What “admin” means in Arma 3
Arma 3 has several different kinds of control that are often called “admin.” An in-game administrator is a player authenticated through the mission server. That administrator can use server commands such as mission management, player removal, restarting and, where supported, shutting down the server. This is separate from an operating-system account, a hosting-panel account and BattlEye RCon.
When BattlEye RCon is not configured, the server can have only one active in-game administrator at a time. That status can come from an administrator vote or from a successful password login. The password method is the predictable choice for a server owner or trusted operator because it does not depend on other players voting.

Method 1: log in with passwordAdmin
This is the general-purpose method. Anyone who knows the configured password can attempt to authenticate, so it works for rotating staff and temporary operators without editing a player list.
1. Open the server configuration
Stop the server before editing its configuration if your host recommends doing so. Locate the active server.cfg—not a backup, template or unused profile file. On a rented server this is usually exposed through a file manager, FTP/SFTP or a configuration editor; on a self-hosted installation it is the file supplied to the dedicated-server process.
The exact path is installation-dependent. Confirm which configuration file the startup command or hosting panel actually loads. Editing a different copy produces no change even when the syntax is correct.

2. Set passwordAdmin
Add or change the administrator-password entry in server.cfg:
passwordAdmin = "use-a-long-unique-password";Use the normal Arma configuration syntax: a property name, an equals sign, a quoted value and a terminating semicolon. Do not leave two active passwordAdmin lines in the same file; remove or comment out the obsolete one so there is no ambiguity about which value the server reads.
Choose a password that is not used for Steam, email, the hosting panel or any other service. Treat it as a shared secret: every operator who receives it can attempt to become the one active in-game administrator. The password is entered through the game’s chat command, so assume it may be visible to people who can see that chat and replace it if it is disclosed.
A third-party guide suggests quoting passwords that contain spaces, but that behavior is not confirmed in the official material available for this guide. A conservative choice is a long password without spaces and with characters that are accepted by your host’s configuration editor.

3. Save, validate and restart
- Save the file as the live
server.cfg, preserving its extension and plain-text format. - Check that the line ends with a semicolon and that quotation marks are paired.
- Restart the Arma 3 server. Configuration changes normally take effect on startup; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably change the current session.
- Wait until the server has finished starting and is visible in the server browser or reachable by its normal connection method.
If your host offers a “restart” and a separate “stop/start,” either should reload the file, but allow the process to shut down fully before starting it again. A panel may also generate server.cfg from its own settings; in that case, make the change in the panel or it may overwrite your manual edit at the next restart.
4. Join and authenticate
- Join the server with the player account you intend to administer.
- Open the in-game chat input.
- Enter the command exactly as shown, replacing the example value:
#login use-a-long-unique-passwordThe official command behavior requires the password after #login to match the server’s passwordAdmin value. Do not type the quotation marks from the configuration line; they delimit the value in server.cfg. A successful login changes your session to administrator status. If the server rejects the command, remain connected while you check the troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly guessing passwords.

Method 2: grant access through admins[]
The server configuration also supports an admins[] list. It is intended to let listed players log in as administrators without typing the shared administrator password each session. The official wiki describes this feature as dating back to Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead.
The important limitation is identifier syntax. The official snippet refers to player UIDs, while several hosting guides describe quoted SteamID64 values. Those descriptions are not consistent enough to present one format as universally correct. Before deploying this method, consult the current server-config reference and the documentation for your host’s Arma 3 version.

Conceptually, the setting is an array of identifiers, for example:
admins[] = { "identifier-for-trusted-player" };Use the exact key, brackets, quotation and delimiter style shown by the current documentation. Do not paste a Steam display name, profile URL or an unverified identifier and assume it will work. If the value is rejected, remove it temporarily and return to the tested passwordAdmin method while you verify the identifier format.
When an identifier list is useful
- Each trusted operator can authenticate without sharing one password.
- Removing one operator means deleting one identifier instead of changing a secret for everybody.
- A server owner can keep a break-glass
passwordAdminvalue while normal staff use the list.
What it does not solve
- It does not provide remote administration when you are away from the game.
- It does not remove the need to restart after changing the configuration.
- It does not make an incorrectly formatted identifier valid.
- It does not establish whether administrator status survives a reconnect; the available summaries are inconsistent on that point, so test your current server rather than assuming persistence.

The BattlEye option in server.cfg enables the BattlEye anti-cheat client. BattlEye RCon is a separate remote-administration channel with its own configuration. Enabling anti-cheat does not, by itself, create an RCon account or make #login work remotely. A setup overview is available in this BattlEye and administration guide; use the Bohemia documentation for the game’s own configuration semantics.
Commands to use after you are logged in
Arma 3 server commands are entered through the same chat command mechanism. The official command reference is Multiplayer Server Commands. A host command table lists the following commands, but command availability can depend on the server state, mission and game version:

The last three commands are commonly named by hosting guides, while the official page is the full reference. Do not infer arguments from a different game or from a hosting panel’s button labels. If a command is rejected, check its spelling, required argument and whether your session still has administrator status.

The server says the password is wrong
- Reopen the active
server.cfgand compare the value character by character, including capitalization and punctuation. - Make sure you edited the file actually loaded by the startup command or host panel.
- Confirm that the server was restarted after the edit.
- Type
#login, one space and the password; do not include the configuration quotes or thepasswordAdmin =text. - Check whether a panel regenerated the file from an older saved setting.
The command appears to do nothing
- Send it through the in-game chat input, not a mission text field or an RCon console.
- Confirm the leading character is the ASCII number sign
#. - Check that you are connected to the intended server and not a similarly named public server.
- Try again after the server has completed its startup sequence.
admins[] does not recognize a player
- Verify the identifier using the current Bohemia configuration documentation rather than copying a profile name.
- Compare whether your host expects a UID or a quoted SteamID64 value; the available descriptions conflict.
- Check braces, quotation marks, commas and the terminating semicolon.
- Restart after saving. An identifier change is a configuration change, not a live chat command.
- Use a known-good
passwordAdminlogin to separate an identifier problem from a general administrator problem.
You cannot administer remotely
In-game #login only authenticates a connected player. Remote control requires BattlEye RCon configured separately, with its own credentials and network access. If you only enabled BattlEye anti-cheat in server.cfg, that does not mean RCon is available.
Security and handover practices
Protect the shared password
Give passwordAdmin only to people who need it, and change it when an operator leaves or the value appears in a screenshot, log, stream or public chat. Do not reuse it for the host panel or operating-system account. Because the password is supplied through chat, avoid entering it while streaming or recording an unrestricted chat window.
Prefer individual authorization for a larger team
An identifier list can reduce password sharing, provided you have confirmed the identifier syntax for your server. Keep a private record of who each entry belongs to and remove entries promptly when access should end. Retain a securely stored break-glass password so the owner can recover access if the list is malformed.
Coordinate disruptive commands
#restart, #shutdown, mission changes and player removals affect everyone connected. Announce the action, state why it is needed and allow players to save progress where the mission permits. Administrator authentication grants capability; it does not remove the need for server rules or an agreed moderation process.
Which method should you choose?
Use passwordAdmin when
- You are setting up the server for the first time.
- One owner or a small, trusted group needs in-game control.
- You want the simplest recovery path while diagnosing an identifier or panel problem.
Use admins[] when
- Several known operators need separate, revocable access.
- You have verified the identifier format accepted by your current server and host.
- You are prepared to test after every configuration change.
Add BattlEye RCon when
- Moderators must act without joining as players.
- You need a remote console or a moderation tool that uses RCon.
- You can secure its separate credentials, port and access rules.
For most first-time owners, configure passwordAdmin, restart, confirm #login in game and only then add an identifier list or RCon. This staged approach makes it clear whether a failure comes from the password, the configuration file, the identifier syntax or the remote-administration layer.
