To become an administrator on a Project Zomboid dedicated server, join once with the player account you want to promote, then run setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin in the live server console. Do not put a slash in front of the command in a dedicated-server or hosting-panel console. If you enter it through in-game chat, use /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin instead.
The account must already exist on the server, and the role name must match your Project Zomboid build. Build 42 and Build 41 do not document exactly the same access-level names, so checking help setaccesslevel before changing a role prevents many failed promotions.

What you need before running the command
Have these items ready before changing permissions:

- A running Project Zomboid server, either self-hosted or managed through a hosting panel.
- The player account’s exact in-game username. This is the account name used to join the server, not necessarily the Steam display name.
- Access to the dedicated-server console, hosting-panel web console, or an account that already has permission to issue administrator commands.
- The server build number, especially if the server is running Build 42 rather than Build 41.
- The administrator account password created when a fresh dedicated server was first launched, if you are using the built-in admin account.

Promote your player account from the server console
1. Join the server once
Launch Project Zomboid and connect with the account that should receive administrator rights. Stay connected long enough for the server to register the account, then leave or remain online while you perform the promotion. If you skip this step, the server may report that the player cannot be found even when the spelling looks correct.
2. Open the live console
Open the dedicated-server console on the machine running the server, or open the live console supplied by your hosting panel. The server must be running when you issue the command. A text box intended for server commands is different from a general panel setting for the server name, password, or configuration file; enter the command in the live console that accepts runtime commands.
3. Check the accepted role names
At the console prompt, run:
help setaccesslevel
This asks the running server to display the syntax and access levels accepted by that build. It is particularly useful after an update, because a role documented for Build 41 may not be accepted by a Build 42 server.

4. Grant administrator access
Enter the following command, replacing the value in quotes with the account username:
setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin
Do not add a leading slash in the dedicated-server or panel console. Keep the quotation marks when the username contains spaces; quoting an ordinary username is also a safe way to preserve the exact account string.

5. Reconnect and open the admin interface
Disconnect and reconnect the promoted account, or close and reopen the admin interface if it was already open. Some clients do not redraw newly granted controls until the next connection. If the command is accepted but the controls are still missing, use the troubleshooting checks below rather than repeatedly issuing the grant.

Project Zomboid also accepts administrative commands through in-game chat when the account sending the command already has sufficient privileges. In chat, the slash is required:
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin
The slash tells the chat parser that the message is a command instead of ordinary text. The same text entered into a dedicated-server console with the slash will generally fail or be treated as invalid input. Conversely, removing the slash from chat sends a normal chat message rather than an administrative command.
PZwiki’s Dedicated server documentation states that administrator commands are available from either the server console or in-game chat when the user has administrator status, and that /help lists commands available in chat. In the console, use help or the command-specific help form supported by the server.

Use the built-in administrator account on a fresh server
A new dedicated server prompts for an administrator-account password during its first launch. That account is separate from the ordinary player account you use for day-to-day play. Sign in with the built-in administrator account, connect to the server, and then promote your normal player account with the setaccesslevel command.

The first-launch password is the password associated with that administrator account. Editing a later panel field does not necessarily rewrite the existing account credential. If the password is rejected, use the server’s password command or the hosting panel’s documented password-change procedure to change the account, rather than assuming that a configuration-field edit changed an already-created administrator account.

Build 41 and Build 42 access levels
Access-level names are version-sensitive. PineRiver’s current guidance covers both branches, while RespawnHost’s Build 42 command reference was updated July 20, 2026. The documented names are:

The list above reflects the names documented by PineRiver and the Build 42 reference from RespawnHost. It is not a substitute for checking the server itself. Run help setaccesslevel while the server is running and copy a role exactly as displayed there. A role can be rejected because of the build, spelling, or an access-level list that differs from the documentation.

What administrator access allows
The administrator role is intended for server management rather than ordinary gameplay. The cited command references describe administrator tools for tasks such as:
- Moderating players and handling disruptive behavior.
- Spawning items for testing, recovery, or controlled events.
- Teleporting players or managing their positions.
- Changing weather or other world conditions.
- Running additional server-management commands exposed by the current build.
Because these commands can change other players’ experience and the persistent world, grant the narrowest role that covers the job. Keep the full admin level for trusted operators; use a less powerful level when moderation or observation is all that is required. The exact command set can change with the game build, so rely on the running server’s help output for the authoritative list.
Troubleshoot a failed promotion
“Player not found” or no account is listed
- Have the target player join the server once using the account that should be promoted.
- Copy the username used by that account, including capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and any other characters.
- Do not substitute a Steam display name unless it is identical to the account username.
- Run the command again in the live console:
setaccesslevel "ExactUsername" admin.

Nothing happens in a hosting-panel console
Confirm that the server is running and that you opened the panel’s live command console rather than a configuration editor. Remove the leading slash. A panel console uses the same no-slash form as the dedicated-server console:

If the panel reports an error, run help setaccesslevel first. That response can reveal whether the console is receiving commands and which role names the current server recognizes.

The access level is rejected
Check the server branch and the exact spelling shown by help setaccesslevel. Build 41 documentation includes overseer, while Build 42 documentation lists priority and does not present the same role list. Copying a role name from an older guide into a newer server is a common cause of rejection. The Build 42 command list from RespawnHost is at Project Zomboid Admin Commands (Build 42).
The password for the admin account is rejected
Use the password created when the dedicated server first prompted for an administrator account. If that credential no longer works, follow the server’s password command or your panel’s account-management procedure to change it. A later edit to a panel field may not alter the already-created account, so test the actual administrator login after changing the password.
The command succeeds but controls are missing
Reconnect the player, then reopen the admin interface. A client that was connected before the promotion may not refresh its available controls immediately. If a fresh connection still lacks access, verify the username and role in the server console, and check that the command was sent through the correct input method: no slash in console, slash in chat.
You cannot connect to your own dedicated server
PZwiki lists UDP ports 16261 and 16262 as the default ports used for dedicated-server connectivity. Check that the server’s configured ports are forwarded through the router and allowed by the host firewall, and that the client is connecting to the same address and port configured by the server. If you changed the defaults, use the configured values rather than assuming the defaults still apply. See PZwiki’s Dedicated server documentation for the default-port reference.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for admin work
The command itself is the same, but the operational experience differs depending on where the server runs. When choosing a route, compare the following capabilities instead of assuming that every panel exposes the same controls:

Hosting documentation from Host Havoc, PineRiver, and RespawnHost demonstrates the kinds of console and build instructions a managed service may publish, but those documents do not establish universal pricing, uptime, performance, or geographic coverage. Verify those details directly for the service and plan you are considering.

Operational safeguards after granting admin rights
- Give
adminonly to people who need unrestricted server controls. - Use a narrower role for a moderator, game master, observer, or queue-management task when the build supports one.
- Keep the administrator-account password private and avoid sharing the same credential among operators.
- Record who received elevated access and remove it when that person no longer needs it.
- Back up the server before using commands that alter the world, spawn large quantities of items, or affect multiple players.
- Test a command on a non-production server when you are unsure how the current build interprets it.
- After updates, rerun
help setaccessleveland review the accepted roles before promoting additional accounts.
