fixed.
