The game does not document a Steam ID administrator whitelist for The Forest, and you cannot add administrator access after you have connected.

What actually grants admin access
The Forest uses a password-based administrator check. The server owner sets an administration password, and a player supplies that password while joining. If the password is accepted, that connection receives the server’s administrator privileges.

- Authentication point: the join dialog, before the connection is established.
- Command entry: open chat with Enter and prefix an administrator command with
/.
Being the dedicated-server owner, hosting the machine, or knowing the server’s normal player password does not by itself make a connected player an administrator. The administrator password is a separate setting.
Set the administrator password
Choose the setup that matches the way your server is launched. A self-hosted installation normally uses Server.cfg or a launch option. A rented or managed server commonly exposes an Admin Password field in its control panel.

Method 1: edit Server.cfg
- Stop the dedicated server. Changing a file while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down or restarts.
- Open the server’s configuration directory. A commonly documented Windows location is
C:Users<WindowsUser>AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerds. Replace<WindowsUser>with the Windows account that runs the server. - If the directory is missing, launch the dedicated server once. Community documentation reports that the first run creates the configuration files; errors during that initial run have also been reported as normal. Treat this as a practical setup observation rather than a guarantee for every build.
- Open
Server.cfgin a plain-text editor. - Find the
serverPasswordAdminentry. Set it to a strong password, for exampleserverPasswordAdmin=Use-a-unique-long-password. Keep the exact key name and do not add quotation marks unless the file already uses them for values. - Save the file, then start the server and wait until it is ready to accept connections.
The official wiki describes a blank serverPasswordAdmin value as meaning that there is no password. Leaving it blank therefore does not create a usable administrator login.
Method 2: pass the password at launch
You can provide the same setting on the server’s launch command line:

Command-line values override matching entries in the configuration file, so a launch option can explain why changing Server.cfg appears to have no effect. Check the shortcut, batch file, service definition, or startup arguments used to launch the server and remove or update an old -serverpassword_admin value if necessary.
Do not confuse the launch option’s spelling with the configuration key: the file uses serverPasswordAdmin, while the launch argument is -serverpassword_admin.

Method 3: use a hosting control panel
Managed game-server hosts often provide an Admin Password field in the startup or configuration page. Enter the password there, save or submit the setting, and restart the server if the panel requests it.
On these services, the panel may inject the value into the launch command every time the server starts. In that situation, editing a copy of Server.cfg over file access may have no effect because the launch-line value takes precedence. Use the panel’s field as the authoritative setting unless the host explicitly documents another method.
Join with administrator privileges
- Start or restart the server after setting the password.
- Open The Forest‘s multiplayer browser and select the target dedicated server.
- Open the server’s join dialog rather than joining through a path that skips the dialog.
- Enter the configured value in the dialog’s Admin Password field. Entering only the ordinary server password is not sufficient.
- Submit the join request and wait for the connection to complete.
- After spawning, press Enter to open chat and run an administrator command with a leading slash, such as
/help.
Administrator authentication happens during the join process. If you connected without the admin password, entering it in chat later does not elevate that existing connection. Leave the server, reconnect, and supply the password in the join dialog.

The most direct documented check is the help command:

/helpEnter it in chat exactly as shown. The command list displayed by the server is the practical indication that command entry is available to your connection. If the message is treated as ordinary chat, check that you used a leading slash, that you joined with the Admin Password field filled, and that the server was restarted after the password was changed.
Command availability can depend on the current game build and server configuration. A successful password check does not mean every command works in every situation; use the commands presented by the server’s own help output as the current list.

Using administrator commands safely
Enter commands in chat
Open chat with Enter, type a slash command, and submit it. The slash is part of the command syntax. Start with /help before attempting a moderation or server-management action.
Ban and kick syntax is not fully established
The official wiki lists /ban (steam id) and /kick (steam id), but marks those entries as requiring more information. That means the exact argument format is not verified by the available official description. Do not assume that a display name, a Steam nickname, or an arbitrary numeric identifier will work. Obtain the precise syntax from the help output for your running build or from documentation that explicitly targets The Forest, then test with the least disruptive action possible.

Keep the password private
- Use a password that is not reused for your Steam account, hosting panel, operating-system account, or other services.
- Share it only with people who should administer the server.
- Do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, bug reports, or support tickets.
- If it is exposed, change the configured value, restart the server, and give the replacement only to trusted administrators.
- Remember that launch arguments and panel logs can contain the password; restrict access to those locations.

Troubleshoot an account that is not receiving admin access
The password is rejected or commands do nothing
- Reconnect with the password: leave the server completely and enter the value in the Admin Password field before joining again.
- Check which value is authoritative: inspect launch arguments for
-serverpassword_admin. It overrides the file’sserverPasswordAdminentry. - Check the host panel: on a managed server, update the Admin Password field rather than relying on a manually edited configuration file.
- Restart after changes: stop and start the server so the new setting is loaded.
- Check the spelling: the configuration key and launch option have different capitalization and punctuation.
- Run the documented test: after reconnecting, type
/helpwith the slash. If it produces no command response, the connection was not authenticated or the command is unavailable in that build.
The configuration file cannot be found
Run the dedicated server once and look again in the documented directory under AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerds. The directory is associated with the Windows user that launched the process, so checking a different Windows account can lead to the wrong location. If a host manages the installation, use its file manager or startup settings instead of assuming the self-hosted path applies.
A file edit keeps reverting
A startup script or hosting panel may regenerate configuration values. Search the actual launch command for -serverpassword_admin and compare it with the value in the file. Because command-line values take precedence, changing only the file will not win against a different launch-line password.
The server was joined before the password was set
Administrator status is not retroactive. Set the password, restart if needed, disconnect, and join again with the Admin Password field populated. There is no documented in-session promotion procedure for a player who joined without authentication.

Sons of the Forest is a different game with different administration documentation. A Steam64-ID ownerswhitelist.txt procedure described for that game is not an established administrator method for The Forest. Likewise, commands such as cheatstick and cs:teleport commonly shown in Sons of the Forest guides should not be treated as reliable The Forest server commands.

The setting serverSteamAccount is also unrelated to administrator privileges. It is a Steam game-server login token for application 242760, not an administrator list or a substitute for serverPasswordAdmin.
Developer console and cheats: what is known
Some community discussion claims that the F1 developer console requires serverPasswordAdmin, developermodeon, and an appropriate allowCheats setting. That combination is not confirmed by the authoritative material available for this guide, so it should not be presented as a guaranteed administrator procedure.

Do not enable cheat-related settings on a public server without understanding their effect on other players and on the server’s rules.
Security and operational checklist
- Set a non-blank, unique
serverPasswordAdminvalue or the equivalent launch/panel setting. - Record where the effective value is defined: configuration file, launch argument, or hosting panel.
- Restart the server after changing the effective value.
- Join through the dialog that exposes Admin Password.
- Use
/helpas the first command check. - Keep the password out of public chat and shared logs.
- Change the password immediately if an unauthorized person learns it.
- Verify syntax against the help output and the documentation for the current game build before using disruptive commands.
Version and documentation caveat
The configuration guidance and file-location instructions have circulated for several years, while game patches and hosting panels can change labels or startup behavior. The core workflow remains the documented password method: configure serverPasswordAdmin, enter the password before joining, and use slash-prefixed commands in chat. For exact command arguments, especially moderation commands marked as requiring more information, verify the output from your running server and the current official wiki rather than copying instructions written for another game or an older build.
