Start by confirming Minecraft 1.18.2, 64-bit Java 17, about 8 GB of allocated memory and roughly 3 GB of free disk space. Then identify the exact stage of failure, preserve the logs, and change only the setting or files associated with that stage.
Check the supported baseline before changing anything
Vault Hunters 3rd Edition SkyVault servers are built around the following baseline in the Vault Hunters Official Wiki installation guidance (accessed 2026):

Use the Java executable selected by the server startup script, not merely the Java version installed somewhere on the computer. Run java -version from the same account and environment that launches the server. Confirm that the output identifies Java 17 and that the process is 64-bit; operating-system package names can be misleading when multiple runtimes are installed.
Memory is an allocation, not a cure-all. If the log reports an out-of-memory condition, stop other heavy applications, ensure the operating system has enough free memory, and raise the server allocation to the recommended level. More RAM will not repair a missing dependency, a wrong Forge build or an invalid world-generation setting.

Classify the error by when it occurs
The timing of the failure narrows the search much faster than the final line of a crash screen. Use this triage table before reinstalling anything.

Do not delete worlds or replace every mod after a symptom-only diagnosis. A broad reinstall destroys useful evidence and can make a recoverable save harder to restore.
Collect a useful evidence bundle first
Save the complete latest.log, any crash-report file, and the server-console output from the launch that failed. Keep the files from the same incident together. A screenshot of the last line is rarely enough because the cause is often several lines earlier.

- Record the Vault Hunters/SkyVault release, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version and whether Java is 64-bit.
- Record the memory allocation and the amount of free disk space at the time of failure.
- For a join or disconnect problem, save the affected player’s client log as well as the server log.
- Note whether the same action works in a newly generated test world. Do not overwrite the original save while testing.
Sky Vaults Support asks issue reporters for the triggering events, mod version and console or in-game error. Supplying those items in the first report makes it possible to distinguish a configuration problem from a reproducible defect.

Fix crashes during startup
Select Java 17 and verify the architecture
Point the startup script or hosting panel directly at a Java 17 executable. If the machine has several Java installations, an unqualified java command may select the wrong one. Re-run java -version from the launch environment and restart the server after changing it. A Java error that disappears after selecting 17 confirms a runtime mismatch; it does not prove that every later world-generation error is solved.
Correct memory and disk conditions
Allocate about 8 GB as recommended by the official installation guide, while leaving sufficient memory for the operating system and any graphical client running on the same machine. If the operating system begins swapping or terminates the process, close competing applications before increasing the allocation further. Check that at least approximately 3 GB of disk space remains and that the server account can write to its installation, libraries, logs and world directories.
Rebuild incomplete or corrupted server files
Use the server files for the exact Vault Hunters release rather than assembling a server from a client installation. If a download was interrupted or files were manually removed, stop the server, move the suspect installation aside, obtain a fresh copy of the release’s official server files, and apply only documented configuration changes. Do not copy an unrelated client mods folder over the server directory; client-only additions and different versions can create missing-dependency or registry errors.

Compare the server’s mod filenames and versions with the release manifest and with the clients. A missing library, duplicate jar or mod built for another Minecraft/Forge version should be corrected before changing world settings. The first dependency-related error in the log is more useful than a later cascade of “failed to load” messages.

Configure SkyVault world generation correctly
The Sky Vaults Support procedure for Vault Hunters S3 requires three coordinated changes. Changing only one of them can leave a server with ordinary terrain, a generation crash or a world that continues using its old settings.
Back up and stop the server
- Stop the server cleanly and wait until the process exits.
- Copy the entire existing world directory and, if practical, the complete server directory to a separate location. Label the backup with the date and the old configuration.
- Do not test a destructive regeneration on the only copy of a valued save.
Apply the S3 SkyVault changes
- Remove the Terralith mod from the server installation as directed by Sky Vaults Support for this procedure.
- Install the Sky Vault support mod that corresponds to the installed Vault Hunters S3 release. Do not substitute a similarly named file from another Minecraft version.
- Open
server.propertiesand changelevel-type=defaulttolevel-type=the_vault:sky_vaults. - Save the file, checking that the property was not duplicated later in the file and that the text uses the exact lower-case identifier.
Regenerate a world created with the wrong setting
World-generation settings are used when terrain is created; changing level-type does not convert terrain that already exists. After making the backup, remove or rename the existing world instance so the next launch creates a new one. The precise directory name is the value of level-name in server.properties. Renaming it is safer than immediately deleting it because it leaves a rollback path.
Start the server and watch the console through initial generation. Confirm that the new save is actually the SkyVault world before allowing players to build in it. If generation fails again, stop, preserve the new logs and compare the support-mod and Forge versions rather than repeatedly deleting worlds.

A known-issues compilation documents a server-side SkyVault behavior in which overworld terrain can generate outside the initial island area. Its published workaround is to pre-generate a large region before inviting players. The example command is:

The documented example targets a 100-by-100-chunk area around the origin, approximately 1,600 by 1,600 blocks. Treat that command as version-sensitive: validate the syntax and argument order against the exact installed pack before running it. A generation job of that size can consume substantial CPU, memory and disk I/O, so run it while no one is playing, monitor the console, and keep a verified backup.
Pre-generation reduces the chance that a player triggers the spillover while exploring, but it does not correct an incorrectly configured world. If the world was created with level-type=default or with incompatible terrain mods, follow the backup-and-regenerate procedure instead.
Fix disconnects and failed friend connections
When a player is kicked after joining
Compare the client’s Vault Hunters release, Minecraft version, Forge version and mod files with the server. “The same pack” means the same release build, not merely a similar profile name. Remove locally added or outdated jars and install the release’s client files again if necessary. Read the client and server logs at the join timestamp; a registry mismatch is usually visible on both sides, while a damaged player or world state may appear only on the server.
Test with one account in a fresh, backed-up test world. If the test works but one existing player always disconnects at a particular location, preserve the original save and identify the player’s last location and action before attempting any administrative repair.

When friends cannot reach the server at all
- Confirm that the server has completed startup and is listening before a friend tries to connect.
- Give remote players the correct external address and configured port, not a local-only address such as
localhost. - Check the host firewall and router forwarding for the port used by the server. A connection that never appears in the server console is usually being blocked or sent to the wrong address.
- Have a friend retry while you watch the console. A visible connection followed by a disconnect points toward pack synchronization or a server-side error; no visible attempt points toward addressing, forwarding or firewall configuration.
- Do not change world-generation files to solve a connection that never reaches the server process.
Deal with crashes caused by gameplay state
Completion-type bounty crashes
The known-issues compilation records an occasional crash associated with completion-type bounties. Until the installed release has a confirmed fix, avoid interacting with the triggering bounty, record its exact type and reproduce the issue only in a backup or test environment. Report a repeatable case with the complete logs instead of repeatedly claiming the same bounty on the live save.
Repair-state administration
The official admin reference lists /the_vault gear_debug repairs fix for decreasing used repair slots. This command addresses a repair-state issue; it is not a remedy for Java, startup, networking or SkyVault terrain generation. Use administrative commands only with the required permissions and after backing up the save.
Choose the least destructive fix path

A managed host can reduce local Java-process, backup and networking work, but compatibility with the exact Vault Hunters/SkyVault release, region, pricing, uptime and backup policy must be verified before moving a save. Hosting does not remove the need for correct mod files or a valid level-type. Report an unresolved defect with the right details
The official Vault Hunters play page says: “You can report bugs in the Official Vault Hunters discord server by typing ‘/bug-report’ in any channel!” Use that route after applying the non-destructive checks above.
Include:
- Vault Hunters/SkyVault release, Minecraft 1.18.2 confirmation and Forge version.
- Java 17 version and 64-bit status.
- Allocated RAM and available disk space.
- The complete
latest.log, crash report and relevant client log, with personal paths or addresses removed if necessary. - The exact command, action, world name and player involved.
- Whether Terralith was removed, which SkyVault support mod was installed, and the current
level-type. - Whether the issue reproduces in a newly generated, backed-up test world.
That evidence lets support separate an environment problem from a pack defect and avoids destructive trial-and-error on the main save.
